SUMMARY:Webinar - 6/25/21 - The Top Ten: Questions and Controversy with Community Cat Programs - MCC and Maddie’s Fund
DESCRIPTION:Are you considering launching\, or have recently launched\, a RTF/SNR/TNR program and are now dealing with an onslaught of questions and/or pushback from your community about why you’re putting cats/kittens back where they came from? Are you being accused of abandonment? Wreaking havoc on the environment\, birds\, gardens\, peace AND quiet? Although it may not feel like it at times\, you and your community share the same goal. Whether you identify as an animal welfare professional\, a bird lover\, someone who just wants these cats out of your yard\, or all of the above\, we’re all here for the most effective\, sustainable way to reduce the number of cats living outside. Our challenge lies in communicating the benefits of a proven strategy that can often seem counterintuitive to those new to feline management. \nJoin this all-star panel:\nMaddie’s® Director of Feline Lifesaving\, Monica Frenden\nHSUS Senior Analyst\, Cat Protection & Policy\, Danielle Bays\nExecutive Director of Stray Cat Alliance\, Christi Metropole \nThey will give answers to the top ten questions you receive about TNR\, SNR\, returning cats\, and let us know how to message community cat program alignment with our universally-held goal of managing feline populations. \nWant to be sure your question is addressed? Email #allthecats@millioncatchallenge.org and we’ll queue it up for showtime. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://maddiesfund-org.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_NEcrYUdORHursmeF76ki_w

SUMMARY:CASCAR Zoom Call for California Shelters - 6/29/21 - Tom Kremer on RTO-Focused Data Analysis - CASCAR - UC Davis KSMP
DESCRIPTION:Some of you probably already saw Tom Kremer’s article in Frontiers journal\, “A New Web-Based Tool for RTO-Focused Animal Shelter Data Analysis.” This Tuesday\, June 29\, Tom will show us how the team at Dallas Animal Services was able to use this tool to document where dogs were coming from in the community and how far from home they were found\, providing robust support for the idea that most stray dogs are best served by efforts to reunite them with their families in the neighborhood of origin\, ideally by helping finders to bypass a trip to the shelter for person and pet. Tom will give us some of the key insights from the study and answer questions about how this online tool can be adapted for use by any shelter. \nThis might be a good one to invite your field officers to join\, and also maybe the data geeks on your team. Hope you can join us\, this should be fun! \nCASCAR room link: https://sheltermedicine.zoom.us/meeting/register/tJQtdO-srDItyMz7xy-ZsncbcFa6s8kKZg

SUMMARY:Webinar - 7/5/21 - Canine Welfare: How Do We Measure It and What Can We Learn Using These Measures in the Animal Shelter? - PPG (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:Considerable efforts have been made to improve the outcomes for dogs arriving to animal shelters\, resulting in substantial increases in the number of dogs adopted and returned to their owners as well as reductions in euthanasia. Over this time\, the role of the animal shelter has changed as well\, from one of temporary holding to longer lengths of stay as animals with more complex behavioral and medical needs are placed. Thus\, we must also evolve the care that we provide to these dogs to adequately meet their welfare needs. \nThis session will discuss how we can best assess welfare and promising measures found across the scientific literature that can help us better understand dogs’ experiences in the shelter. With these measures in mind\, the presenter will describe recent research investigating the effects of housing and social interaction on shelter dog welfare. By identifying meaningful welfare measures\, interventions intended to improve the lives of shelter-living dogs can be tested and\, when impactful\, implemented in animal shelters. \n\nIdentify stressors in the shelter environment that may compromise canine welfare.\nDescribe the difficulties inherent in measuring welfare.\nExplain the different physiological\, cognitive\, behavioral\, and health measures that can be used to measure canine welfare in the shelter.\nSummarize how housing and interactions with other dogs may affect shelter dog welfare.\nDevelop a plan about how you could measure the welfare of dogs in your animal shelter.\n\nCEUs: PPAB 1\, CCPDT (pending)\, IAABC (pending)\, KPA (pending) \nAbout Your Presenter \n\nLisa Gunter Ph.D MA CBCC-KA is the Maddie’s Fund Research Fellow at Arizona State University in the Department of Psychology and conducts her research in the Canine Science Collaboratory. She currently leads the Maddie’s Fund Nationwide Fostering Study. The goal of Dr. Gunter’s research is to better the lives of dogs and\, to this aim\, she has investigated the breed labeling of shelter dogs\, their breed heritage\, post-adoption interventions focused on owner retention\, various types of fostering\, enrichment\, and behavioral indicators of welfare for kenneled dogs. She has published her research in scientific journals\, presented her findings at numerous conferences\, and received national and international media attention for her work. \nPrior to her graduate school\, she worked as a behavior consultant and trainer in San Francisco where she taught group classes and consulted with owners experiencing issues of fear\, anxiety\, and aggression with their dogs. Her interest in canine behavior began in 2002 as an animal shelter volunteer\, training dogs in basic skills and assisting in shelter dog playgroups. That interest grew into a career where she managed the behavior programs of several shelters throughout the West. During graduate school\, Dr. Gunter co-founded Wagfield Academy\, an online dog training and behavior resource for owners\, and the Institute for Shelter Dogs with Dr. Erica Feuerbacher\, where they combine the latest in shelter research with the current best practices in workshops and consultations for staff and volunteers. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://petprofessionalguild.com/event-4361915

SUMMARY:Online Course - 7/7/21 - ACO Seminar Series - Best Friends
DESCRIPTION:Community Engagement: The Lifesaving Philosophy\n9-10:30am (PST): Register for this course here.\nThe term “community engagement” gets thrown around a lot\, as if it is  something that an officer can do if they have a few extra minutes.  To  unlock the full potential of community engagement\, however\, we must  start thinking of it as less of a project and more of a state of mind.  This lifesaving philosophy will not only help save the lives of animals  but could potentially save an officer’s life as well.  In this course  you will learn how embracing community engagement as a mindset can\, and  will\, increase lifesaving efforts and officer safety. \nAdvanced Return to Owner in the Field: Beyond the Scanner\n11am-12:30pm (PST): Register for this course here.\nAnimal control officers are playing a much larger role today in the  reduction of shelter intake by choosing to identify and return stray dogs to their families without bringing them into the shelter\, but all  too often officers stop looking for an owner was they find that the animal has no ID tags or microchip. This workshop highlights successful  efforts from agencies across the country that have shown to  significantly increase the field RTO rate for those animals without  obvious identification. \nCommunity Cats: Mitigating Feline Nuisance\n11:00am-12:30pm (PST): Register for this course here.\nThis session will cover how to respond to residents who don’t want  community cats\, also known as feral\, stray or free-roaming cats\, on  their property. We’ll discuss strategic placement of deterrents\,  de-escalation techniques and information sharing regarding the long-term  effectiveness of managing populations of community cats after  sterilization. \nCE Units will be provided by Best Friends after viewing each session. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://www.calanimals.org/education-and-training
