SUMMARY:CASCAR Zoom Call for California Shelters - 10/22/20 - Villain\, Victim\, or Hero Presentation by Billions Institute Leader Becky Margiotta - CASCAR - UC Davis KSMP
DESCRIPTION:On a scale from one to ten\, how open are you to learning something new?  \nCuriosity and humility are a huge part of leading change. And while most of us love to learn and believe we’re completely open to discovery\, the truth is we all take on different personas that take us out of learning without us even being aware that we’ve “turned off” learning mode. \nJoin us for a different kind of CASCAR (that’s right\, this is new territory for us!)\, where we’ll go on a journey with one of Dr. Hurley’s mentors\, the incredible Becky Margiotta (100\,000 Homes Campaign\, Skid Row School for Unleashing Large-Scale Change\, Billion Institute)\, to find out which of the three main personas\, hero\, victim\, villain\, like to ride with us to work from time to time. (Don’t be shy\, we all have uninvited carpoolers.) \nMost importantly\, we’ll learn how to recognize when they are showing up and what to do with them when they do. \nBring your staff\, bring your board\, bring your cat. We’re on a mission to move barriers out of the way of progress and\, sometimes\, that starts with a little self-discovery. \nTo Join the Zoom Meeting \nhttps://sheltermedicine.zoom.us/j/900364297?pwd=WndTUnlidXhqaStMSjNZdlJDVDg0QT09 <https://sheltermedicine.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=a75971c5c2718a53106f9e6ea&id=b124ae0ef7&e=268f362992> \nMeeting ID: 900 364 297 \nPasscode: together \nOne tap mobile \n+16699006833\,\,900364297# US (San Jose) \nDial by your location \n+1 669 900 6833 US (San Jose) \n+1 346 248 7799 US (Houston) \n+1 253 215 8782 US (Tacoma) \n+1 646 876 9923 US (New York) \n+1 301 715 8592 US (Germantown) \n+1 312 626 6799 US (Chicago) \nMeeting ID: 900 364 297 \nFind your local number: https://sheltermedicine.zoom.us/u/acRTFiO9ex <https://sheltermedicine.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=a75971c5c2718a53106f9e6ea&id=4c60d2305a&e=268f362992>

SUMMARY:Webinar - 10/28/20 - Too Hot to Handle – Understanding and Working With the “Reactive” Dog - Dr. Christopher Pachel - Dog-iBox (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:Arousal is necessary for normal day to day activity as well as for survival. We also know that arousal levels are supposed to change in response to environmental and social pressures\, and that arousal can affect information processing and the modulation of fight/flight responses. Unfortunately\, not all arousal regulation systems are created or developed equally! This presentation will focus on those dogs that are easily over-stimulated by sensory information\, tend to over-react to their surroundings\, and have a difficult time recovering or returning to a normal resting level of arousal. Information specific to the underlying neurological basis for this pattern\, strategies for impacting the development of impulse control and arousal regulation throughout development\, as well as behavior modification and medication intervention strategies will be addressed and discussed. \n  \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://www.dog-ibox.com/market/catalog/live-webinars/live-webinars-english-c-34/too-hot-to-handle-understanding-and-working-with-the-reactive-dog.html

SUMMARY:Webinar - 10/29/20 - Boxing Down: The Wrong Choice for Animals... and People - Fear Free
DESCRIPTION:Boxing Down: The Wrong Choice for Animals… and People\n\n\n\n\nMost of us who have been practicing for longer than a decade have used inhalant chambers to “box down” feline patients. It seemed to work\, and the patient was able to be treated. Why throw away a potentially useful sedation protocol? Because the use of inhalant chambers or masks (also called “boxing” or “masking”) for sedation or induction to anesthesia is not considered standard of care. \nWe hope you can join Clinical Behavioral Medicine Resident Alison Gerken\, DVM\, and Washington State University Adjunct Professor Tamara Grubb\, DVM\, PhD\, DACVAA\, as they discuss the science of why these techniques are no longer recommended and what you can do instead. \n\n\n\n\nTime \n\nOct 29\, 2020 08:00 PM in Eastern Time (US and Canada) \n\n\nWEBSITE LINK:  https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_XefD28mPRvCwh6VdbMDyag

SUMMARY:Webinar - 11/3/20 - Revisiting Respondent Techniques - Change the Behavior by Changing the Emotions - PPG (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:CEUs: PPAB 1.5\, CCPDT (pending)\, IAABC (pending)\, KPA (pending)\n\nWhen working towards solving behavior problems our focus tends to be on the behavior. This happens for a couple of reasons: firstly\, behaviors are much more noticeable than the emotions that drive them; secondly\, from the human perspective the behavior is the problem\, not the emotion. From the dog’s perspective\, however\, the emotion is the problem\, not the behavior! It is true that respondent conditioning and operant conditioning occur almost simultaneously\, which results in an interplay between emotions and what the dog learns from punishers and reinforcers. Because of this interplay\, we prioritize the “get the behavior” approach. But how much faster could a behavior problem be solved if we prioritized the “change the emotion” approach? Let’s remember that emotional states are antecedent stimuli\, that motivation is an emotional process\, and that emotional responses are more immediate than thought-out ones. This webinar will revisit respondent techniques such as classical extinction\, systematic desensitization and counter-conditioning\, as well as explain how to apply them effectively taking different variables into account. \nLearning Objectives \n\nUnderstand the impact of emotions on behavior.\nBecome aware of emotional states as antecedent stimuli.\nLearn how motivation contributes towards reinforced behaviors not being displayed and punished behaviors being displayed.\nLearn why emotional responses are more immediate than though-out ones.\nUnderstand classical extinction and how to apply it\, reinstatement of an extinguished response\, renewal and spontaneous recovery.\nLearn the various types of counter conditioning and how to apply them effectively.\nDevelop skills to ensure a smooth desensitization process.\nAvoid the pitfalls of flooding.\n\n\n\nAbout Your Presenter \n       \nAlexandra Santos is a professional canine behavior consultant and trainer\, with formal education through The Animal Care College in the U.K. where she graduated with honors for the Diploma of Advanced Canine Psychology\, and through The Companion Animal Sciences Institute where she graduated with distinction for the Diploma of Advanced Dog Training. \nShe is the author of the books “Puppy Problems”\, “Puppy Training: How to house train your puppy effectively”\, “How to leash train your dog and enjoy walking him”\, “O meu cão e eu”\, “Cão educado\, dono feliz” (published in Portugal)\, and has also authored and co-authored several articles for the Journal of Applied Companion Animal Behavior and the International Institute for Applied Companion Animal Behavior. \nAlexandra lives and works in Lisbon\, Portugal\, as a guest professor at Universidade Lusófona de Humanidades e Tecnologias and provides individual coaching for dogs and their people. SUMMARY:Online Conference - 11/7/20 and 11/8/20 - Medicine Weekend - NoodleU (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:Medicine Weekend\nNovember 7-8\, 2020 | 17 Hours of RACE APPROVED CE\n\nWhen it comes to the meatball of the conference\, we know that you and your veterinary staff need LIVE Continuing Education credits\, and we’ve certainly done our best to provide those to you with the most relevant topics available for veterinary medicine today. Don’t worry: this is different from other conferences you’ve attended (and not just because you can watch from your bed) – we promise that learning about new medicine topics can be fun. Our speakers were chosen because they are informative and entertaining. \nOur medicine speakers are familiar with engaging an audience\, and with years of real life experience in the field\, they can incorporate personal experience and authentic humor into sessions. It’ll be anything but boring. \nWe know that keeping veterinary professionals engaged with hours of content after a busy week is no small task – but\, to brag on ourselves a little bit – that’s exactly what we did with NoodleU. We cannoli shake our heads at how wonderful it all turned out to be. \n\n\n\n\nKeynote Speaker: Shawn Achor\nHarvard Researcher | Bestselling Author of The Happiness Advantage \nLinking Positive Brains to Performance \nMost business is done under the guideline that: if you work harder\, you will be more successful\, and then you will be happy. This formula is scientifically backward. What over a decade of research shows is that training your brain to be positive first actually leads to greater success at work. In fact\, only 25% of job success is predicted by intelligence\, the rest is determined by your optimism\, social support network and the ability to manage energy and stress in a positive way. Based on Shawn’s book\,The Happiness Advantage (2010) and research studying top performers at Harvard\, the world’s largest banks and Fortune 500 companies\, Shawn explains what positive psychology is\, how much we can change\, and practical applications and strategies for reaping the Happiness Advantage in the midst of change and challenge. \n\nWEBSITE LINK: https://www.noodleu.com/medicine-program
