SUMMARY:Webinar - 12/10/20 - Recruiting the Next Generation to Your Agency - NACA/Justice Clearinghouse
DESCRIPTION:How many of you have heard the words “well\, we’ve always done it that way” as an excuse to not grow and change? As leaders\, it is our responsibility to grow teams with unique points of view to gain fresh ideas and perspectives and ensure growth\, change\, and continued success in our organizations.  Many leaders\, in our industry as well as others\, tend to be a bit controlling\, and since many of us have done just about every job in animal welfare\, we may think we know how to do it all.  We aren’t wrong about knowing how to do it\, but do we know how to do it best? This session is designed to discuss how leaders within animal welfare can approach recruitment\, retention\, and promotion to foster a diverse team of subject matter experts to help take their organization to the next level. \n  \nOther Webinars in this Series Include:\n\nDec 10: Recruiting the Next Generation to Your Agency\nApril 8: Staycations and Daycations – Building Short Term Foster Programs\nJuly 8: Building and Maintaining a Productive\, High Volume Fostering Program\nJuly 22: The Care\, Nurturing and Enrichment of Tame & Feral Volunteers\n\n  \n\n \n  \nThe National Animal Care & Control Association (NACA) was formed in 1978 for the express purpose of assisting its members to perform their duties in a professional manner. We believe only carefully selected and properly trained animal control personnel can correct community problems resulting from irresponsible animal ownership. NACA’s purpose is to preserve the Human/Animal Bond by insisting on responsible animal ownership. \n  \n\n  \n\n\n\n\nPresenters:\n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr. Josh Fisher has an educational background in population management/medicine\, public health\, veterinary sciences\, informatics\, and healthcare administration.  He has been working in the veterinary medical/animal welfare field for over 15 years holding management roles in private practices\, cooperate practices\, the NCSU College of Veterinary Medicine\, county government\, and now as the Animal Services Director for the City of Charlotte/Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department. \nA strong advocate for professional development and growth in the animal welfare industry\, Josh seeks to involve staff in continued education and training opportunities as well as in cutting edge industry research.  His professional interests focus on disease reduction/prevention\, advanced marketing/placement and intake reduction tactics\, strategic planning\, and staff career development in the area of animal welfare.  His projects include increasing interest of veterinary/veterinary technician students in the animal welfare industry as well as working with community veterinarians to break down barriers\, develop relationships\, and increase involvement in community-focused animal welfare (animal control and sheltering) practices. \nIt is a passion of Josh’s to bring a level of awareness to the animal welfare industry in such a way that young adults and college students make the decision to pursue animal welfare as a profession rather than falling into it by chance. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWEBSITE LINK:  https://www.justiceclearinghouse.com/webinar/recruiting-the-next-generation-to-your-agency/

SUMMARY:Webinar - 1/14/21 - Placing Behaviorally Challenged Dogs - The AAWA and NEFHS
DESCRIPTION:Should you or shouldn’t you? When it comes to placing behaviorally challenged dogs\, that is the question. \nThe unintended consequence of reduced shelter populations has been an increase in placements of challenging dogs. We see success stories on social media and television shows\, but is there more to the story? What is their quality of life – and that of their owners? Learn more about what effect these dogs are having on the families that love them and the communities they live in. \nThis panel will bring together research from Seana Dowling-Guyer about what happens to dogs after adoption\, with post-adoption case studies from professional dog trainer Melissa McCue-McGrath\, and shelter trends and perspectives from Mike Keiley from MSPCA. \nThis 90-minute panel and Q&A is part of a 3-part series from The New England Federation of Humane Societies (NEFHS) hosted by The Association for Animal Welfare Advancement. \nThis session has been pre-approved for 1.5 Certified Animal Welfare Administrator continuing education credits. \n\n  \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://learning.theaawa.org/products/11421-placing-behaviorally-challenged-dogs

SUMMARY:Weekly Call - Monday Mornings - Connect With Other Animal Shelter Professionals - Maddie's Fund
DESCRIPTION:Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic\, animal shelter workers\, volunteers and animal welfare leaders from across the country have been meeting every Monday morning to discuss protocols\, ideas\, obstacles they’re facing and more.     \nLed by Kristen Hassen-Auerbach\, Director of Pima Animal Care in Tucson\, AZ\, these calls have provided an opportunity for people to connect that otherwise may not have even met.    \n“The purpose of these calls is simple – maintain connection among shelter professionals\, provide support and comradery\, and share science-based news and information along with emerging best practices in animal welfare\,” Hassen-Auerbach says. “These calls are always lively and interesting and we’re not afraid to debate and share different perspectives from the attendees. You can take center stage and share your thoughts and ideas in front of several hundred of your colleagues or quietly drink your morning coffee and listen in.”  \nFor many\, these calls have been an invaluable resource. “When the subject of DEI (Diversity\, Equity and Inclusion) came to the front of all of our minds\, the calls adapted and we had a space to again learn from one another\,” said Emily Klehm from South Suburban Humane Society in Chicago Heights\, IL. “The calls have been my go-to source for grant information\, statistics and trends. I’ve also been able to identify and connect to colleagues working on the same issues in similar communities.”  \nDr. Ellen Jefferson\, Executive Director at Austin Pets Alive! adds\, “We hear from people in the industry who have important information related to COVID\, new programming and research.  This is information you can’t possibly get in your day to day work at your local shelter.”  \nIf you’re a shelter professional\, dedicated volunteer or run a rescue organization\, we want you to join us! Bookmark the link below and we will see you on Monday! \nNote: The calls are recorded so if you can’t make it\, you can listen in later. If you haven’t already\, join the Facebook group to access the link to recorded calls and to connect with others on there. \nMONDAYS:  8:00 AM to 9:00 AM PT \nJoin Zoom Meeting\nRegister for free here: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZUqc-6spj0jHtES3GWxrpaG6L3HcbMh_dCu\nYou need only register once to attend each recurring meeting throughout the year.\n\nMEETING LINK:  https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZUqc-6spj0jHtES3GWxrpaG6L3HcbMh_dCu

SUMMARY:Webinar - 1/12/21 - Confronting Conflict with Teams - Banfield
DESCRIPTION:Conflict is something that\, as much as we try\, we cannot avoid because conflict is comes up anytime your view differs from another’s — and humans are opinionated beings. While most of us have a strong reactions to conflict\, including (but not limited to) fear; avoidance; and/or dread\, conflict can also have positive impacts. It can allow for exploration of new and different ways of doing things resulting in better outcomes. When we think of the negatives of conflict it’s because of the emotions that conflict evokes — often making situations feel explosive. By learning how to step up to conflict and confronting it head on by using the right approach\, you can turn conflict into a positive for both you and your team. \nDate: January 12\nTime:  9:00 – 10:30am PST\nCourse Timing: 1.5 hour virtual session with 15 minute pre-work (RACE approved) \nThis session will help you: \n\nDefine the five modes of handling conflict; competing\, collaborating\, avoiding\, accommodating\nHelp you understand how to identify the best mode for various situations to produce a positive experience\nIdentify where you may or may not be flexing your approach to conflict in a current team situation to determine what approach would be best to get you a positive outcome\n\nWhen we step up to conflict\, instead of away from it\, and take the right approach we can change our perception and\, ultimately\, end in a better place than we are today. \nJoin us for the conversation! \n\nWEBSITE LINK:  https://banfield-continuing-education-series.webflow.io/

SUMMARY:Webinar - 1/18/21 - The New Normal: Spay/Neuter by Five Months of Age - National Kitten Coalition
DESCRIPTION:The National Kitten Coalition is excited to host Dr. Philip Bushby and Esther Mechler from the Feline Fix by Five program of Marian’s Dream to present on sterilizing kittens by five months of age. \nThere is confusion in the general public and private veterinary community about the optimum time to spay/neuter felines. For many\, the recommended time has been six months of age. By that time a cat may be pregnant and shelters are overflowing. For that reason\, Marian’s Dream embarked on a campaign to push the recommended age for felines back by four weeks. Dr. Bushby will present his findings on why the change is recommended\, specific concerns that people have raised\, and the research that supports the change. \nVeterinarians often wait until cats are 6 months old before spay/neuter. The AVMA\, AAHA\, AAFP and the ASV disagree with waiting that long. The new normal is prior to 5 months of age. Several factors have led to this change: \n1. Mammary neoplasia is the 3rd most common cancer in cats and 85 to 90% of feline mammary tumors are malignant. Spay before 5 months of age significantly reduces mammary neoplasia.\n2. Spay/Neuter prior to 5 months of age reduces unplanned and unwanted litters of kittens.\n3. Castration prior to 5 months of age significantly reduces sexual behaviors which often cause relinquishment of cats to animal shelters. \nIt is safe to spay/neuter cats that young. Surgeries are easier\, faster and safer. There are no adverse physiologic or orthopedic effects from spay/neuter prior to 5 months of age. Cats in shelters should be sterilized prior to adoption. Owned cats should be sterilized after the kitten vaccination series\, but before 5 months of age. \n*The recording for this webinar will be available on NKC’s Archived Webinar page (https://kittencoalition.org/resources/archived-webinars/) within a few weeks after the webinar ends. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://register.gotowebinar.com/register/4058934446112442126
