SUMMARY:Online Course - Starts 3/1/21 - RAT™: Relationship Assessment Tool - Certification Course with Suzanne Clothier (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:RAT™ is a rapid assessment tool that provides clear information about each relationship. Whoever they may be\, in every relationship the handler brings his or her habits\, personalities\, needs and style to interact with the dog\, who also brings his own personality\, patterns of response\, needs and style. We need to work with the whole package. \nRAT™ clearly identifies the strengths and weaknesses of any dog/handler team. Training Triage helps you prioritize and develop a sensible\, targeted training plan for improving and strengthening the relationship. Put your training time\, energy and resources into addressing the actual issues\, not following a one-size-fits-all training plan. RAT™ is a must-have tool that streamlines your training so that you can be as effective\, humane and customized as possible. \nGrounded in detailed observations\, RAT™ can be used for initial assessment as well as for monitoring progress over time or situations. RAT™ can be done in almost any setting to gather critical information about the dog/handler team. \nRAT™ is ideal for trainers\, instructors\, shelter workers\, rescue groups\, veterinarians\, vet techs\, breeders\, service dog trainers\, AAI/AAT and anyone interested in understanding and enhancing the dog/human relationship. \nSuzanne Clothier\, Instructor \nBegins March 1\, 2021 \nCEUs pending \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://relationshipcenteredtraining.thinkific.com/courses/rat-assessment

SUMMARY:Webinar - 3/2/21 - When the Evidence Wags Its Tail - NACA/Justice Clearinghouse
DESCRIPTION:There comes a time in every investigator’s career that cats and dogs are part of a case\, whether centrally\, as seen in situations of animal cruelty\, or peripherally\, as often seen in domestic violence calls. In many of these situations\, you may need to document the animals’ condition without the assistance of a veterinarian or experienced humane law enforcement officer. Do you know what you are looking for\, and what to put on the record? This webinar will take you through the basic logistics of documenting an animal’s condition- nose to tail- including physical and behavioral characteristics\, how to make it part of the record so it holds up in court\, and preserving your case when the evidence is alive. \nOr click here to view and register for other upcoming NACA  webinars on the JCH Platform. \n  \n\n \n  \nThe National Animal Care & Control Association (NACA) was formed in 1978 for the express purpose of assisting its members to perform their duties in a professional manner. We believe only carefully selected and properly trained animal control personnel can correct community problems resulting from irresponsible animal ownership. NACA’s purpose is to preserve the Human/Animal Bond by insisting on responsible animal ownership. \n  \n  \n\n\nPresenters: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\nNina Stively is the Director of Loudoun County Animal Services in northern Virginia\, an independent government agency that includes the County animal shelter and a team of sworn humane law enforcement officers. Nina is a Certified Animal Cruelty Investigator\, a Certified Animal Welfare Administrator\, and an Animal Control Officer in the Commonwealth of Virginia. She still has a seventeen-year-old cat named Mercury from her very first TNR project\, and shares her home with some very supportive humans\, five chickens\, two cats\, three dogs and an assortment of foster animals. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://www.justiceclearinghouse.com/webinar/when-the-evidence-wags-its-tail/

SUMMARY:Webinar - 3/3/21 - Successful Animal Management Program in Regional Australia: Lessons learned from a multi–agency approach - NACA/Justice Clearinghouse
DESCRIPTION:Building a successful animal management program from the ground up is challenging at the best of times but throw in the mix a low socio-economic area\, poor trust in AMOs\, limited resources\, and a long history of high enforcement. Understanding the needs of a community\, difficulties in an area as well as taking a multi-agency approach to a pilot animal management program has lead to amazing success for a regional Local Government in Australia. Gaining the trust of the community became the key to creating a successful working relationship. \nCome join Tina Martin and Ann-Marie Plasto to find out about how you could build a holistic approach to animal management programs in low socio-areas with great results. \n  \nWhat you’ll learn: \n\nSummary of current animal management pilot program in a regional Australian town.\nChallenges faced and how they were overcome within the program.\nWhy a multi-agency approach to an animal management program leads to successful outcomes for everyone involved\n\n  \n\n \nThe Australian Institute of Animal Management (AIAM) is the national peak body representing Local Government Animal Management Officers. The AIAM Committee consists of a wide range of professionals engaged in the various aspects of animal management. \nAIAM seeks to support those engaged in the business of animal management\, and the function itself\, by providing training and information\, opportunities for networking and collaboration\, and by encouraging the use of best practice policy and practices. AIAM promotes consistency of legislation\, consultation in the creation of legislation and workplace processes\, and healthy relationships with external stakeholders and the community. AIAM supports cross-sector collaboration and co-design of projects and initiatives. \n  \n\n\n  \nAbout the Presenters: \n\n\nAnn-Marie Plasto joined Cairns Regional Council in 2015 in the small outdated pound facility\, but this never stopped her dreaming of making changes from the moment she stepped into the kennels. Making lead officer within 18months she uses her tertiary studies and skills gained from other facilities in Queensland\, mixed in with some sheer determination to improve the facility for the sake of the animals and the community. Working in other larger shelters\, boarding facilities\, and wildlife parks around the region Ann-Marie has gained a deep understanding of the needs of the community. Although she is still young in her Council career every day is a learning curve working in Local Govt and there is no one better to take up the challenge in this regional Queensland town. \nTina Martin has had over 25 years’ experience in the animal welfare and animal management field. Starting off her career with RSPCA\, she worked in a range of positions from vet nursing to shelter manager all up and down the Queensland Coast in Australia. This diversity of positions and locations for 14 years gave Tina an immense understanding of animal management issues faced by a range of communities across Australia. Tina now brings her wealth of knowledge to Cairns Regional Council as their Animal Management Supervisor. \n  \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://www.justiceclearinghouse.com/webinar/successful-animal-management-program-in-regional-australia-lessons-learned-from-a-multi-agency-approach-in-a-challenging-comm/

SUMMARY:Online Course - 3/4/21 - CARAT™: Ethology of the Individual - Suzanne Clothier (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:Did you miss CARAT last time? Here’s your chance to join us and find out why people say\, “CARAT changes everything!” \nCARAT is a novel temperament assessment system that categorizes behavior traits in multiple components that are intuitive and practical. CARAT is truly a game changer that will alter how you assess\, understand and work with dogs. \nCARAT takes a detailed view of the individual dog as a unique combination of many factors working together to influence\, exacerbate\, mitigate and enhance each other. In the profile created by the nuances and specifics of this complex interaction of multiple traits\, an accurate picture is created of the individual\, regardless of breed or age. \nAt all times\, behavior is assessed according to how productive\, functional\, or adaptive it may be\, with a full understanding that what may be productive\, functional or adaptive in one context may not be in another context. For example\, there would be great differences in the CARAT profiles for a successful guide dog\, competitive agility dog and a suitable companion for an elderly person with mobility issues. \n  \nWhat Does CARAT Assess? \nCARAT looks at these main categories and specifics of temperament traits: \n\nCORE:  Arousal\, Resilience\, Energy\nSOCIAL: Sociability\, Social Tolerance\, Social Use of Space\nSENSORY: Visual\, Auditory\, Kinesthetic\, Olfactory\nPERSISTENCE: Visual\, Auditory\, Kinesthetic\, Olfactory\, Predatory/Chase\nINTERACTIVE:  Patience\, Biddability w/Familiar\, Biddability w/Stranger\nComplex traits:  Social Confidence\, Environmental Confidence\, Self Modulation\n\n  \nThis is an online course\, with all events taking place online through Thinkific & Zoom. The details: \n·      The complete content will be presented in 8 sessions\, each approx 1.5 hours in length. \n·      Upon completion of the course\, access to private CARAT discussion group. \n·      We will release two pre-recorded sessions each week for 4 weeks. \n·      You may watch the recorded sessions any time\, at your convenience. \n·      Q&A Zoom meeting each week. Attend live\, or submit questions ahead of time. \n·      In all cases\, the Q&A sessions will also be recorded. SUMMARY:CASCAR Zoom Call for California Shelters - 3/4/21 - Long Beach Animal Services & Stray Cat Alliance Partnership - CASCAR - UC Davis KSMP
DESCRIPTION:This week we’ll continue the conversation we started on February 18: an oral history of the partnership between Long Beach Animal Services and Stray Cat Alliance to implement one of the early SNR/RTF/community cat programs in California. Kelly Miott (erstwhile with Long Beach Animal Care Services)\, Staycee Dains (current director of LBACS)\, and Anna Wong and Christi Metropole (Stray Cat Alliance) have agreed to join us. This is an experiment but hopefully will be fun and interesting and will inspire more sharing of the many great stories in California animal welfare and sheltering. \nCASCAR room link: https://sheltermedicine.zoom.us/meeting/register/tJQtdO-srDItyMz7xy-ZsncbcFa6s8kKZg

SUMMARY:Online Conference - 3/8/21 to 3/9/21 - 2021 Great Lakes Animal Welfare Conference - Michigan Humane (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:The 2021 Great Lakes Animal Welfare Conference (GLAWC) is moving online March 8-9 to keep everyone safe. Just because you can’t gather with all of your animal welfare industry peers doesn’t mean the sharing of knowledge stops. GLAWC 2021 will feature two days full of virtual sessions hosted by the brightest minds in our industry. \nWe’re proud to announce Humane Rescue Alliance president and CEO Lisa LaFontaine as our keynote speaker! As the keynote speaker at GLAWC\, Lisa will be speaking about how COVID-19 has changed animal welfare organizations’ relationship with our communities. From her unique perspective as the President and CEO of the first regional\, community-based\, multi-state animal welfare organization in the nation\, Lisa will discuss how COVID-19 took us from daily operations to helping fill the gap in services left by the necessary restrictions established in the early days of the pandemic. \nAnimal welfare organizations have gone through a lot this year.  Lisa will kick off our conference by helping us reflect on lessons learned and how we should be forging ahead. \nWhat’s to Expect at GLAWC 2021 \nOur excellent keynote will kick off two days of dynamic\, educational programming full of “news you can use” – information you can put to use in your own organization right away! We’re bringing back our “Ask the Experts” sessions\, where you can ask national leaders in behavior\, like Pam Hill\, and shelter medicine\, like Dr. Jeanette O’Quin\, YOUR questions. \nSteve Kaufman\, CAWA\, from PetSmart Charities will talk about the past\, present\, and future of adoptions\, and we’ll have breakout sessions on setting cat adopters up for success and about barriers to adoption. Hilary Hager\, a Senior Director from HSUS\, will give an interactive two-part session on resilience/compassion fatigue\, which is critically important during these challenging times\, and she will also talk about making the most of your volunteer power. \nAs a special feature\, Michigan Humane’s behaviorist\, Katelin Thomas\, will provide a three-part session on dog behavior\, covering common behavior problems from causes to treatment and also addressing how to assess dogs with behavior issues for adoption. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWEBSITE LINK:  https://www.michiganhumane.org/event/virtual-great-lakes-animal-welfare-conference/

SUMMARY:Webinar - 3/11/21 - Your End of the Leash Part One: Handler Body Language - Suzanne Clothier (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:While much of dog training seems focused on the dog\, handlers can and do affect their dog’s behavior and learning. Masters of body language subtleties\, dogs are finely attuned to us\, aware of how we move\, act\, speak\, breathe. Many training problems are rooted in communication issues\, caused by a handler’s body language and unintended messages. \nThe dog’s understanding of the handler’s behavior is built in the details of how the handler typically moves\, laughs\, smiles\, speaks\, breathes\, etc. in familiar and comfortable settings. But under stress\, in unfamiliar or challenging situations\, things can change. \nShifts in the handler signals to the dog that the person he relies on is alarmed\, angry\, worried\, or even afraid. Depending on the dog\, this can have significant impact on behavior. \nThis webinar will help you become more aware of your own body language: \n\nBreathing\nMuscle tension\nFlexion & stance\nBlink rate\nCore & gaze orientation\n\nAs a bonus\, you’ll learn Suzanne’s 5 Point Check approach to handler awareness & self monitoring. This simple but effective technique will help you\, and – for professionals – is ideal for your students. \nWe’ll be doing some interactive exercises throughout the webinar so you get to experiment and experience how simple changes can provide profound changes – for the better! \nJoin us – your dog will thank you for your improved awareness of your role as your dog’s partner. \nALL WEBINARS ARE RECORDED. A link will be sent to you 48 hours after the completion of the webinar for you to access the recording and watch at your convenience. If you need CEUs for IAABC or PPAB\, instructions on how to get those CEUs will be made available during the webinar. CEUs for IAABC and PPAB are pending. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://register.gotowebinar.com/register/404610795744144141?source=Website
