SUMMARY:Webinar - 6/18/22 and 6/25/22 - Biology of Dog Aggression with Tim Lewis - Puppyworks (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:More than ever before canine professionals are approached by clients with dogs who exhibit aggressive behavior. Within the population both have increased\, the number of dogs exhibiting various degrees of aggression as well as people’s sensitivity to aggressive dog behavior. \nIn this two-part webinar series\, we will look at the biological and environmental causes of dog aggression from DNA through gut biomes to chronic stress. We will look at the biological mechanisms behind different management and treatment options so you better understand what might work and when. \nEnvironmental and learning effects are always superimposed upon genetic influences\, but aggressive behavior does not occur in a biological vacuum. We will define “normal aggression” versus symptoms for maladaptive aggression responses. \nWHEN \nSaturdays June 18 & 25\, 2022 at 9:00 AM West Coast\, 10:00 AM Mountain\, 11:00 AM Central & 12:00 Noon Eastern Time. Or view the recordings at any time\, available the day after each live session. \n\n\n\nPROGRAM DETAILS \nSession One: Saturday\, June 18\, 2022 – In this session we will set the stage\, clarify terminologies\, discuss the extent of the issues & explore the biological basis of canine aggression! \n\n\n Session Two: Saturday\, June 25\, 2022  - A dive into the intrinsic biological controls of aggression\, the biological basis of aggression management through mechanical controls to medical aggression reducers. \n\n\n\nWEBSITE LINK:  https://www.puppyworks.com/aggression

SUMMARY:Webinar - 6/22/22 - The Four Rights: How can your shelter achieve them for the animals in your community? - Getting 2 Zero
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special opportunity to explore the newly imagined Four Rights with Dr Cindy Karsten of the UC Davis Koret Shelter Medicine Program. \nThe foundation of the Million Cat Challenge rested on Five Key Initiatives\, refined and adapted to shelters of every size and type throughout North America\, which together represented a holistic approach that addressed the “before\, during and after” for any cat at risk of shelter entry. These initiatives were proven by over 3.5 million more cat lives saved by over 1500 Challenger Shelters. \nNow\, #ThanksToMaddie\, we’re thinking bigger. The Five Key Initiatives have expanded to include other species at risk in shelters and evolved into the Four Rights\, with community services\, humane care within the shelter\, and appropriate outcomes for the animals that do come in all working in concert to support one another. Join us in this interactive session\, imagining and creating a world in which every single shelter is able to provide every animal at risk with the Right Care in the Right Place at the Right Time to the Right Outcome. \nPresenter: Dr Cynthia Karsten DVM\, DABVP (Shelter Medicine Practice) \nCindy graduated from the University of Wisconsin School of Veterinary Medicine\, completed a shelter medicine internship at Colorado State University and a Shelter Medicine Residency at UC Davis. \nCurrently she is the Director of Outreach with the UC Davis Koret Shelter Medicine Program. Dr. Karsten’s interests include teaching and mentoring undergraduate and veterinary students\, interns and residents\, leading shelters through online Bootcamp and other interactive formats\, and providing accessible\, affordable veterinary care to everyone who seeks it. She also continues to work to understand her role and that of animal shelters in increasing awareness of social justice issues and implementing policies to bring about change. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://www.g2z.org.au/g2z-webinars-and-online-events.html

SUMMARY:Webinar - 6/23/22 - Nicole Wiebusch - Get Ready to Rally TEAM! - FDSA (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:Are you looking for something fun to do; an activity that will set a great foundation for rally or obedience training? Do you need some new goals to work toward with your dog? Let me tell you about the NEW TEAM Rally program! \nThe Fenzi TEAM Obedience program has become very popular\, and the additions of the TEAM Nosework and Cooperative Care have also been well received. Welcome to the 4th addition to the TEAM program – Rally! \nTEAM stands for Training Excellence Assessment Modules. It’s a program to encourage breaking down skills and quality training. TEAM is a standalone program but is extremely useful as a foundation for performance events in other venues. \nEach TEAM program is slightly different. For example\, the Obedience program focuses on precision and accuracy. The Rally program will focus on excellent foundation training but will be less strict on precision and will allow more communication between the handler and the dog. For a team looking for a slightly more laid-back approach to training behaviors\, TEAM Rally will be perfect! \nDoes this sound intriguing? Want to learn more? Jump ahead of the crowd with this in-depth look at the new TEAM Rally program! Join Nicole and explore how the program will be structured and the skills that will be needed.

SUMMARY:Webinar - 6/28/22 - Fancy Footwork: Practical Handling and Training Solutions for the Entire Shelter - Dogs Playing for Life
DESCRIPTION:While playgroups are the foundation of our shelter training program\, teaching shelter teams how to implement a generalized\, effective\, and enjoyable way to handle and train their dogs is another essential aspect of our canine programming! In this webinar\, we will teach the fundamentals of our “Fancy Footwork” techniques that focus on achieving good leash manners through the use of your FEET instead of your hands. Come learn this unique and highly effective approach that promotes dogs happily walking softly by your side\, offering tons of eye contact\, and wowing adopters! This new approach to leash work will enhance your handling skills and increase your ability to train ALL dogs\, even those that are highly aroused\, stressed\, fearful\, or not motivated by food\, all in an effort to improve quality of life and lifesaving for dogs living in shelters. \nAdditionally\, we will teach you how to implement our critically important kennel routines. The kennel areas of our nation’s shelters can be one of the most challenging and distressing environments that dogs–and their handlers–ever face. DPFL kennel routines have been developed and taught to shelters across the country in an effort to combat these challenges and to provide safer and more successful ways for dogs and people to maneuver through the kennels. \nThis is a 1.5-hour presentation followed by a Q&A session. This webinar will NOT be recorded and is scheduled on EASTERN TIME. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://us06web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_MvNzCQwzQ-a5ZeBnbVGw7g

SUMMARY:Webinar - 6/28/22 - Rescuing the “Rescuer”: The Challenging World of Rescue Hoarders - NACA/Justice Clearinghouse
DESCRIPTION:Animal Hoarding affects every city in America.  Rescue Hoarders can be especially challenging for jurisdictions to address. The community often formulates an opinion about these “Rescuers” before response agencies are even allowed to assess the situation. How often have you heard that\,”Their heart is too big\, or they’re doing the best they can\, or the animals are loved what more can  you want?”  This session will explore some tactics agencies charged with addressing rescue hoarders can employ in their community.  Whether you choose to address the issue now or not\, the problem does not go away.  In fact\, allowing rescue hoarders to operate without checks and balances only compounds an already complex problem.  If you’ve ever struggled to deal with a rescue hoarder in your community\, you won’t want to miss this session! \nPresenter \nBased out of Daytona Beach\, Florida\, Adam Leath is the Director of Volusia County Animal Services. He investigates and responds to situations involving animal victims of natural disasters and animal cruelty cases in Volusia County.  Leath was formerly a Regional Director of the Field Investigations and Response Team at the ASPCA where he led one of the largest operations in ASPCA history with the seizure of over 1\,000 animals in August of 2016. Leath has responded to multiple dogfighting operations throughout his time at the ASPCA\, including the second-largest dogfighting bust in U.S. history in 2013\, resulting in the seizure of more than 400 dogs. \nLeath holds a bachelor’s degree in animal science from the University of Tennessee and a Graduate Certificate in Veterinary Forensic Science from the University of Florida. He is a courtesy Assistant Professor for the Department of Comparative\, Diagnostic\, and Population Medicine at the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine.  He is a Director on the Board of Directors for the National Animal Care and Control Association. Leath is a Past President of the International Veterinary Forensic Sciences Association and is a Certified National Animal Cruelty Investigator through the University of Missouri. He has also been certified in Equine Cruelty Investigation through the University of Colorado. Leath has been certified as an expert witness in animal fighting and animal cruelty in the states of Florida and New York. \n\nWEBSITE LINK:  https://www.justiceclearinghouse.com/webinar/rescuing-the-rescuer-the-challenging-world-of-rescue-hoarders/

SUMMARY:National Shelter Medicine Rounds – 6/28/22 – Discussion: Trauma-Informed Approach to Behavioral Care in Shelters – UW and UC Davis Shelter Medicine Programs
DESCRIPTION:On June 14 Dr. Sheila Segurson presented ‘A Trauma-Informed Approach to Behavioral Care in Shelters’ for National Rounds. For those who missed her live presentation on 6/14 you can view the recording here: https://youtu.be/hgG914xaQqw. We will be holding rounds this month as the same layout as last month; on June 28th there will be a group discussion on this presentation topic. \nPlease read more on this topic below and we hope to see many of you joining us. \nA Trauma-Informed Approach to Behavioral Care in Shelters with Dr. Sheila Segurson\, DVM\, DACVB\, CDBC\, CCBC \nAs our communities become more informed about recognizing and responding to human trauma\, there’s growing interest in the impact of chronic stress and trauma on animal behavior. There’s a large volume of evidence that demonstrates the negative impact of trauma on human health and welfare. While research in animals isn’t focused on the concept of trauma\, this session will share evidence that demonstrates the impact of stressful experiences on animal health and welfare. Acknowledgement of the role of trauma in animal behavior encourages us to be more understanding and respond more appropriately to undesirable or challenging behaviors that may be caused by trauma. This session will discuss practical ways you can prevent trauma and help animals to recover. \nNational Shelter Medicine Rounds is held on the same Zoom link for every session: \nhttps://uwmadison.zoom.us/j/97442637396 \nMeeting ID: 974 4263 7396 \nOne tap mobile \n+13017158592\,\,97442637396# US (Washington DC) \n+13126266799\,\,97442637396# US (Chicago) \nThis group is made up of shelter veterinarians\, shelter vet trainees\, and upper level shelter leadership. If you know anyone that would like to be added to the national shelter medicine rounds email list to regularly receive scheduling updates moving forward\, please have them email a request to be added to the email group to nationalsheltermedicinerounds@vetmed.wisc.edu. \nWeb Conference System Details: \nIf you have not used Zoom before I’d recommend you join at the zoom link in advance to give it a test run on your computer as you’ll likely need to do a quick download. SUMMARY:Grant Opportunity – Deadline 6/30/22 – Open Grant – California for All Animals
DESCRIPTION:The UC Davis Koret Shelter Medicine Program (KSMP) is announcing requests for proposals for the California for All Animals Program. We are excited to partner with you to make an impact on animal shelters in California. The Open Grants period will commence on May 1\, 2022 and end on June 30\, 2022. \nLearn more and apply here: https://www.californiaforallanimals.com/grants/open-grants/ \nWho is eligible? \n\nmunicipal shelters\,\nprivate shelters with municipal contracts\, and\nprivate shelters without municipal contracts that house animals in a brick and mortar facility and are open to the public a minimum of fifteen hours per week for adoptions and return to home.\n\n\nAnimal control agencies that provide field services and animal control functions are also eligible to apply\, even if they do not perform sheltering services.\n\nMost grants will be funded in a range of $25\,000 to $200\,000; however\, if your proposal is outside this range\, reach out to our team and we can talk through it. \nWhat are the guidelines? \nThe goal of the California for All Animals program is to reduce the euthanasia of healthy and treatable animals in shelters. That means all shelters in California are able to provide every animal at risk with the Right Care in the Right Place at the Right Time to the Right Outcome. To reach this goal\, we are focusing on four categories: Outcomes (Adoptions\, Foster\, Return to Home and Community)\, Field Services and Animal Control\, Care of Animals in the Shelter\, and Community Support. \nOutcomes (Adoptions\, Return to Home and Return to Community) \nWhat does your organization need to increase adoptions\, foster programs\, transfer to partners\, return to home\, and return to community of origin (community cats\, for example). Proposals may include requests for veterinary care\, supplies\, equipment\, technology\, training and staffing. \nField Services and Animal Control \nAnimal control officers play a vital role in an agency’s connection to the community. What does your organization need to return loose pets to their homes and provide support to community members? Examples include supplies such as kitten kits\, fencing\, trolleys\, doghouses\, vouchers for spay/neuter and medical care\, microchip scanners\, collars and leashes\, and technology to enhance mobile work. Proposals will also be accepted for training for animal control officers to provide supportive services. \nCare of Animals in the Shelter \nGrant funding in this category should focus on physical\, medical and mental well-being of animals that are in the shelter’s care. This includes veterinary care supplies and services\, behavior and enrichment\, volunteer and foster programs\, equipment and supplies including housing improvements and interaction spaces. \nIntake Management and Community Support \nGrant funding in this category should focus on strengthening and streamlining your organization’s ability to provide services to the community. Examples include supplies and veterinary care to keep pets in their homes and communities of origin\, developing appointment-based services for intake\, resources for handling calls such as an automated system\, finder foster programs\, website messaging\, text messaging\, hotline run by staff or volunteers\, and staffing for outreach and engagement. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://www.californiaforallanimals.com/grants/open-grants/
