SUMMARY:National Shelter Medicine Rounds - 6/14/22 - A Trauma-Informed Approach to Behavioral Care in Shelters - UW and UC Davis Shelter Medicine Programs
DESCRIPTION:Tomorrow\, June 14th from 3-4pm CST\, Dr. Sheila Segurson will be presenting ‘A Trauma-Informed Approach to Behavioral Care in Shelters’ for National Rounds. We will be holding rounds this month as the same layout as last month where tomorrow will be the topic presentation and the following rounds on June 28th will be a group discussion on this presentation topic. Please read more on this topic below and we hope to see many of you joining us tomorrow! This session will be recorded and shared with the group after the presentation so those who can’t join us live can still watch and join for the discussion. \nA Trauma-Informed Approach to Behavioral Care in Shelters with Dr. Sheila Segurson\, DVM\, DACVB\, CDBC\, CCBC \nAs our communities become more informed about recognizing and responding to human trauma\, there’s growing interest in the impact of chronic stress and trauma on animal behavior. There’s a large volume of evidence that demonstrates the negative impact of trauma on human health and welfare. While research in animals isn’t focused on the concept of trauma\, this session will share evidence that demonstrates the impact of stressful experiences on animal health and welfare. Acknowledgement of the role of trauma in animal behavior encourages us to be more understanding and respond more appropriately to undesirable or challenging behaviors that may be caused by trauma. This session will discuss practical ways you can prevent trauma and help animals to recover. \nNational Shelter Medicine Rounds is held on the same Zoom link for every session: \nhttps://uwmadison.zoom.us/j/97442637396 \nMeeting ID: 974 4263 7396 \nOne tap mobile \n+13017158592\,\,97442637396# US (Washington DC) \n+13126266799\,\,97442637396# US (Chicago) \nThis group is made up of shelter veterinarians\, shelter vet trainees\, and upper level shelter leadership. If you know anyone that would like to be added to the national shelter medicine rounds email list to regularly receive scheduling updates moving forward\, please have them email a request to be added to the email group to nationalsheltermedicinerounds@vetmed.wisc.edu. \nWeb Conference System Details: \nIf you have not used Zoom before I’d recommend you join at the zoom link in advance to give it a test run on your computer as you’ll likely need to do a quick download. SUMMARY:Webinar - 6/16/22 - Finder to Foster to Adoption: Keeping Animals in the Community - CalAnimals
DESCRIPTION:In the right situations\, stray animals found by community members can be quickly and legally moved from stray to foster status\, and then adopted out\, without ever entering local shelters. While shelter personnel involvement is integral to this process\, the burdens on shelters\, and the stressors to the animals\, can be reduced to a minimum. There has been some confusion about the right (legal) way to run such a program\, as well as how to do it with the greatest chance of success for animals\, in a short time frame\, and with minimal impact on the shelter staff and community. This webinar will lay out best practices for “Foster-Finder” programs\, that will benefit all involved. \n\n\nPresenters: Bruce Wagman\, Attorney\, and Cindi Delany\, DVM \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_3vKMm5FuQl2uT78edazuCQ

SUMMARY:Webinar - 6/16/22 - Troubleshooting Challenges - Separation Related Behavior Problems (SRBP) - GoodPup
DESCRIPTION:The GoodPup Webinar Series focuses on dog behavior topics designed specifically to help anyone who works at rescues and shelters. This presentation is free and open to anyone in your community including staff\, volunteers\, fosters and adopters. \nIn this webinar we’ll talk about how to assess separation related behaviors; how to prevent and treat them. \nAnyone who has personal experience with separation related behavior problems knows how overwhelming and frustrating they can be in addition to worrying about the stress the dog is experiencing when left alone. The good news is we can help decrease this stress\, ultimately helping to resolve the behavioral concerns coinciding with it. In this webinar we’ll talk about how to assess separation related behaviors; how to use management for prevention; and how to begin training in order to change the emotional stress some dog’s experience when left by themselves. If you have a dog or work with dogs presenting with separation related behavior problems\, I invite you to join us and learn how to get this process started. \nPresenter: Kait Hembree VTS (Behavior)\, CVT\, KPA CTP\, Head of Training at GoodPup \nKait Hembree and her team designed the GoodPup Training Program using the latest scientific research and positive reinforcement training techniques. Kait’s career in Animal Behavior spans decades. She has extensive experience working with behavior modification both in and outside veterinary practices and animal shelters. She regularly consults as a dog behavior expert across the country. \nAbout GoodPup:\nGoodPup is a positive reinforcement dog training service. We connect dog owners to certified trainers for 1-on-1 training over video chat.  GoodPup offers a free partnership program for shelters and rescues. SUMMARY:Webinar - 6/18/22 and 6/25/22 - Biology of Dog Aggression with Tim Lewis - Puppyworks (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:More than ever before canine professionals are approached by clients with dogs who exhibit aggressive behavior. Within the population both have increased\, the number of dogs exhibiting various degrees of aggression as well as people’s sensitivity to aggressive dog behavior. \nIn this two-part webinar series\, we will look at the biological and environmental causes of dog aggression from DNA through gut biomes to chronic stress. We will look at the biological mechanisms behind different management and treatment options so you better understand what might work and when. \nEnvironmental and learning effects are always superimposed upon genetic influences\, but aggressive behavior does not occur in a biological vacuum. We will define “normal aggression” versus symptoms for maladaptive aggression responses. \nWHEN \nSaturdays June 18 & 25\, 2022 at 9:00 AM West Coast\, 10:00 AM Mountain\, 11:00 AM Central & 12:00 Noon Eastern Time. Or view the recordings at any time\, available the day after each live session. \n\n\n\nPROGRAM DETAILS \nSession One: Saturday\, June 18\, 2022 – In this session we will set the stage\, clarify terminologies\, discuss the extent of the issues & explore the biological basis of canine aggression! \n\n\n Session Two: Saturday\, June 25\, 2022  - A dive into the intrinsic biological controls of aggression\, the biological basis of aggression management through mechanical controls to medical aggression reducers. \n\n\n\nWEBSITE LINK:  https://www.puppyworks.com/aggression

SUMMARY:Webinar - 6/22/22 - The Four Rights: How can your shelter achieve them for the animals in your community? - Getting 2 Zero
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special opportunity to explore the newly imagined Four Rights with Dr Cindy Karsten of the UC Davis Koret Shelter Medicine Program. \nThe foundation of the Million Cat Challenge rested on Five Key Initiatives\, refined and adapted to shelters of every size and type throughout North America\, which together represented a holistic approach that addressed the “before\, during and after” for any cat at risk of shelter entry. These initiatives were proven by over 3.5 million more cat lives saved by over 1500 Challenger Shelters. \nNow\, #ThanksToMaddie\, we’re thinking bigger. The Five Key Initiatives have expanded to include other species at risk in shelters and evolved into the Four Rights\, with community services\, humane care within the shelter\, and appropriate outcomes for the animals that do come in all working in concert to support one another. Join us in this interactive session\, imagining and creating a world in which every single shelter is able to provide every animal at risk with the Right Care in the Right Place at the Right Time to the Right Outcome. \nPresenter: Dr Cynthia Karsten DVM\, DABVP (Shelter Medicine Practice) \nCindy graduated from the University of Wisconsin School of Veterinary Medicine\, completed a shelter medicine internship at Colorado State University and a Shelter Medicine Residency at UC Davis. \nCurrently she is the Director of Outreach with the UC Davis Koret Shelter Medicine Program. Dr. Karsten’s interests include teaching and mentoring undergraduate and veterinary students\, interns and residents\, leading shelters through online Bootcamp and other interactive formats\, and providing accessible\, affordable veterinary care to everyone who seeks it. She also continues to work to understand her role and that of animal shelters in increasing awareness of social justice issues and implementing policies to bring about change. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://www.g2z.org.au/g2z-webinars-and-online-events.html

SUMMARY:Webinar - 6/23/22 - Nicole Wiebusch - Get Ready to Rally TEAM! - FDSA (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:Are you looking for something fun to do; an activity that will set a great foundation for rally or obedience training? Do you need some new goals to work toward with your dog? Let me tell you about the NEW TEAM Rally program! \nThe Fenzi TEAM Obedience program has become very popular\, and the additions of the TEAM Nosework and Cooperative Care have also been well received. Welcome to the 4th addition to the TEAM program – Rally! \nTEAM stands for Training Excellence Assessment Modules. It’s a program to encourage breaking down skills and quality training. TEAM is a standalone program but is extremely useful as a foundation for performance events in other venues. \nEach TEAM program is slightly different. For example\, the Obedience program focuses on precision and accuracy. The Rally program will focus on excellent foundation training but will be less strict on precision and will allow more communication between the handler and the dog. For a team looking for a slightly more laid-back approach to training behaviors\, TEAM Rally will be perfect! \nDoes this sound intriguing? Want to learn more? Jump ahead of the crowd with this in-depth look at the new TEAM Rally program! Join Nicole and explore how the program will be structured and the skills that will be needed. Get a sneak peak at the levels\, the signs\, and the courses. Bring your questions for the live Q&A following the webinar!
