SUMMARY:Webinar - 8/17/22 - The Poisoned Cue And Its Implications For Training - Dog iBox (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:Much is known about discriminative stimuli (cues) that are taught with either reinforcement or punishment contingencies and how these stimuli function as conditioned reinforcers or conditioned aversive stimuli. However\, little is known experimentally about discriminative stimuli established with both reinforcing as well as aversive events. It has been reported that the interaction between reinforcing and aversive events makes the discriminative function somewhat different from other discriminative stimuli (see Hearst & Sidman\, 1961). Karen Pryor (2002) called this phenomenon the poisoned cue. She suggested that a cue\, or discriminative stimulus\, that is established using both reinforcing and aversive events leads to the breakdown of the behavior both preceding and following the cue. This may be due to an increase in avoidance behaviors and the uncertainty that exists regarding the consequence that will follow. The poisoned cue phenomenon is important because it reflects many teaching situations in the real world. Discriminative stimuli in the real world are rarely taught with purely positive reinforcement or purely aversive consequences. \nThis presentation will show an experimental analysis of the poisoned cue and discuss techniques to identify situations that might involve poisoned cues. It will also discuss ways to overcome these cues. \nAbout the Speaker \nDr. Jesús Rosales-Ruiz is an Associate Professor in the Department of Behavior Analysis at the University of North Texas. He obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Kansas in 1995 under the direction of Dr. Donald M. Baer. During his graduate training\, he also worked closely with Dr. Ogden R. Lindsley. Dr. Rosales-Ruiz’s areas of interest include antecedent control of behavior\, generalization\, behavioral cusps\, fluency-based teaching\, treatment of autism\, teaching of academic behavior\, animal training\, rule-governed behavior\, and contingency-shaped behavior. He has served on several editorial boards\, including the Journal of Precision Teaching\, the European Journal of Behavior Analysis\, and the International Journal of Psychology and Psychological Therapy. DESCRIPTION:Program overview:  This series of educational modules will prepare participants to manage playgroups using the LIMA ethical standard and use conspecific interactions for behavior modification. \nCohort structure: Learners will be invited to join a cohort that will meet virtually for four months via the Litmos LMS platform.  Each cohort will be invited to twice-monthly (bi-weekly) hour-long\, live meetings via Zoom webinar so that questions can be answered live.  The bi-weekly meetings will feature video analysis and discussion of relevant topics. \nRegistration process: Individuals interested in joining each cohort must submit an “e-mail of interest” which includes the organization to which you belong to the executive director\, Mara Velez requesting to be added to the upcoming cohort. Each person must login at least twice a month and complete modules in order to continue. \nCompletion timeframe: Learners will be expected to complete one module per week\, which will require 60-90 minutes per week. The program consisting of Foundation and Intermediate modules will be expected to be completed within a four month time-frame. The total seat time per week is estimated to be two to two and a half hours\, which is a combination of reviewing the modules and completing assessments and assignments. \nOther requirements: In order to complete the assignments\, learners must have access to at least two species of animals during the cohort period (e.g.\, dogs\, cats\, rabbits\, birds\, horses). In addition\, we’d like them to think before they act. Mindless reactivity can be difficult to live with and manage in our dogs. \nIn this presentation Dr. Deb Jones is going to discuss her views on zen and the concept of impulse control. She will talk about the common usage of such terms as well as her working definitions\, and issues with the terminology and application. \nShe will talk about the advantages of teaching a dog to be zen and demonstrate specific exercises that can encourage thought before action. In particular\, Deb will focus on both the art and the science of zen work. SUMMARY:Online Event - 8/29/22 - Saving Luna: A Case Study on Rabbit Aggression - PPG (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:Emily came across a desperate post in a local rabbit rescue Facebook group\, begging someone to take a beautiful rabbit who was scheduled to be euthanized the next day for aggression. She instantly responded to take the case pro bono and would work with anyone who took on this bunny. Shortly after\, Emily received a friend request from the person who was dropping everything to pick up Luna\, and they immediately got to work. As Emily watched Luna throw herself\, growling and snarling\, at the fence separating them\, she wondered if she had bitten off more than she could chew! \nLuna’s aggression is more severe than any case Emily had experienced in her career working with rabbits. Luna’s triggers ranged from everything to the sound of a person approaching to the appearance of food falling into her pen. Anything associated with human interaction was met with a flying leap\, a growl\, and a fierce bite. While Luna’s clear stress and discomfort were a main focus of their efforts\, Emily was equally concerned with giving Luna’s humans the tools to manage her safely\, without (any more) bloodshed! Carefully managing Luna’s triggers\, mindful counterconditioning\, and enrichment were the tools we used to gradually build trust. Luna began to relax\, and so could everyone around her! \nLuna’s story is not just her own\, but the story of many rabbits who are euthanized in shelters for behavior issues. Rabbits whose issues are often created by the environment. This presentation will be useful to anyone who cares for rabbits in any capacity. \nLearning Objectives \n\nThe importance of stress management in aggression cases\nMinimizing triggers in an environment where everything seems to be a trigger\nDeveloping safe ways to interact with and care for an extremely over-threshold animal\nDirect juxtaposition of force-free strategies and force-based common methods in handling rabbit aggression\nManaging learned aggression in bunnies\n\nAbout the Presenter \nEmily earned her BS in Animal Science\, with a specialization in Equine Science\, from the University of Florida. Since 2010\, she has been providing professional behavior assistance to pets and their people. She completed two internships\, one at ZooTampa working primarily with Florida Manatees\, and one at Clearwater Marine Aquarium\, working with dolphins\, otters\, and pelicans. While in school\, she worked with Class Act for Dogs\, in Gainesville\, Florida\, under Dee Zurberg\, an accomplished trainer who emphasized not only kindness to dogs\, but kindness to their people as well. Since then\, she has continued her career in the zoo field working with a variety of species including tigers\, otters\, Flying foxes\, gibbons\, and as well as various avian\, aquatic\, and reptile species. Her main focus\, however\, is caring for orangutans. While not working at the zoo\, she has spent years working with dogs as a group class instructor and behavior consultant at Courteous Canine\, Inc. This led her to create Small Animal Resources\, a place for guardians of small pets to find accurate\, reliable information and to highlight the behavioral needs of small mammals. She has published articles for the Pet Professional Guild and the International Association for Animal Behavior Consultants on various topics related to rabbit care and behavior. DESCRIPTION:During this webinar\, attendees will learn how to identify potential threats and resources needed for community and personal pet and animal preparedness\, taking into consideration the COVID-19 environment. This program reviews the basics of the Incident Command System\, National Incident Management System\, and the need for and how to develop local Emergency Operation Plans. We will discuss the steps in Preparedness\, Mitigation\, Response\, and Recovery relating to animals during a disaster. Attendees will leave with a roadmap on how to begin the work of preparing themselves and their communities for a disaster\, as local animal welfare experts. \nPresenters: \nJennifer Toussaint is the Chief of Animal Control in Arlington County\, Virginia at the Animal Welfare League of Arlington. Jennifer joined the Animal Control team in early 2012 as a Deputy and accepted the Chief position in 2016. Since becoming Chief\, Jennifer has implemented a local ordinance in relation to exotic animal care and ownership. She has also expanded the Animal Control Department’s outreach efforts in providing additional support to pet owners to enable high owner-pet retention in the community. She specializes nationally in Humane Urban Wildlife Management practices and has been published multiple times on the topic. Jennifer is a CIT-trained officer and has trained animal control and welfare professionals on a variety of topics including: active listening\, emergency preparedness\, emotional support and service animals\, animal neglect/cruelty investigations\, and wildlife intake and triage. She is the Incident Commander for the Community Animal Response Team in Arlington\, VA. Jennifer is the 2017 recipient of the Virginia Animal Control Association Dr. Kent Roberts Animal Control Officer of the Year and received a commendation from the Virginia General Assembly for her service. In 2020\, Jennifer’s department won the Outstanding Agency of the Year award from the Virginia Animal Control Association. She is a graduate of Moravian College with a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science and Spanish.
