SUMMARY:Webinar - 11/10/22 - Friendly for a Reason: Expanding Shelter-Neuter-Vaccinate-Return Eligibility for Cats - Best Friends
DESCRIPTION:Historically\, community cat programs using shelter-neuter-vaccinate-return (SNVR) and trap-neuter-vaccinate-return (TNVR) have focused mostly on feral or fractious cats. But the most effective community cat programs take a more expansive approach. Listen as two cat programming experts talk about the issue of friendly community cats and their on-the-ground experience with saving more lives in different areas of the country. They’ll challenge your views on returning friendly cats with personal stories about their interactions with community members and discuss topics like safe SNVR practices and the benefits of expanding program eligibility. \nThis webinar is part of the Fall 2022 Webinar Series. Each webinar is pre-recorded and registering by October 12 gets you first access delivered directly to your inbox on the webinar date. Register for all five webinars or choose only the ones relevant to you. \nPresenter: Alesha Davidson – National Shelter Embed Program Specialist\, Best Friends Animal Society \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://network.bestfriends.org/education/2022-fall-webinar-series-registration

SUMMARY:Webinar - 11/10/22 - Train This Now! The Short List for your New Puppy - FDSA (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:Five core concepts that a baby can learn. Each one offers several tangents of training that will expand your puppy’s readiness for the world. \nWe used to train all the things as young as possible\, and puppies were often overwhelmed. Nowadays we tend to train very little while we let the relationship take shape. Our babies are learning at a phenomenal rate whether we like it or not\, so it’s important to teach them some things and it’s important to choose wisely! What to train when? Which things can wait a little longer and which things are best to teach while your puppy is very young? \nEach of these five lessons can be built over the next few weeks and you can build the more advanced elements over the next few months. You and your puppy will benefit immediately when you get started. Life skills and convenience\, confidence\, manners and learning to learn. This is a core group of compatible concepts that even a baby can master. You and your puppy will love the fun and games approach\, and you’ll enjoy a lifetime benefit from starting young. \nNote: This webinar is back by popular demand. With 35 years of experience working with multiple species in varying venues\, Aimee has become an internationally recognized trainer and speaker specializing in shelter programs that enhance quality of life and reduce canine euthanasia in animal shelters. The cornerstone of DPFL’s programming is our Every Dog\, Every Day!\, an out-of-kennel enrichment model that is in increasing demand and has been introduced to over 300 shelters across the U.S. and Canada. DPFL’s measured programming is contributing to safer shelter environments by reducing dog-human bites while increasing canine lifesaving at an average rate of 4% at participating shelters. Starting in 2017\, dogs most at risk of behavioral euthanasia can get a second chance at DPFL’s Canine Center Florida\, an advanced training and behavior care center with an overall save rate of 86 percent. \nAimee has regularly presented at animal welfare and professional dog training conferences such as HSUS’ Animal Expo\, Best Friend’s Annual Conferences\, Masters in Behavior Conference\, and the International Association of Canine Professionals (IACP) Conferences. DPFL was the inaugural recipient of Petco Foundation’s Love in Action Award. SUMMARY:Webinar - 11/15/22 - Vibrant\, Vulnerable Village Dogs and What We Can Learn About Our Pets From Them - PPG (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:Many dog guardians\, dog behaviour experts\, and dog researchers have a keen interest in village dogs (and other dogs who live at large). Some of the interest is simple: a curiosity about how these dogs live. However\, some people suggest that village dogs live a life which is much improved\, welfare-wise\, over the life of a pet dog. In this webinar\, dog trainer and anthropologist Kristi Benson will provide an introduction to village dogs (including definitions and geography). She will also review welfare-compromised and positive aspects of village dogs lives before looking at some of the lessons we can learn for pet dogs: enrichment\, foraging\, socializing\, environmental choices\, and so on. She will also comment on some of the potential pitfalls and flaws in the discussions about village dogs. \nLearning Objectives: \n\nEvaluate sources of expertise on village dogs and dog welfare\nUnderstand the difference between seeking good consequences vs. getting relief\, and why those separate motivations matter to this\ntopic\nIdentify the naturalistic fallacy in the context of discussing village dogs\nDevelop new ways to improve pet dog welfare based on lessons from village dogs\n\nAbout the Presenter \nKristi Benson is an honours graduate of\, and now on staff at\, the Academy for Dog Trainers. At the Academy\, she is a student mentor and coach\, and is in charge of the weekly webinars. Kristi is also in charge of special projects\, including the Husbandry Project\, which is a large co-operative veterinary care research study working with hundreds of dog owners\, testing the efficiency and usefulness of a series of training plans. In her private practice\, Kristi works with dog guardians through her self-paced online classes. She also loves helping both the dogs and the humans in the equation and brings her trademark combination of humour and compassion to her courses\, no matter the topic. \nKristi also enjoys reaching out to dog owners through writing. Besides her own blog\, she also regularly writes for the Academy for Dog Trainers’ blog and is a Special Correspondent to Zazie Todd’s Companion Animal Psychology. For ten years\, she ran a sled dog micro-rescue with her partner\, and fostered\, house-trained\, obedience-trained\, and re-homed racing sled dogs. She lives rurally in northern British Columbia\, Canada. She has gained the PCBC-A credential\, is Fear Free certified\, and is on the Fear Free Speaker’s Bureau. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://petprofessionalguild.com/event-4986127

SUMMARY:Webinar - 11/17/22 - "Cats Gotta Cat!: Environmental Enrichment for the Feline Patient" - ACVB (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:Those of us who share our lives with cats are very aware that\, behaviorally speaking\, they have diverged very little from their wild ancestors. Although studies are clear that our feline companions live much safer and longer lives when kept indoors\, these “house panthers” need an environment that provides them with the opportunity to express the unique\, species specific behaviors they share with their larger counterparts. A home lacking these outlets results in a condition of chronic stress which can cause unwanted behaviors from\, and impact the physical health of\, your cat. \nIn this webinar\, Dr. Jenny Biehunko will cover: \n—How a cat’s environment affects behavioral issues such as house soiling\, destructive behavior\, and social conflict as well as medical problems such as skin\, endocrine\, and urinary disorders.\n—Designing and optimizing an enriched environment for indoor cats and choosing a layout that works for each individual\n—Implementing an enrichment plan and incorporating enrichment into treatment plans for both medical and behavioral issues. \nAnd much more! \nDr. Jenny Beard Biehunko is a 1998 graduate of the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine. Soon after beginning small animal practice\, Jenny developed a special interest in Behavioral Medicine\, and she began seeing behavior cases in a private practice setting. In 2017\, she began a Residency with the American College of Veterinary Behaviorists under the mentorship of Dr. Lynne Seibert. Jenny teaches courses in Ethology and Behavior at both the Auburn and Tuskegee Colleges of Veterinary Medicine. In addition to practicing small animal medicine\, she owns a behavior exclusive practice in Birmingham\, Alabama\, where she focuses primarily on canine\, feline\, equine\, and avian cases. She also has a passion for working with the local veterinary and shelter communities on integrating lower stress and humane handling methods into their practices. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://register.gotowebinar.com/register/1472665409779268109
