SUMMARY:Webinar - 9/8/22 - Maddie's Insights: What laboratory studies may tell us about stress in a dog shelter - Maddie's Fund
DESCRIPTION:Maddie’s Insights are monthly webcasts with practical tips based on current research to help pets and people. \nThis month\, Dr. Michael Hennessy\, Professor of Psychology\, Wright State University\, will be joined by Regina Willen\, Founder and Director at HALO K9 Behavior. They will discuss how basic scientific research informs our understanding of the stress dogs undergo in a shelter environment. They will examine immediate effects of entry to a shelter as well as potential long-term consequences. How basic research findings suggest practicable means for reducing or preventing these outcomes will also be considered. \nAfter the webcast\, join us on Maddie’s Pet Forum to continue the discussion and exchange ideas: https://maddies.fund/MIwebcastStress \nThis webinar will be recorded and has been pre-approved for 1.0 Certified Animal Welfare Administrator continuing education credits by The Association for Animal Welfare Advancement and by the National Animal Care & Control Association. \nREGISTER HERE https://maddiesfund-org.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_FddH0bQWRpiH4HedjwY28A \nPresenters\nMichael Hennessy\, PhD\, Professor of Psychology\, Wright State University\nDr. Hennessy is a behavioral neuroscientist with interests in both basic laboratory research on stress and how this research can be applied to reduce the impact of stress on dogs in animal shelters. He is currently Professor of Psychology at Wright State University in Dayton\, Ohio. He earned his PhD in experimental psychology at Northern Illinois University and then completed post-doctoral training and served as Research Associate in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University. He subsequently held the position of Research Psychologist at SRI International\, and since coming to Wright State\, has had stints as a visiting scholar at both the California National Primate Research Center at the University of California\, Davis and the Department of Behavioral Biology at the University of Muenster in Muenster\, Germany. \nDr. Hennessy’s basic research focuses primarily on how psychological stressors impact neural and hormonal systems\, how social factors can enhance or reduce these stress responses\, and the lasting impact of stress in early life on later neural and psychological function. His work with dogs is focused entirely on finding means of reducing the stress of shelter housing and its impact on behavior and adoption success. \nDr. Hennessy has served on the American Psychological Association’s Committee on Animal Research and Ethics\, which he chaired in 2018. He is past president of the International Society for Developmental Psychobiology and is a member of the editorial board of the journal Developmental Psychobiology. He previously was named outstanding faculty member of the year at Wright State. He has served as a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the California National Primate Research Center and currently serves on the External Scientific Advisory Board of the Waltham foundation. Dr. Hennessy’s basic research has been funded nearly continuously by the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation. His work with dogs has been funded by various sources including the Waltham Foundation\, the IAMs company\, and the ASPCA. SUMMARY:Webinar - 9/8/22 - Touchy Heely: Contact Heeling for Ringsport\, Behavior Work and Life! - FDSA (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:Contact heeling” means teaching your dog to maintain physical contact with your body while also allowing them the freedom to look around. You might be moving\, standing still\, sitting in a chair\, or completing a task\, and your dog will press against you to maintain contact! While originally trained for the Sports of French and Mondio Ring\, this skill is useful in crowded environments\, during training classes\, or between working exercises…anywhere dogs frequently lose contact with their handler. In behavior work\, contact heeling can allow both you and your dog to observe the environment while simultaneously retaining physical awareness of each other. So many uses! \nUnlike precision heeling\, there is no expectation of eye contact or a precise position at the handler’s side. Indeed\, the dog can be taught to rotate all the way around the handler – the only criteria is continuous physical contact. As a result\, contact heeling can be relaxing and enjoyable for both parties. \nSound useful? It is! Join Denise Fenzi and learn how she teaches contact heeling\, along with a discussion of the varied ways she uses this skill in both training and in daily life. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://www.fenzidogsportsacademy.com/index.php/self-study/webinars

SUMMARY:Webinar - 9/14/22 - Supported Self-Rehoming Without Surrendering: Setting Up Supportive Services with Safety and Success - HASS
DESCRIPTION:Approximately a quarter of animals enter animal shelters under the intake type called “owner surrender.” Pet parents often do not know how to safely and successfully rehome their pets themselves. Supported self-rehoming is a great way for organizations to give pet parents who can no longer keep their pets the tools they need to safely rehome their own pets with ongoing support from shelter staff and volunteers. Supported self-rehoming not only gives pet parents an opportunity to be a part of selecting a new family and the potential for continued communication after\, it also reduces the number of family pets who unnecessarily have to live in a kennel\, taking a valuable space away from another pet in need. \nJoin us for an info-packed webinar where our speakers\, Kaycey Adair from Greenville County Animal Services\, Ana De Luccia from Adopt-A-Pet and Lucy Fernandez from Austin Pets Alive!\, will highlight how organizations can begin offering supported self-rehoming options to pet parents who need it. They’ll also discuss ways to utilize social media and other technology solutions that fit your organization’s needs\, and best practices for communicating these programs to stakeholders and your community. Don’t miss it! \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://zoom.us/webinar/register/1116613782408/WN_3cfnr2dER96WQR7nECZc7w

SUMMARY:Grant Opportunity - 9/15/22 to 10/15/22 - Sniptember Spay/Neuter Grants - California for All Animals
DESCRIPTION:Let’s grow our spay/neuter capacity together\, California! \nWe’re doubling down on our commitment to help you provide the care and services that strengthen the bonds and remove the barriers between pets in your community and the people who care for them with Sniptember\, a 30-day spay/neuter grant blitz to continue the effort to build back our surgery capacity and relieve the bottlenecks that are keeping animals in our shelters for too long. \nMunicipal animal shelters\, private animal shelters with municipal contracts\, and private shelters are eligible to respond to this RFP\, even if they already received a California for All Animals grant this year. We know you have work to do so we’ve kept the application process simple: Submit your one-page proposal\, budget\, and estimated impact statement. \nVeterinary clinics and spay/neuter organizations without a brick and mortar intake facility are encouraged to partner with animal shelters on proposals. The shelter would act as the recipient of the funding and then contract with the spay/neuter organization for services. If you need help partnering with a shelter(s) in your region\, reach out to us at grants@californiaforallanimals.com and we’ll connect you. \nThe funding priority for this grant cycle is to increase capacity for spay/neuter services for animal shelters\, which is defined as spay/neuter of animals in the shelter\, referred by field services and those at risk of ending up in the shelter\, for example pet owners experiencing homelessness\, pet owners residing in zip codes of high intake\, and priority community animals. Operational costs associated with increasing capacity should be included in the proposal. \nRFPs will be accepted from September 15 – October 15\, 2022. Applicants will be notified via email by November 15\, 2022. For more information visit California for All Animals. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://www.californiaforallanimals.com/grants/sniptember-spay-neuter-grants/
