SUMMARY:Hybrid Conference - 10/27/22 to 10/30/22 - 2022 Annual Conference - AAFP (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:The 2022 AAFP Conference will be a hybrid event\, which means it will be both in-person and virtual. The in-person portion of the meeting will take place at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center in Pittsburgh\, Pennsylvania. \nThe AAFP is excited to announce this year’s annual conference theme\, Enriching Feline Care & the Veterinary Experience. When we think about being Cat Friendly\, we often think of handling and interactions with cats\, however much of Cat Friendly is about elevating the standard of medical and surgical care that cats receive. While the conference will cover aspects of the environment\, interactions\, techniques\, and educating caregivers\, it will also cover many medical topics. This enables even the most experienced participant to stay current and up-to-date on feline medicine topics. No matter what your role in the practice or your level of experience with cats\, this will be a conference that allows everyone to increase their feline knowledge in order to continue to elevate the standard of care for cats. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://catvets.com/education/conference/2022/registration

DESCRIPTION:Maddie’s Insights are monthly webcasts with practical tips based on current research to help pets and people. \nOn March 11\, 2020\, the World Health Organization deemed the coronavirus outbreak a worldwide pandemic\, and subsequently a nationwide emergency was declared in the United States. During this time\, media outlets reported increased interest in foster caregiving and adoption of shelter pets. In this talk\, Dr. Gunter will describe her research team’s examination of canine foster caregiving at 19 US animal shelters during the first four months of the COVID-19 pandemic and what they learned about shelters’ utilization of foster caregiving\, the foster caregivers and their relationships to the shelter\, and how monetary resources influenced foster caregiving and dog outcomes. Specifically\, Dr. Gunter will discuss key takeaways for foster recruitment\, trial adoption programs\, caregiving practices\, and behavioral support that can be utilized in our post-pandemic world. \nAfter the webcast\, join us on Maddie’s Pet Forum to continue the discussion\, ask questions and exchange ideas: https://maddies.fund/MIwebcastFoster \nThis webinar will be recorded and has been pre-approved for 1.0 Certified Animal Welfare Administrator continuing education credits by The Association for Animal Welfare Advancement and by the National Animal Care & Control Association. \nRegister here: https://maddiesfund-org.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_g6N2KwBmSsOiXf07ht1sTQ \nPresenter\nDr. Lisa Gunter\, Assistant Professor\, Coastal Carolina University \nLisa Gunter\, PhD\, CBCC-KA is an Assistant Professor at Coastal Carolina University in the Department of Psychology. Before beginning her graduate studies\, she worked for nearly a decade with dogs in animal shelters and with pet dogs and their owners. The goal of Lisa’s research is to better the lives of companion animals and their owners. To this aim\, she has investigated the breed labeling of shelter dogs\, their breed heritage\, shelter housing and social interactions\, temporary and long-term fostering\, short-term outings\, behavioral indicators of welfare\, post-adoption interventions focused on owner retention – and more recently\, fostering during the pandemic and safety net programs to help keep people and their pets together. Under the mentorship of Clive Wynne\, Lisa earned her Master’s in 2015\, and her PhD in 2018 as a graduate student in the behavioral neuroscience and comparative psychology program at Arizona State University. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://maddiesfund-org.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_g6N2KwBmSsOiXf07ht1sTQ

SUMMARY:Webinar - 11/3/22 - The Elemental Questions with Suzanne Clothier - FDSA (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:How the dog responds to life is highly individual\, blending temperament with personality and history — and of course\, the environment and others around him. Understanding the dog within the context of this complex blend of information helps handlers work to modify and adapt their handling and goals for enhanced relationships and better performance. \nWhatever your training goals or sport\, the Elemental Questions™ help you truly “see the dog” and provide the detailed information about each animal as he is. This is where truly humane training is grounded: in detailed knowledge about the individual dog. \nSuzanne’s simple but powerful Elemental Questions are: \n\nHello? Looks at the dog’s social interactions\nWho are you? Asks about how the dog perceives and responds to his world\nHow is this for you? Asks about the immediate situation and the dog’s mental\, physical & emotional balance\nCan you…? Looks at the dog’s physical abilities & limitations\nMay I…? Seeks ways to gain the dog’s cooperation and permission\nCan we…? Balancing the dog/handler team’s abilities and limitations against goals\n\nFor each dog\, the answers to these questions provide a wealth of information to those interested in helping that dog be all that he can be. \nNote: This webinar is back by popular demand. SUMMARY:Webinar - 11/5/22 - Play Is Magic! with Trish McMillan - Shelter Behavior Hub (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:Humans can sometimes come off as untrustworthy of dogs. People may lure dogs in close with a treat and then suddenly reach toward or grab them. If you’re out in the play yard and your new best dog friend tells you the humans are OK\, you might just believe them. And if humans approaching the front of your kennel means you’re about to go to playgroup or on a group walk\, you may start thinking humans are OK too. Learn the many ways dogs can help other dogs\, in and outside of the shelter environment. In this webinar\, you will learn about social learning\, dog play dynamics\, and how to manage playgroups in shelters. \nThese webinars are suitable for veterinary professionals\, animal trainers\, animal behaviorists\, shelter and rescue staff and volunteers\, and anyone with an interest in evidence-based behavior intervention. \nHere is the list of webinar dates\, topics\, and times: \n\nOctober 1\, 2022: Behavior Assessments for Shelter Dogs\, 11am to 12:30pm EST\nNovember 5\, 2022: Play is Magic!\, 11am to 12:30pm EST\nDecember 3\, 2022: Conversation-Based Adoptions\, 11am to 12:30pm EST\n\nThis is an online event. SUMMARY:Webinar - 11/7/22 - Highly Sensitive Dogs - Dr. Maya Bräm - Dog iBox (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:The understanding that personality influences how an individual reacts to (environmental) stimuli has markedly increased in the past years. This is reflected by the rising number of studies on this topic not only in humans\, but also in animals. As dogs live in the same social environment and in near proximity with humans\, this species is particularly suitable to study in this respect. One personality trait that has been shown to have such an influence in humans – and now also in dogs – is high sensitivity or “sensory processing sensitivity”. \nThis webinar will give an insight into this personality trait\, present the most interesting results of our research in dogs and offer some suggestions of how this knowledge might help prevent and treat (behavioural) problems and thereby increase the quality of life of dogs and their surroundings. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://www.dog-ibox.com/en/highly-sensitive-dogs.html

SUMMARY:Online Event - 11/7/22 - Pro-Partnership: Panel discussion around acknowledging current harms and moving forward in solidarity. - CARE
DESCRIPTION:Earlier this month\, a recording of a Los Angeles City Council meeting was published by the LA Times. In it\, three City Council members and the president of a labor union\, are heard using racist and homophobic terms to describe constituents and fellow city council members. Discuss the anti-black\, indigenous and the LGBTQ+ comments made by Nury Martinez for CARE. \nHow do we talk about and address anti Blackness and anti-Indigeneity as Black Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC)? How do we acknowledge the harms and current reality to move forward in solidarity? To understand the issues and grapple with these questions\, we have invited a group of panelists to discuss. \nPanel:\n1. Alina Luna\n2. DDm\n3. Miguel Ruelas\n4.
