SUMMARY:Webinar - 6/22/23 - Stand Up for the Animals with a Case You Can Stand Behind - NACA/Justice Clearinghouse
DESCRIPTION:Animal protection professionals rely on prosecutors to hold animal cruelty offenders accountable. When veterinarians\, law enforcement\, animal control officers\, and animal care entities put significant resources into an investigation\, it can be disheartening and frustrating when a prosecutor declines to charge on that case. Instead of looking for fault at the prosecutorial level\, this presentation will hold up a mirror to the entities working these cases and reflect on primary areas that can be most improved in order to present a case more viable for prosecution. \nIn this presentation\, Animal Legal Defense Fund Managing Attorney Emily Lewis\, will not delve into the specifics of how to adequately conduct an animal cruelty investigation\, but rather will provide insight—specific to animal protection professionals who are relatively new to the field—as to how to anticipate the needs of a prosecutor in your case investigation and presentation. Prosecutorial discretion notwithstanding\, evidence tracking\, veterinary collaboration\, and report writing are fundamental to animal cruelty case processing\, and are all within the control of individuals participating in these cases. \nThe webinar will emphasize how to strengthen and highlight these aspects of your animal cruelty cases in a way that will give them the consideration they deserve. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://www.justiceclearinghouse.com/webinar/stand-up-for-the-animals-with-a-case-you-can-stand-behind/

SUMMARY:Webinar - 6/23/23 - Think Anesthesia: Myths\, Mysteries\, & Misconceptions\, Part 2 - Think Anesthesia
DESCRIPTION:By popular request!!! Join this month’s live webinar\, Think Anesthesia: Myths\, Mysteries\, & Misconceptions\, Part 2 presented by Amanda M. Shelby\, BSc\, RVT\, VTS (Anesthesia & Analgesia) and Elizabeth A. Martinez\, DVM\, DACVAA. Current dogma undoubtedly has influence over decisions veterinary professionals make surrounding the peri-anesthetic period. Often these incontrovertibly true beliefs originate from a misconception\, ounce of truth\, diluted or embellished by word of mouth and/or articles of opinion or limited weighted experiences eventually being commonly understood or accepted. This presentation is complementary to the previous presentation and investigates using an evidence-based approach to assess some of the common myths or misconceptions surround the peri-anesthetic period. This presentation is worth 1 hour of RACE approved CE for veterinarians and veterinary technicians. An on-demand recording will be available within a week following the event. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://www.thinkanesthesia.education/live-webinar/2023/06/think-anesthesia-myths-mysteries-misconceptions-part-2

SUMMARY:Webinar - 6/26/23 - Separation Anxiety Webinar Series: The Truths and the Training of Separation Anxiety - PPG (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:These can also be signed up for individually. They are listed as three different events. When you register for the live events\, you will also receive copies of the three individual event recordings. \nThree Webinars in June – Each Webinar is at Noon ET \nThe What and Why of Separation Anxiety – June 12th \nDogs experiencing stress when home alone are not at all uncommon. Separation anxiety affects approximately 20% of the pet dog population and is one of the most commonly discussed disorders in the fields of applied animal behavior and veterinary behavior. Yet\, despite such prevalence\, there remains considerable confusion about what separation anxiety is and why it exists. \nAre you interested in understanding separation-related behaviors further? Then\, this webinar is for you. This webinar will dive into a discussion defining separation anxiety and its associated behaviors\, in addition to reviewing the somewhat elusive aspects of why we are seeing such a high incidence of the issue. \nThe Many Separation Anxiety Myths – June 19th \nThere is so much contradictory information out there about separation anxiety—much of which includes myths that need busting. Unfortunately\, our industry is rife with myths in virtually every aspect of dog training\, and separation anxiety is no exception. As a result\, dog trainers and dog guardians alike are inundated with conflicting information about how to help dogs suffering from alone-time behavior problems. \nHave you ever wanted to better understand the myths about separation anxiety? This webinar will dissect many myths about causation and treatment for a clearer understanding of this disorder. Many of the myths reviewed will be genuinely eye-opening\, allowing for a more efficient and effective means of resolution. \nThe Truths and the Training of Separation Anxiety – June 26th \nImplementing a systematic desensitization protocol is the gold standard for working with separation anxiety. It is essential to remember that there are two equally important words in that phrase – both systematic and desensitization are paramount for this process. \nUnfortunately\, while the research on this disorder is significant\, concrete evidence surrounding effective treatment remains limited. Separation anxiety training is a complex topic that deserves in-depth discussion. In this webinar\, we will review the various aspects of what truly makes systematic desensitization the gold standard for resolving separation-related behavior problems. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://petprofessionalguild.com/event-5205862

SUMMARY:Webinar - 6/28/23 - Northern Tier Shelter Initiative Zoomies: How Agency Culture & Community Engagement Helps Reunite Lost Pets - ASPCAPro
DESCRIPTION:National return to owner (RTO) rates hover around 40% for stray and lost dogs and it’s even lower (4%) for cats. The Northern Tier Shelter Initiative (NTSI) team became curious when they recognized that Northern Tier shelters’ RTO rates tend to be higher than the national average. In fact\, organizations reporting to the NTSI Shelter Animals Count Coalition return\, on average\, 64% of stray dogs and 8% of stray cats. Returning animals back to homes they already have is vital to ending overcrowding and euthanasia in shelters. In this webinar\, you will hear from three agencies: Circle of Friends\, ND; City of Havre\, MT; and Heart of the Valley\, MT about how and why they have been successfully reuniting pets with their families in their communities. \nTakeaways \n\nUnderstand how building a culture of reuniting lost pets is key to helping get more lost pets home.\nLearn how peers are using community engagement as a strategy for public awareness and ensuring pet caretakers know what to do if they lose or find a pet.\nHear from Northern Tier shelter leadership about future plans to increase cat reunification.\n\nWEBSITE LINK:  https://www.aspcapro.org/training/webinar/northern-tier-shelter-initiative-zoomies-how-agency-culture-community-engagement

SUMMARY:Webinar - 6/28/23 - Don’t Eat That! – Force free food-avoidance training for “Hoover Dogs” with Simone Mueller - PPG (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:Living with a dog who relentlessly scavenges food can be exhausting. Instead of enjoying relaxed walks with their dogs\, dog owners are constantly scanning the environment for discarded food and feel frustrated as they have to fish something disgusting out of their dog’s mouth\, yet again. \nThe problem is that scavenging is a deep-rooted\, natural behaviour\, making it much more challenging to train than other canine behaviours. \nHowever\, there is a structured food-avoidance training program that can help manage a dog’s scavenging behaviour in a kind\, effective way – achieving long-term results without aversive training techniques. \nIn this presentation we are going to talk about: \n\nWhy dogs love to scavenge\nWhich methods you should avoid using\nHow does force-free food avoidance training work\nWhat are the first steps when clients come to you with a “hoover dog”\nWhat are scavenging games and how can they help\n\nAbout the Presenter \nSimone Mueller\, MA is a certified dog trainer and dog behaviour consultant (ATN) from Germany. \nSimone specialises in force-free anti-predation training and is the author of the three books of the Predation Substitute Training series “Hunting Together”\, “Rocket Recall” and “Don’t Eat That”. \nSimone is proud to be an Associate Trainer at the Scotland-based Lothlorien Dog Training Club (AT-LDTC) and a member of The Initiative of Force-Free Dog Training\, the Pet Professional Guild (PPG) and the Pet Dog Trainers of Europe (PDTE). \nFollow Simone’s work on Facebook and Instagram: #predationsubstitutetraining. SUMMARY:Webinar - 7/3/23 - A New Approach to Working With Clients & Harnessing Autonomy and Empowerment for Success - PPG (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:One of the most stated reasons by professional trainers for a failure to perform successful services in pet training is two-fold. I often hear that ” the client was not committed or compliant.” \nLet’s stop this behavior-changing game we find ourselves in and begin to work with clients in a more collaborative model yielding success for all parties! \nIt’s not about control or win-loose\, or compliance. These words make us cringe when discussing behavior change in animals; let’s not apply these old concepts to our clients. \nDo you often feel like you? \n\nAre constantly nagging clients.\nHaving suggestions and ideas pushed back.\nHear “yeah but” all the time.\nFeel your client relationship is confrontational.\nReturn to a client’s home and find no progress has been made in your absence\nFind yourself constantly “splaining” everything\n\nWell\, Did you know that? \n\nClients\, like all humans\, make choices that do not always align with their goals.\nClients may\, at times\, lack self-control.\nClients have no commitment vehicle to help them stay on track.\nClients don’t see or recognize the ambivalence between their stated goal and behavior.\n\nIn this webinar\, Niki will introduce the concept of Motivational Interviewing and Commitment Strategies. \nLearn how these can be used to harness a client’s ambivalence and then use this ambivalence to motivate effective behavior change. She will also discuss various types of commitment strategies that can be used to hold clients accountable for their own words and goals. \nLearn About \n\nInterviewing techniques to bring about change\nWhat to avoid in developing a collaborative professional-client relationship\nHow to guide clients through their own behavior change\nHow to stop “splaining” and empower autonomy in your clients\n\nCEUS Pending PPAB\, KPA\, CCPDT\, IAABC \nPresented by Niki Tudge \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://petprofessionalguild.com/event-5295867

SUMMARY:Webinar - 7/6/23 - Wait for It: Discussing Duration in All Its Forms - FDSA (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:Duration comes in many forms in dog training. Down stays\, calm holds\, or a sustained sit pretty are what we normally think of when adding duration to behaviors. However\, performing motion behaviors such as heeling or leg weaves are duration behaviors too. \nFor some dogs duration comes naturally. However\, for others\, every fraction of a second of duration is fought for over time. Some dogs are content waiting for the next cue\, while others want to jump ahead and do the next behavior as quickly as possible. These dogs need different approaches\, however the concept of duration remains the same: do the thing until I ask for another thing. \nThe other aspect of duration is the emotion and energy level that the dog is in while performing the behavior. Down stays require a different energy level than that of a heads up heel. Both are duration behaviors\, however\, the desired state of mind of our dog is vastly different. Sara will discuss how to create the optimal emotion in your behavior through the strategic use of reinforcement delivery. \nSara will also provide different methods of adding duration to your calm stationary behaviors and stays\, including the Multiple Reward Stay and Reverse Luring. She will also talk about how to create duration in your motion behaviors as well through gradual fading of helper cues and decreasing rate of reinforcement. \nSo sit and stay! You’ll want to settle in for this presentation. \nPresenter: Sara Brueske \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://www.fenzidogsportsacademy.com/index.php/self-study/webinars

Thin slices help build the confidence that comes with repeated success\, a wonderful gift for any dog – and for any handler. \nThin slices are important in humane training\, helping us to work with animals in a way that avoids pressuring them\, respects their individual timetable and capacities\, and builds success. Underlying this approach is deep trust in the dog’s ability to do their best when we make sense to the dog in a way that suits their individual temperament\, when the slice is right. \nLearning Objectives \n\nUnderstanding how the individual dog defines the right slice\nRecognizing when the slice is right\, and when it is not\nHow lumping and fuzzy criteria block success\nWhy repetitions & reinforcement are not the whole picture\n\nCEUs: PPAB 1\, CCPDT 1\, KPA 1\, & PMCT 1 IAABC pending \nAbout the Presenter: \nSuzanne Clothier has been working with animals professionally since 1977. SUMMARY:Webinar - 7/13/23 - Everyday Ethics for Animal Control Officers - NACA/Justice Clearinghouse
DESCRIPTION:Wearing a badge brings a certain amount of power and great deal of responsibility. Animal control and humane officers make many decisions daily that impact people’s rights\, public safety\, animal welfare\, and—most importantly—themselves and their career. Almost all of us want to do the “right” thing in each case. But\, with so many competing interests\, how do we know what the “right” thing is? Is it ‘right’ to allow an animal to remain in a place where it will likely suffer? Is it ‘right’ to bend the rules to stop or prevent animal suffering? Who should own an animal\, and what can they do to/with that animal? And\, what about euthanasia? We will explore some of the real-world dilemmas that officers face regularly and discuss how to make the best decisions possible. \nThis session will cover: \n\nAnimal\, mineral or vegetable: what is a profession and are we one?\nWhat are the most important qualities in an animal control/humane officer?\nWhat influences can move the needle on our moral compass?\nRight vs. wrong; is it really black and white?\nTruth or consequences: When is it okay to lie?\nShould you compromise your principles?\n\nThis webinar has been certified by the National Animal Care & Control Association and is approved for 1 Continuing Education Unit. Please refer to your NACA membership portal for current CEU submission process. Current NACA Members who attend the live presentation or watch the recording will be able to download a jointly issued attendance certificate that includes the National Animal Care & Control Association logo.
