SUMMARY:Webinar - 7/15/20 - Large-Scale Animal Cruelty Seizures: Key Considerations - NACA/Justice Clearinghouse/HSUS
DESCRIPTION:EVENT DETAILS\n\nPreparing for a large-scale animal cruelty seizure provides exceptional challenges and can be daunting for any agency. This webinar will briefly review how to prepare for\, and execute\, one of these cases\, from case-building through prosecution. Specifically\, it will cover how to prepare for a case involving a significant number of animals\, with a focus on engaging key stakeholders and securing critical physical/personnel resources. The presentation will discuss evidence documentation and sentencing considerations\, unique to large-scale cases. \n  \n  \n\n \n  \n  \nThe National Law Enforcement Center on Animal Abuse was established by the National Sheriffs’ Association to provide law enforcement officers information on the realities of animal abuse and to promote their proactive involvement in the enforcement of animal abuse laws in their communities. Through our partners\, the Center will serve as an information clearinghouse and forum for law enforcement on the growing problem of animal abuse and its link to other types of crimes\, including violence against humans. The Center also promotes officer safety in officer-dog encounters through continuing education and training. \n  \n  \n \n  \nThe National Animal Care & Control Association (NACA) was formed in 1978 for the express purpose of assisting its members to perform their duties in a professional manner. We believe only carefully selected and properly trained animal control personnel can correct community problems resulting from irresponsible animal ownership. NACA’s purpose is to preserve the Human/Animal Bond by insisting on responsible animal ownership. \n  \n  \n  \n \nFounded in 1954\, the Humane Society of the United States and its affiliates around the globe fight the big fights to end suffering for all animals. Together with millions of supporters\, the HSUS takes on puppy mills\, factory farms\, trophy hunts\, animal testing and other cruel industries\, and together with its affiliates\, rescues and provides direct care for over 100\,000 animals every year. The HSUS works on reforming corporate policy\, improving and enforcing laws and elevating public awareness on animal issues. \n\n  \n  \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://justiceclearinghouse.com/webinar/large-scale-animal-cruelty-seizures-key-considerations/

The survey results showed that most students felt that their school’s reaction to COVID-19 was reasonable\, and nearly 90% of the class of 2020 had signed or verbally agreed to employment. However\, mental wellbeing of students has declined\, and nearly two-thirds of the class of 2021 had externship experiences postponed or canceled. SUMMARY:Webinar - 7/9/20 - Suzanne Clother - Understanding the Stimulus Gradient: Distance\, Duration\, & Intensity - FDSA - Webinar Fee Applies
DESCRIPTION:Suzanne Clother – Understanding the Stimulus Gradient: Distance\, Duration\, & Intensity\nDate: Thursday\, July 9\, 2020\nTime: 3pm Pacific Time (Click here for time at FDSA (Pacific Time).\nFee: $19.95 – Registration required PRIOR to scheduled presentation time. \nFor the positive reinforcement trainer\, a constant goal in any training session is to avoid pushing the dog over the threshold into being overwhelmed\, frightened\, reactive or activated. But how much is too much? or not enough? When do you move on the next step? What to do if you go too far? Understanding the stimulus gradient provides the answers.\nThe stimulus gradient is the trainer’s “mixing board.” Every training situation incorporates these three ingredients in varying proportions. Skillful training requires an understanding of how to adjust the individual ingredients\, as well as knowing how distance\, duration and intensity interact. \nThe stimulus gradient is key to: \n\nCreating appropriate “thin slices”\nIdentifying clear criteria for progressions\nEffectively using distractions\nSuccessful counter-conditioning\nHelping reactive dogs\nTroubleshooting training issues\n\nThis webinar focuses on practical application of the stimulus gradient\, including: \n\nUsing distance\nNatural blocks & openings for duration control\nControlling intensity\n\nWhether your goals are high level performance or helping a first time pet owner\, knowing how to play the trainer’s mixing board will take your training to a new level. \n* Click here to register **

SUMMARY:Webinar - 7/9/20 - Supporting Your Community with a Pet Safety Net - CalAnimals - for CalAnimals Members
DESCRIPTION:Speakers:  Darlene Blackman\, Director of Community Engagement\, Marin Humane\, and Katilyn Navarro\, Pet Retention Coordinator\, Ventura County Animal Services \nOne of the many ways sheltering services are changing is responding to the needs of pets living in the community. Pet Safety Net programs work to keep pets in their homes by providing support for their care. If an animal has to be surrendered to a shelter because the family cannot provide the necessary care\, it is a tragedy for all. The animal loses its family\, the family loses their beloved pet and the shelter has to spend funds on an animal that has a home. We will look at the programs offered at Marin Humane and Ventura County Animal Services that assist owners in keeping their pets and preventing surrenders. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://www.calanimals.org/on

SUMMARY:Webinar - 7/9/20 - Processing Evidence in Animal Crime Cases - NACA/Justice Clearinghouse
DESCRIPTION:Animal cruelty crimes generate unique and sensitive types of evidence. Some types of evidence\, such as ammonia levels are transitory and require situation appropriate collection. Marks of animal struggling or suffering may be subtle but important to detect. Animals themselves may be evidence\, whether living or deceased and they themselves present challenges at the crime scene and afterwards. This presentation will cover evidence recognition\, documentation\, preservation\, and collection in a variety of types of animal cruelty crimes. \n  \n \nThe National Animal Care & Control Association (NACA) was formed in 1978 for the express purpose of assisting its members to perform their duties in a professional manner. We believe only carefully selected and properly trained animal control personnel can correct community problems resulting from irresponsible animal ownership. NACA’s purpose is to preserve the Human/Animal Bond by insisting on responsible animal ownership. \n \nThe National Law Enforcement Center on Animal Abuse was established by the National Sheriffs’ Association to provide law enforcement officers information on the realities of animal abuse and to promote their proactive involvement in the enforcement of animal abuse laws in their communities. Through our partners\, the Center will serve as an information clearinghouse and forum for law enforcement on the growing problem of animal abuse and its link to other types of crimes\, including violence against humans. The Center also promotes officer safety in officer-dog encounters through continuing education and training. \n \n\n\nA veterinarian experienced in animal welfare\, emergency veterinary medicine and animal cruelty investigations\, Dr. Smith-Blackmore has a special interest in working K9 safety as well as helping law enforcement and animal control officers feel confident in investigating allegations of animal cruelty. She is a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police forensic science committee; the president of a veterinary forensics consulting group; an adjunct professor at the Tufts University Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine and a Fellow at the Center for Animals and Public Policy in North Grafton\, Massachusetts. \n \n\n\nJessica Rock is an Assistant District Attorney with the Towaliga Judicial Circuit and the Georgia Statewide Animal Crimes Prosecutor and Trainer\, only the 3rd of this kind in the nation. She provides statewide animal crime (animal cruelty and dogfighting) case assistance for law enforcement and prosecutors.  She also provides statewide and national training to law enforcement\, animal control officers\, prosecutors\, judges and veterinarians on a variety of topics including animal abuse cases from the crime scene to the courtroom\, dogfighting investigations and prosecutions and the link between animal abuse\, interpersonal violence\, and other collateral crimes. \nFormer Deputy Chief of the Special Victims Unit for DeKalb County\, Jessica graduated with Honors from the University of Florida with a Bachelor of Arts in Criminology. Jessica received her Juris Doctor (J.D.) from Emory University School of Law in 2003. After clerking for a superior court judge and the former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Georgia\, in 2004\, she became Georgia’s first dedicated animal cruelty prosecutor\, creating Georgia’s first animal cruelty task force with law enforcement. For over a decade\, Jessica successfully prosecuted thousands of special victims cases involving homicide\, RICO\, gangs\, domestic violence\, elder abuse\, child victim cases\, animal cruelty\, and dogfighting. Training judges\, prosecutors\, law enforcement officers\, animal control officers\, and veterinarians for over 16 years\, she continues teaching nationally and throughout Georgia. \nIn addition to her speaking engagements\, she also works diligently drafting laws related to animals in Georgia on both the state and local levels. She is the past Chair of the Animal Law Section of the State Bar of Georgia and on the executive board of the National Coalition on Violence Against Animals. She is also an adjunct professor at the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine\, Veterinary Forensic Sciences Program. \n\nWEBSITE LINK:  https://justiceclearinghouse.com/webinar/processing-evidence-in-animal-crime-cases/
