SUMMARY:Webinar - 7/22/20 - How to Build a Puppy: Early Development 0-63 Days - Suzanne Clothier - Pet Professional Guild (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:The period from 8 to 16 weeks is often considered “early puppyhood.” In fact\, the majority of the foundation for a dog’s life is set in the first 63 days. Fuller & Scott noted that the transformation from neonate to 9 weeks old was so profound and complex that it was even more amazing that the changes from tadpole to frog. \nThis webinar focuses on the needs of developing pup\, and using appropriate stimulation to build resilience\, confidence and normal behavior. Puppies who lack the necessary input can – and often do – develop behavior issues that will not be “fixed” through socialization and training. \nDrawn from Suzanne Clothier’s Enriched Puppy Protocol\, a program that has been used to help raise more than 10\,000 guide and service dog puppies as well as her 10 generations of German Shepherds\, this webinar includes: \n·      Development stages \n·      Sensitive vs Critical periods \n·      Sensory development \n·      Fear period \n·      Physical\, mental and social changes \nSadly\, not all puppies receive the ideal upbringing. Recognizing how a poor start can create lifelong deficits\, we can also help offset and fill in the gaps to help each puppy become their best. \nThis webinar is for trainers interested in knowing how to build a healthy\, happy puppy\, for those who work with litters through rescues and shelters\, and anyone who wants to understand more completely how 63 days set the foundation for life. \n\nAbout The Presenter \n \nSuzanne Clothier \n\n\nSuzanne Clothier has been working with animals professionally since 1977. Currently based in St. Johnsville\, New York\, she is well respected internationally for her holistic Relationship Centered Training™ approach to dogs and the people that love them. Her background includes training\, instruction\, behavior modification\, kennel management\, temperament assessment\, physical assessment and conditioning\, early puppy development\, class curriculum development\, obedience\, agility\, Search and Rescue\, conformation\, breeding and more. Since 1991\, she has taught workshops and seminars on a broad range of topics throughout the United States and internationally for a wide variety of groups from training clubs to international conferences in 11 countries. An award-winning author of multiple books and DVDs\, her book\, Bones Would Rain from the Sky: Deepening Our Relationships With Dogs (2002) has received wide spread praise from every corner of the dog world\, including twice being included in the Wall Street Journal’s list of Top 5 Dog Books. She has served on the American Humane Association’s Task Force for Humane Training\, the AKC Agility Advisory board\, and is currently a consultant for Frankie & Andy’s Place\, a senior dog sanctuary in Georgia. These tools have been used by guide and service dog organizations\, therapy dog groups\, AAIA organizations\, shelters and rescue groups\, and trainers. In her work as a consultant to guide dog schools\, her Enriched Puppy Protocol™ served as the structure for the updating of their puppy raising programs. Since 2007\, more than 10\,000 puppies have been raised in programs built around The Enriched Puppy Protocol™. Meanwhile\, with fellow trainer Cindy Knowlton\, she developed CCC: Connection\, Cooperation & Control™\, a puzzle-based program that builds joyful relationships between handlers and dogs. DESCRIPTION:This Tuesday: Diving back into social and racial justice for California animal shelters\n\nYou are invited to join our two-part discussion session happening this Tuesday\, July 14th.\n\nThe sheltermedicine.com newsletter: your portal to better sheltering.\n\n\n\nSave the Date: DEI and your shelter.\n\nTwo-part DEI discussion sessions this Tuesday (7/14) and next Tuesday (7/21).\n\n\nHi All\,\n\nWe just got off the phone from the group planning session for our upcoming CASCAR calls and we’re really looking forward to our time together on Tuesday! Jose Ocano and Jyothi Robertson will be joining us again for a two-parter this Tuesday\, July 14th\, and the following Tuesday\, July 21st\, to dive deeper into applying a racial and social justice lens both within our organizations and to the work that we do.\n\nWe will move through definitions and establishing cultural foundations into practical tactics with plenty of room for discussion. As always\, our hope is to create a respectful and friendly context for exploration and sharing of questions\, ideas and experiences.\n\nJust shedding lots and lots of light on this discussion and refusing to let it fade into the background as other pressing issues emerge (and surge☹️)\, is really helpful. At least\, that’s our sincere hope.\n\n\n\nCheck the CA shelters page for links to this and previous CASCAR calls.\n\nWe would love for this to be inclusive of interested staff at every level so please feel free to share with your team. Coming up\, we can discuss changing the time of these calls to better accommodate schedules now that more people are back to work onsite\, We realize 10am isn’t the easiest for kennel staff.\n\nAs always\, if you have questions or suggestions for this discussion or future CASCAR topics\, email us at CASCAR@sheltermedicine.com <mailto:CASCAR@sheltermedicine.com>.\nRemember\, if you volunteer to lead a section of a call\, you get a CASCAR mug of your own!\n\n\nDr. Kate Hurley and the KSMP Team

SUMMARY:Webinar - 7/20/20 - The Future of Volunteers in Sheltering -
DESCRIPTION:Volunteers and those who lead them are critical to the lifesaving work of animal shelters nationwide. The last few months have drastically changed how most organizations engage volunteers. As the Covid-19 pandemic spread across the country\, animal shelters quickly shifted operations\, moving animals into foster and—in most cases—asking the majority of volunteers to stay home. Many areas are now seeing increasing coronavirus infection rates as states struggle to move responsibly through various stages of re-opening. \nWhat does all this mean for the future of volunteers in sheltering? What role do volunteers play in ensuring our shelters are resilient and sustainable during these challenging times? How can volunteers help to ensure we re-emerge stronger than ever post Covid-19? Despite the difficulties ahead\, there is significant opportunity to harness volunteer energy to strengthen shelters in meeting their lifesaving missions and better serve the animals and people in our communities. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe invite leaders of volunteers\, shelter managers\, executive directors and others to join us for a series of robust discussions and breakout groups\, to explore questions such as: \n\nHow is volunteer engagement evolving and changing in this new COVID world?\nWhat challenges are we facing and how might we overcome them?\nWhat opportunities might we seize upon to engage volunteers in new strategic ways to reach our goals?\nHow do we ensure our shelters’ volunteer efforts are resilient and sustainable to meet the needs of the animals in our care and the communities we serve long into the future?\n\nMonday\, July 20\, 2020\n2:00pm – 4:00pm ET\, 11:00am – 12:00pm PT \nRegister for the Zoom session: \n\n\n\n\n\nJoin the Zoom meeting\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFacilitators:\nBetsy McFarland\nBetsy is a collaborator and bridge-builder with a proven track record of navigating diverse viewpoints\, often in emotionally charged situations. SUMMARY:Weekly Call - Monday Mornings - Connect With Other Animal Shelter Professionals - Maddie's Fund
DESCRIPTION:Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic\, animal shelter workers\, volunteers and animal welfare leaders from across the country have been meeting every Monday morning at 7am PT/10am ET to discuss protocols\, ideas\, obstacles they’re facing and more.   \nLed by Kristen Hassen-Auerbach\, Director of Pima Animal Care in Tucson\, AZ\, these calls have provided an opportunity for people to connect that otherwise may not have even met.    \n“The purpose of these calls is simple – maintain connection among shelter professionals\, provide support and comradery\, and share science-based news and information along with emerging best practices in animal welfare\,” Hassen-Auerbach says. “These calls are always lively and interesting and we’re not afraid to debate and share different perspectives from the attendees. You can take center stage and share your thoughts and ideas in front of several hundred of your colleagues or quietly drink your morning coffee and listen in.”  \nFor many\, these calls have been an invaluable resource. “When the subject of DEI (Diversity\, Equity and Inclusion) came to the front of all of our minds\, the calls adapted and we had a space to again learn from one another\,” said Emily Klehm from South Suburban Humane Society in Chicago Heights\, IL. “The calls have been my go-to source for grant information\, statistics and trends. I’ve also been able to identify and connect to colleagues working on the same issues in similar communities.”  \nDr. Ellen Jefferson\, Executive Director at Austin Pets Alive! adds\, “We hear from people in the industry who have important information related to COVID\, new programming and research.  This is information you can’t possibly get in your day to day work at your local shelter.”  \nIf you’re a shelter professional\, dedicated volunteer or run a rescue organization\, we want you to join us! Bookmark this link and we will see you on Monday! \nNote: The calls are recorded so if you can’t make it\, you can listen in later. If you haven’t already\, join the Facebook group to access the link to recorded calls and to connect with others on there.
