SUMMARY:Webinar - 7/9/20 - Supporting Your Community with a Pet Safety Net - CalAnimals - for CalAnimals Members
DESCRIPTION:Speakers:  Darlene Blackman\, Director of Community Engagement\, Marin Humane\, and Katilyn Navarro\, Pet Retention Coordinator\, Ventura County Animal Services \nOne of the many ways sheltering services are changing is responding to the needs of pets living in the community. Pet Safety Net programs work to keep pets in their homes by providing support for their care. If an animal has to be surrendered to a shelter because the family cannot provide the necessary care\, it is a tragedy for all. The animal loses its family\, the family loses their beloved pet and the shelter has to spend funds on an animal that has a home. We will look at the programs offered at Marin Humane and Ventura County Animal Services that assist owners in keeping their pets and preventing surrenders. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://www.calanimals.org/on

SUMMARY:Webinar - 7/9/20 - Processing Evidence in Animal Crime Cases - NACA/Justice Clearinghouse
DESCRIPTION:Animal cruelty crimes generate unique and sensitive types of evidence. Some types of evidence\, such as ammonia levels are transitory and require situation appropriate collection. Marks of animal struggling or suffering may be subtle but important to detect. Animals themselves may be evidence\, whether living or deceased and they themselves present challenges at the crime scene and afterwards. This presentation will cover evidence recognition\, documentation\, preservation\, and collection in a variety of types of animal cruelty crimes. \n  \n \nThe National Animal Care & Control Association (NACA) was formed in 1978 for the express purpose of assisting its members to perform their duties in a professional manner. We believe only carefully selected and properly trained animal control personnel can correct community problems resulting from irresponsible animal ownership. NACA’s purpose is to preserve the Human/Animal Bond by insisting on responsible animal ownership. \n \nThe National Law Enforcement Center on Animal Abuse was established by the National Sheriffs’ Association to provide law enforcement officers information on the realities of animal abuse and to promote their proactive involvement in the enforcement of animal abuse laws in their communities. Through our partners\, the Center will serve as an information clearinghouse and forum for law enforcement on the growing problem of animal abuse and its link to other types of crimes\, including violence against humans. The Center also promotes officer safety in officer-dog encounters through continuing education and training. \n \n\n\nA veterinarian experienced in animal welfare\, emergency veterinary medicine and animal cruelty investigations\, Dr. Smith-Blackmore has a special interest in working K9 safety as well as helping law enforcement and animal control officers feel confident in investigating allegations of animal cruelty. She is a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police forensic science committee; the president of a veterinary forensics consulting group; an adjunct professor at the Tufts University Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine and a Fellow at the Center for Animals and Public Policy in North Grafton\, Massachusetts. \n \n\n\nJessica Rock is an Assistant District Attorney with the Towaliga Judicial Circuit and the Georgia Statewide Animal Crimes Prosecutor and Trainer\, only the 3rd of this kind in the nation. She provides statewide animal crime (animal cruelty and dogfighting) case assistance for law enforcement and prosecutors.  She also provides statewide and national training to law enforcement\, animal control officers\, prosecutors\, judges and veterinarians on a variety of topics including animal abuse cases from the crime scene to the courtroom\, dogfighting investigations and prosecutions and the link between animal abuse\, interpersonal violence\, and other collateral crimes. \nFormer Deputy Chief of the Special Victims Unit for DeKalb County\, Jessica graduated with Honors from the University of Florida with a Bachelor of Arts in Criminology. Jessica received her Juris Doctor (J.D.) from Emory University School of Law in 2003. After clerking for a superior court judge and the former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Georgia\, in 2004\, she became Georgia’s first dedicated animal cruelty prosecutor\, creating Georgia’s first animal cruelty task force with law enforcement. For over a decade\, Jessica successfully prosecuted thousands of special victims cases involving homicide\, RICO\, gangs\, domestic violence\, elder abuse\, child victim cases\, animal cruelty\, and dogfighting. Training judges\, prosecutors\, law enforcement officers\, animal control officers\, and veterinarians for over 16 years\, she continues teaching nationally and throughout Georgia. \nIn addition to her speaking engagements\, she also works diligently drafting laws related to animals in Georgia on both the state and local levels. She is the past Chair of the Animal Law Section of the State Bar of Georgia and on the executive board of the National Coalition on Violence Against Animals. She is also an adjunct professor at the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine\, Veterinary Forensic Sciences Program. \n\nWEBSITE LINK:  https://justiceclearinghouse.com/webinar/processing-evidence-in-animal-crime-cases/

SUMMARY:Online Course - Starts 7/8/20 - Introduction to Learning - in Animals - Smart Dog Training and Behavior (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:Course description\nEverything animals do is affected by learning.  This includes unhealthy or maladaptive behavior such as aggression and anxiety as well as simple\, everyday behavior such as interactions with family members\, strangers\, and other dogs.  In addition\, learning is affected by everything we do and experience.  Things like trauma and success\, as well as feeling excited or scared after a particular experience\, all affect how animals learn. \nAs dog trainers\, we need to have a very strong foundation in learning theory if we want to effectively establish new behaviors and modify old ones. This class is an excellent way to establish that knowledge. \nIntroduction to Learning covers the biology of learning\, instrumental conditioning\, classical conditioning\, the role of emotion in learning as well as the application and integration of these topics.  Throughout the class\, students will have multiple opportunities to use in-class activities to further their understanding of the material and to receive feedback regarding their progress in the course. I also offer an advanced learning class for students that are already comfortable with the basics\, or who are interested in going further after completing the introductory course. That course will be scheduled later in 2020 and will be announced via my mailing list. \nCourse Objectives\nUpon completion of this course\, students should be able to: \n\nDefine learning and explain how it influences behavior\nExplain how learning is influenced by biological factors such as genetics and natural selection\nDiscuss the relationship between physiology and behavior\nDefine\, recognize\, and apply instrumental conditioning concepts including:\n\n\n\nInstrumental conditioning\nAntecedent\, behavior\, consequence\nNegative and positive punishment and reinforcement\nFactors that influence instrumental learning\n\n\n\n\nExplain the different methods of producing behaviors in dogs (e.g. shaping\, chaining\, luring)\nDefine\, recognize\, and apply classical conditioning concepts including:\n\n\n\nClassical conditioning\nConditioned and unconditioned stimuli and responses\n\n\n\n\nDefine emotion and discuss how it influences behavior\nAssess different methods of addressing fear in dogs and the proper application of each\nMake predictions about how an individual might learn under particular conditions and how that learning will affect behavior.\nApply knowledge of learning to working with dogs\nBe able to analyze\, integrate and apply new information to fit into current framework of knowledge. If it doesn’t fit into current framework\, be able to pursue novel paths of thinking.\n\nApproach\nI believe that the most effective learning occurs when students are not only provided with the facts\, but also provided ample opportunity to use that information in concrete ways\, engage in challenging activities\, interact with others and receive frequent feedback on their progress. \nTherefore\, this course will be taught using an approach that encourages collaboration and active learning.  While there will be time spent lecturing\, time in class will be also be spent working on interactive activities and completing brief assignments. \nI began my teaching career by teaching at a university and I hold students in my online courses to the same standards. I have high expectations for engagement and quality of work. However\, I also strongly feel that if I am going to set a high bar\, that I need to step up and make sure my students can reach it. This means that I hold myself to a very high standard as well and I love it when students reach out if they are struggling with the material in any way. I am happy to help. If you haven’t taken a college course before\, but are willing to put in the work and reach out for help if needed\, then you should do well in this course. \nSchedule\nThe course starts on Wednesday\, July 8th at 6 pm EST. It is a 6-week course. We will have class on the following days: July 8th\, July 15th\, July 22nd\, July 29th\, August 5th\, and August 12th. Class runs for about an hour. Each lecture will be conducted live and will include interactive discussion. There will be at least one in-class assignment each week as well. In addition to the in-class assignments\, there will be two quizzes that will need to be completed outside of class – one on Week 2 and one on week 4. \nIf you are interested in this course\, but cannot attend live at the currently scheduled time\, please e-mail info@smartdogtrainingandbehavior.com with your preferred times. If I get enough requests for other time slots\, I will open additional sections.  \nClass preview\nNot sure? Check out our class preview! The preview contains a sample lecture\, a video message from Dr. Spaulding\, the syllabus and a quiz to test your knowledge! \nNote: the system requires you to create an account to view the preview\, but you will not need to enter your credit card information. \nCEUs\nCCPDT: 9 CEUs for behavior consultants \nIAABC: 8.25 CEUs \nCEUs will require completion of work in class as well as the completion of two quizzes. Quizzes must be passed with an 80% or higher and 80% or more of all in-class work must be submitted in order to earn CEUs. If you receive less than 80% on the quiz you may retake the quiz once\, after contacting the instructor for clarification on the missed questions. Refunds will not be granted if you are unable to attend class and therefore unable to complete the required work. Excused absences will be granted in case of emergencies and illness (with proper documentation). \nRegister\nThe cost for the course is $240. \nClick here to register. Registration will close on Tuesday\, July 7th at 12 pm EST. \nWEBSITE LINK:  http://smartdogtrainingandbehavior.com/introduction-to-learning/

SUMMARY:Online Meeting - CASCAR - 7/7/20 - California Animal Shelters - UC Davis Koret Shelter Medicine Program
DESCRIPTION:Given the craziness that can afflict animal shelters around the July 4th weekend we were thinking of cancelling next Tuesday’s CASCAR call. However\, there were lots of questions after the webinar we did for Cal Animals during the usual CASCAR slot this week and we didn’t get to all of them\, so we figured we could use the time to answer those if there are any lingering. And we are working on a follow up\, more tactical session on racial and social justice in California animal sheltering/community animal management\, hopefully to really dig into policies and practices that will result in meaningful shifts. If you have questions and ideas to inform planning that would be welcome. Or just in general if you want to drop in and say hi – the truth is we just like to see you all! \nSo\, low key and don’t worry if you can’t make it this week\, but we’ll be hanging out at the usual spot at 10 a.m. on Tuesday July 7th: https://zoom.us/meeting/register/tJQtdO-srDItyMz7xy-ZsncbcFa6s8kKZg. \nAnd as always\, if you have questions or suggestions for future CASCAR call topics\, email us at CASCAR@sheltermedicine.com. \nHope your fourth of July weekend is not too hectic and all the pets and people stay safe! \nKate \nKate F. SUMMARY:Webinar - 7/1/20 - Communicating in a Divided America - The AAWA
DESCRIPTION:As part of our Diversity\, Equity\, and Inclusion Commitment To Action\, The Association will continue offering resources and learning opportunities designed to further the eradication of systemic discrimination and racism in animal welfare. \nIt’s no secret that our nation is deeply divided along political and social lines\, especially right now. These divisions make it increasingly difficult for animal welfare organizations to develop messages that appeal to people on both sides of the divide. \nJoin us for a free webinar that will equip your organization with the tools your staff\, volunteers\, and board need to listen thoughtfully and communicate effectively with supporters who span the political and social spectrum. Participants will learn how to: \n\nIdentify and speak to the shared values of internal and external audiences\, including potential supporters\, regardless of their political or social ideology\nAssess your existing communications to find language and imagery that turns off those on either side of the ideological divide\nEliminate jargon and develop direct\, accessible communications that connect with shared values\nReach key audiences who are either unaware of or turned off by your existing messaging\n\nThis webinar has been pre-approved for 1 Certified Animal Welfare Administrator continuing education credit. \nThis webinar:\n\nWill be recorded and available on-demand 24/7\nIs approved for 1 CAWA CE and for 1 CE  by the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) for Texas Animal Control Officers\nIs free for Association members and non-members—bring your staff! (Non-members will need to create a free “Learning Non-Member” account in order to register; only registrants can receive a certificate of completion)\n\n\n\nPeter Panepento\nPhilanthropic Practice Leader\, Turn Two Communications\nPeter Panepento founded Turn Two Communications\, a full-service communications and PR firm that specializes in working with nonprofits and foundations. SUMMARY:Webinar - 6/30/20 - Is Mission Creep Killing Your Agency? - NACA - Justice Clearinghouse
DESCRIPTION:Whether you are part of a non-profit or municipal agency\, Animal Welfare Organizations have to operate within a budget.  Organizations find themselves trying to meet the needs of citizens\, both two and four-legged. However\, animal welfare organizations find themselves at a crossroads between responding to requests for service and adhering to the mission of the organization. In the never-ending struggle to please everyone\, is your organization’s mission taking a backseat to placating the next complaint? In this session\, we will explore some of the common pitfalls organizations fall into that compete with their mission. \n  \n  \n\n \n  \nThe National Animal Care & Control Association (NACA) was formed in 1978 for the express purpose of assisting its members to perform their duties in a professional manner. We believe only carefully selected and properly trained animal control personnel can correct community problems resulting from irresponsible animal ownership. NACA’s purpose is to preserve the Human/Animal Bond by insisting on responsible animal ownership. \n  \n  \n\n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPresenters:\n\n\n\nBased out of Daytona Beach\, Florida\, Adam Leath is the Director of Volusia County Animal Services. There he investigates and responds to situations involving animal victims of natural disasters and animal cruelty cases. Leath was\, formerly\, the Southeast Regional Director of the Field Investigations and Response Team at the ASPCA.  There he aided jurisdictions at the local\, state\, and federal levels investigating crimes against animals. While in that position\, Leath led one of the largest operations in ASPCA history with the seizure of over 1\,000 animals in August of 2016. Leath also successfully investigated one of the largest cockfighting cases in Florida history\, resulting in the seizure of more than 650 birds and numerous arrests. Leath has responded to multiple dogfighting operations throughout his time at the ASPCA\, including the second largest dog fighting bust in U.S. history in 2013\, resulting in the seizure of more than 400 dogs. \nLeath holds a bachelor’s degree in animal science from the University of Tennessee and a Graduate Certificate in Veterinary Forensic Science from the University of Florida. He is the immediate past president of the International Veterinary Forensic Sciences Association and is a Certified National Animal Cruelty Investigator through the University of Missouri. He has also been certified in Equine Cruelty Investigation through the University of Colorado. Leath has been certified as an expert witness in animal fighting and animal cruelty in the state of Florida and in New York. \nWebsite:  https://justiceclearinghouse.com/webinar/is-mission-creep-killing-your-agency/
