SUMMARY:Town Hall - 1/27/22 - Community-Supported Sheltering: Aligning all stakeholders in the welfare of animals in your community - Best Friends
DESCRIPTION:Community-supported sheltering is not just “the latest trend;” it’s a natural progression for shelters and communities that want to maximize lifesaving. Where once our industry frequently viewed the public with suspicion\, today we are reaching outside the walls of our facilities to engage the community as an important partner in our lifesaving work. During this town hall\, Best Friends staff will address confusion around the community-supported sheltering movement and discuss the powerful intersection when the roles of the shelter\, field services\, government and the public come together to support the welfare of animals in a community. \nFollowing the presentation\, there will be a Q&A. Submit your questions ahead of time during registration or live during the event using the chat box. If you are interested in this event but unable to attend live\, you can register and you will receive the recording when it’s available. \nModerator: Brent Toellner – Senior Director\, National Programs\, Best Friends Animal Society \nPanelists: \n\nSue Cosby – Senior Director of Lifesaving Centers\, Best Friends Animal Society\nLaura Donahue – Director\, Legislation and Advocacy\, Best Friends Animal Society\nScott Giacoppo – Director\, National Shelter Support\, Best Friends Animal Society\n\nWEBSITE LINK:  https://network.bestfriends.org/proven-strategies/best-friends-town-halls

SUMMARY:Webinar - 2/1/22 - A Deeper Dive into Renesting and Reuniting Birds (Part 2) - NACA/Justice Clearinghouse
DESCRIPTION:Join us for part two of our Reuniting and Renesting Orphaned Wildlife webinar\, as we take a deeper dive into reuniting and renesting birds. Like squirrels\, raccoons\, and other mammals\, healthy young birds can become accidently separated from their parents for any number of reasons\, causing animal care and control\, law enforcement\, and wildlife rehabilitation centers to be inundated with calls about potentially orphaned birds in the spring and summer. In this webinar\, you’ll learn how to better evaluate and respond to these calls and just as importantly\, learn what not to do. We’ll discuss how long young birds are dependent on parents\, different nest types and substitutes\, and species behavior related to breeding and development. Examples of reuniting methods for passerines will be presented to demonstrate the basic techniques of reuniting\, along with brief discussions of strategies for reuniting raptors and waterfowl. \nPresenter \nJohn Griffin has 20+ years of field experience ranging from resolving conflict issues with raccoons to protecting great apes. As Senior Director of Urban Wildlife Programs for the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS)\, John oversees field service and policy programs that resolve conflicts with wildlife.   John has provided trainings and consultation for animal care and control\, municipal agencies and state agencies. He has led workshops at national\, state and regional conferences\, and has been a speaker at academic and international conferences. John has also worked extensively with the professional wildlife rehabilitation community as well as to reform the commercial wildlife control industry and serves on advisory boards and working groups with those focuses. John is published on a number of topics and was recently a National Geographic Expedition team member exploring raccoon behavior in urban areas. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://www.justiceclearinghouse.com/webinar/a-deeper-dive-into-renesting-and-reuniting-birds-part-2/

Having a strong understanding in the science of instrumental learning will greatly improve your ability to change behavior effectively and humanely. This course covers the basics of instrumental learning\, the side effects and alternatives to punishment\, the latest research on training methods and their impact on behavior and the biology of learning. \nInstructed by Dr. Kristina Spaulding \nCEUs: PPAB 6\, IAABC (pending)\, KPA (pending)\, CCPDT (pending) \nWho Is This Workshop For? \nThis course is for anybody interested in the training of dogs. Beginners\, or those wanting an in-depth review of instrumental learning\, would benefit from taking the entire course. If you already have a strong understanding of the four quadrants and the side effects of punishment\, sessions 3 and 4 still have something to offer! Session 3 covers the latest research on training methods\, including the effectiveness of clicker training and “effort-based training”. Session 4 discusses evolution\, genetics and physiology in relation to learning and behavior. \nRemote Support via Facebook Group \nAttendees who purchased the package will be invited into the Facebook group 7 days prior to the start of the workshop. \nWorking Spots (Strictly Limited to 15 spots ONLY!) – After each webinar Dr. Kristina Spaulding will post information regarding the key skills you will need to practice and master. For example\, why did you use luring to teach behavior Y and capturing to train behavior Z? \nIdentify the type of instrumental conditioning \nAfter watching an assigned video identify: \n– The type of learning going on – positive or negative reinforcement or punishment?\n– The antecedent\, behavior\, and consequence\n– Which animal you are focusing on. (You can do both if you want\, just make sure you’re clear about who you’re talking about because it could change the answer!) \nSession 2 – All About Punishment\nDate: February 9\, 2022 \n– Punishment intro\n– Effective punishment\n– Does punishment work?\n– Side effects\n– Alternatives to punishment \nHomework Working Spots \nProvide a video of you using an alternative to punishment to decrease a behavior \nSession 3 – Training methods\nDate: February 14\, 2022 \n– Important factors\n– Positive reinforcement vs. aversives in dogs\n– Clicker training/Do As I Do\n– Effort-based training \nHomework Working Spots \nVideo of clicker training vs. training with no marker – report your observations – OR – video of you engaging in effort-based training with an animal of your choice \nSession 4 – The Biology of Learning\nDate: February 16\, 2022 \n– Natural selection/evolution\n– Genetics and behavior\n– G x E\n– Epigenetics\n– Physiology and behavior\n– Neurobiology \nHomework Working Spots \nClient communication – what key points do clients need to know about the biology of learning? How would you communicate this clearly and concisely? (200 words or less) \nSpread Your Event Payments Over Several Months? \nIf you would like to split your event cost into three payments then please register for the event\, do not pay the invoice you receive by email.
