Brave New Dog is my playground where I offer online and in-person events for dogs and people. \nPlay is my favorite approach to teaching and learning. I’m especially interested in play as a state of mind\, rather than an activity. SUMMARY:Webinar - 6/6/23 - Considerations for the City Dog: Placing and Helping Dogs in Densely Populated Areas - PPG (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:In nearly every matchmaking quiz about finding the perfect dog\, there are considerations for a pet’s energy level\, size\, and sometimes there will be mention of if the dog will be ok in an apartment – but very rarely are the environmental impacts of a city mentioned. \nNoise from garbage trucks backing up and crashing cans to the sidewalk\, straight lines from hallways and sidewalks\, and elevators are just a few of the daily obstacles our dogs have to cope with when they move into densely populated areas. \nThe way cities are built for people is in direct conflict with how most of our dogs comfortably navigate the world\, and with more people bringing companions into their condos and high rises\, we have to look at how to best match for the environment\, too. \nPresenter Melissa McCue-McGrath will walk attendees through what makes living in a city harder on our dogs\, how to look for city-smart pups who will cope better in these busy environments\, and you’ll never look at sidewalks the same way again. This presentation is for those who are presently working in cities or will likely take on clients in densely populated areas; for rescuers and breeders looking for ways to help place dogs appropriately\, and for those curious as to how the environment impacts our dogs in a very real way. \nCEUs: PPAB 1\, CCPDT 1\, KPA 1\, PMCT 1\, & IAABC pending \nAbout Your Presenter\nMelissa McCue-McGrath\, CPDT-KA has spent most of the last 20 years focusing on the environmental impact on pet dogs and their families in densely populated areas. She wrote the book Considerations for the City Dog in 2015 to help address some common training and behavior issues in cities. \nAs part of her work\, she has been invited to present at Tufts University\, The Broad Institute/MIT\, the New England Federation of Humane Societies\, and the Boston Museum of Science during their DOGS: A Science Tail! exhibition in 2020. Melissa has been the co-training director of the New England Dog Training Club (the oldest AKC obedience club in the US) since 2012 and is currently teaching at the Animal Welfare Society in Kennebunk\, Maine. Her side project\, the BewilderBeasts podcast\, focuses on stories on the infinite ways in which animals intersect with human conventions. The podcast has a steady worldwide audience and frequently breaks the top 50 in science/nature podcast rankings. \nMelissa\, her husband\, and their daughter moved from busy Boston to a quiet piece of land in Maine in 2022. Joining them in tick-country include their aptly named dog\, Captain Love\, two ancient cats who will live forever\, and the most loved flock of chickens on the planet. SUMMARY:Webinar - 6/6/23 - From Intake to Outcomes: Managing Summer Space Crises with Animal Case Management - HASS

SUMMARY:Webinar - 6/8/23 - Customer Service: It’s not About Please and Thank You (You should already know how to do that.) - CalAnimals
DESCRIPTION:Customer Service training in Animal Welfare has often been an afterthought. Seldom do we see curriculum on this topic at most conferences and when we do\, it’s nothing new. We all assume everyone knows how to be nice\, but it’s not about being nice\, it’s about being effective in our communication with one another\, volunteers\, customers and anyone else we come into contact with through the course of our work. It’s about legitimizing the feelings of others\, finding words that impact the psyche and leave the other person feeling cared for\, even when our answer might be no. This session will inspire attendees to really evaluate the training given to all staff/volunteers that interact with others (that would be everyone). Often we presume customer service is something our parents should have taught us\, but that is not always the case. This session will be unique in that we will walk through conversations that we have routinely\, but often fall short in doing so. This session is intended to provoke conversation\, thoughts and action. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_1ZmyKWKgSFGAtIlzn95G4Q

SUMMARY:Webinar - 6/8/23 - Psychological Safety for Veterinary Teams - Fear Free
DESCRIPTION:Psychological safety is the most important aspect of successful teams. Our ability to feel safe to share ideas\, to grow from failure\, and to be honest with empathy allows our team to bypass the “interpersonal mush” that can exist otherwise. A sense of belonging\, ability to be vulnerable\, and strong interpersonal relationships are the initial ingredients to create this environment. We can assess psychological safety in a team using different tools. If psychological safety is lacking\, we can help foster it using specific interventions\, including civility and growth mindset work. \nLearning Objectives: \n\nLearn the definitions and importance of vulnerability\, belonging and HQCs in the workplace\nLearn Amy Edmundson’s foundational research on psychological safety\nUnderstand how to utilize psychological safety assessments\nLearn ways for increasing psychological safety in the workplace\nExperience methods for increasing psychological safety in the workplace\n\nWEBSITE LINK:  https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_l1QWQa7HSlixzpVJgW0WZA#/registration

SUMMARY:Webinar - 6/12/23 - Separation Anxiety Webinar Series: The What and Why of Separation Anxiety - PPG (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:These can also be signed up for individually. They are listed as three different events. When you register for the live events\, you will also receive copies of the three individual event recordings. \nThree Webinars in June – Each Webinar is at Noon ET \nThe What and Why of Separation Anxiety – June 12th \nDogs experiencing stress when home alone are not at all uncommon. Separation anxiety affects approximately 20% of the pet dog population and is one of the most commonly discussed disorders in the fields of applied animal behavior and veterinary behavior. Yet\, despite such prevalence\, there remains considerable confusion about what separation anxiety is and why it exists. \nAre you interested in understanding separation-related behaviors further? Then\, this webinar is for you. This webinar will dive into a discussion defining separation anxiety and its associated behaviors\, in addition to reviewing the somewhat elusive aspects of why we are seeing such a high incidence of the issue. \nThe Many Separation Anxiety Myths – June 19th \nThere is so much contradictory information out there about separation anxiety—much of which includes myths that need busting. Unfortunately\, our industry is rife with myths in virtually every aspect of dog training\, and separation anxiety is no exception. As a result\, dog trainers and dog guardians alike are inundated with conflicting information about how to help dogs suffering from alone-time behavior problems. \nHave you ever wanted to better understand the myths about separation anxiety? This webinar will dissect many myths about causation and treatment for a clearer understanding of this disorder. Many of the myths reviewed will be genuinely eye-opening\, allowing for a more efficient and effective means of resolution. \nThe Truths and the Training of Separation Anxiety – June 26th \nImplementing a systematic desensitization protocol is the gold standard for working with separation anxiety. It is essential to remember that there are two equally important words in that phrase – both systematic and desensitization are paramount for this process. \nUnfortunately\, while the research on this disorder is significant\, concrete evidence surrounding effective treatment remains limited. Separation anxiety training is a complex topic that deserves in-depth discussion. In this webinar\, we will review the various aspects of what truly makes systematic desensitization the gold standard for resolving separation-related behavior problems. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://petprofessionalguild.com/event-5205862
