The Right Place is the place that provides the best possible outcome in the most humane and efficient way and may include the animal’s current home\, community\, foster or finder’s home\, partner organizations or the shelter. Determining the Right Place depends on the needs of the animal\, the capacity of the shelter\, and also the capacity and willingness of the community member who brings the animal to our attention. In this webinar\, Drs. Cindy Karsten and Chumkee Aziz will guide you through the framework that allows you to remove decision fatigue and get animals where they need to be—or help them right where they are. \nThis webinar is part 1 of “The Future Is Four: The Right Care in the Right Place at the Right Time to the Right Outcome Right Place” series. Register once for these four sessions\, which will be recorded. \nPresenters:\nCynthia (Cindy) Karsten\, DVM\, Outreach Veterinarian\nThroughout her KSMP career\, Dr. Karsten has helped to identify and implement best practice protocols and capacity for care models at shelters across the United States and Canada. Dr. Karsten’s recent work has focused on leading shelter medicine Bootcamps\, concentrated six-week courses for shelter leaders. The Bootcamps combine online learning with twice-weekly Zoom meetings at which participants can ask questions of KSMP experts and share their own experiences with peers making change at other shelters. \nDr. Karsten became board certified in Shelter Medicine Practice in November\, 2017. Her main areas of interest include teaching and mentoring undergraduate and veterinary students\, working with shelter leaders on change management\, and providing accessible\, affordable veterinary care to everyone who seeks it. She also continues to work to understand her role and that of animal shelters in increasing awareness of social justice issues and implementing policies to bring about equity. \nMehnaz (Chumkee) Aziz\, DVM\, Outreach Veterinarian\n Chumkee obtained her DVM degree at Tufts Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine in 2012. She then completed an internship at the ASPCA’s Bergh Memorial Animal Hospital in NYC in 2013\, which included experience in anti-cruelty work and shelter medicine. DESCRIPTION:Fearful and aggressive behaviors are generally regarded as respondent behaviors. That is\, they are considered natural reactions to certain triggers. However\, pet owners find it problematic when their animals engage in excessively fierce or fearful behaviors.\nTo address these behaviors\, trainers often rely on respondent conditioning techniques\, such as desensitization or counterconditioning. The focus of these procedures is on changing the animal’s emotional state to the trigger. Other common procedures try to directly shape a calm response using food or other positive reinforcers. \nAlternatively\, fearful and aggressive behaviors may also be seen as successful operants that are captured and maintained by negative reinforcement. That is\, engaging in the behavior leads to distance from or the removal of something that the animal finds aversive. For example\, a dog learns that when he growls\, strangers go away and leave him alone. DESCRIPTION:For understandable safety reasons\, many shelter and rescue organizations test a dog’s “sociability” with other dogs on a leash or through a fence. Members of PPG’s Shelter & Rescue Committee found that this results in false positives for “dog-aggression\,” which can result in dire consequences for the animal\, including euthanasia or increased length of stay due to adoption barriers. \nWhen 60% of US households have dogs\, a sheltered dog who must be the “only animal in the home” has a much lower chance of being adopted. A great many dogs bark\, lunge\, growl and/or snarl when introduced to other dogs on a leash or through a physical barrier like a kennel door or fence. However\, we have found that a significant number of these dogs have the ability to exhibit appropriate\, pro-social and playful behavior with other dogs when these barriers are removed. \nThis session will focus on introduction methods and behavior modification protocols that are realistic for resource-thin shelter and rescue organizations\, who may not have the luxury of qualified behavior specialists to perform dedicated and time-consuming desensitization and counterconditioning procedures. We believe we can increase adoption rates\, reduce euthanasia\, reduce “kennel stress” and length of stays with the playgroup and behavior modification protocols presented. \nThis was previously aired at Geek Week 2021 \nLearning Objectives: \n\nLearn about the free PPG resource ThePetRescueResource.com for shelters and rescues\, and see case studies and examples of the treatment of aggressive behavior with playgroups.\nDefine and understand barrier frustration vs. fear\, proximity sensitivity\, compulsive fighting\, etc.\nWhy mislabeling dogs presenting with frustration as “dog-aggressive” is a serious welfare concern.\nHow to treat barrier frustration without the resources for desensitization.\n\nAbout the Presenter: \nK. DESCRIPTION:The Right Time has two dimensions: there’s the right time for an animal to come into the shelter (could be right now\, at a scheduled time in the future\, or maybe never!)\, and then there are right times once the animal is admitted (holding periods and length of stay\, for example). Time is our most valuable resource\, and our most interconnected. Whether we’re talking about the hours our shelter is open or the demands on our staff time\, the system we build directly impacts the time an animal spends in our shelter. In this webinar\, Drs. Cynthia (Cindi) Delany and Kate Hurley will outline strategies for streamlining tasks\, reducing length of stay\, capturing lost resources\, and making the most of the resources you have. \nThis webinar is part 2 of “The Future Is Four: The Right Care in the Right Place at the Right Time to the Right Outcome Right Place” series. Over 1\,500 shelters more than tripled that goal\, between them saving over three million cats against their own baseline before joining the challenge. \nHurley’s research interests include welfare of confined dogs and cats\, humane and effective strategies to manage community cats\, and infectious disease prevention.
