SUMMARY:Webinar - 4/13/23 - Maddie's Insights: Becoming a Secure Base: Using science to improve human-animal bonds and welfare - Maddie's Fund
DESCRIPTION:Join us on the second Thursday every month for a series on the latest research in animal well-being and how you can use the findings in your shelter and community. \nThese one-hour webinars will be recorded and have been pre-approved for 1.0 Certified Animal Welfare Administrator continuing education credits by The Association for Animal Welfare Advancement and by the National Animal Care & Control Association. \nThis webcast has been approved for 1 hour of continuing education credit in jurisdictions which recognize RACE approval. \nREGISTER HERE \nThursday\, April 13 at noon Pacific / 2pm Central / 3pm Eastern\nThis webinar will be presented by Monique Udell\, Ph. D.\, CAAB\, Associate Professor of Animal Sciences at Oregon State University\, where she also runs the Human-Animal Interactions Lab. \nMany people feel that they have shared a strong bond with a do\, and there is growing scientific evidence that these dogs also form strong bonds with their humans. However\, science also tells us that not all bonds are created equal. The kind and quality of attachment relationship shared can influence a dog’s behavior and welfare outcomes. In this talk\, Dr. Monique Udell will provide an overview of attachment theory\, including what it means to be a Secure Base\, and how this knowledge can be applied to better understand and improve dog-human relationships and the relationships shared between humans and other animals. \n  \nAbout the presenter: \nMonique Udell\, Ph. D.\, CAAB \nDr. Monique Udell is a Certified Applied Animal Behaviorist and an Associate Professor of Animal Sciences at Oregon State University\, where she also runs the Human-Animal Interactions Lab. Much of her work focuses on the development of human-animal bonds and the impact that these bonds can have on the behavior and success of both species. She also studies the social behavior and cognition of a variety of species including cats\, dogs\, wolves\, and sheep\, with a special interest in the influence of domestication and lifetime experience on behavioral development\, welfare and learning. In addition\, Dr. Udell is the co-director of an animal-assisted intervention program dedicated to improving the quality of life of children with and without developmental disabilities and their family dogs and cats. SUMMARY:Webinar - 4/5/23 - The Importance of Transparency in Sheltering and Rescue - PPG (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:Much like the lack of transparency in dog training\, there’s also a lack of transparency in sheltering and rescue organizations. This webinar will review key questions adopters\, donors and those looking to support organizations should look for\, red flags to be aware of and how organizations can improve their transparency with the public. As behavior professionals\, we’ve likely all had clients who were well-intentioned adopting a dog that turned out to be more than they bargained for\, resulting in emotional and financial duress. It’s up to all of us to keep groups accountable\, educate clients and raise awareness about the importance of transparency. \nCEUs: PPAB 1\, CCPDT 1\, KPA 1 Pending IAABC \nPresented by Kate LaSala \nKate LaSala\, CTC\, CBCC-KA\, PCBC-A\, CSAT\, FFCP-E is a multi-credentialed\, certified behavior consultant and trainer\, who specializes in helping fearful\, aggressive and separation anxiety dogs and their people live better lives through one-on-one online positive training. She is a member of the PPG Shelter and Rescue Division\, a former private shelter trainer and has been involved in rescue sheltering and advocacy for over two decades. She is deeply committed to continuing education\, transparency and has worked with local HSUS chapters to help shutter puppy mill stores around the NYC area. SUMMARY:Webinar - 3/29/23 - Predation Substitute Training - A Holistic Training Program To Stop Dogs From Chasing! - PPG (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:Conventional training protocols stifle the dog’s natural predatory behaviors through punishing or constantly forcing them to return. These restrictive protocols work against the dog’s nature and against what they want most: to go for a hunt! \nPredation is an inner need that makes our dogs happy. Suppressing those natural urges is like putting a lid on a boiling pot. Eventually\, that pressure needs to escape\, and without a proper outlet\, it’s probably going to get messy. \nPredation Substitute Training (PST) is a motivation-based and need-oriented training program\, designed to stop uncontrolled predatory chasing and to provide safe outlets for our dog’s natural drive. \nInstead of making discipline the nagging factor that spoils the fun\, this training system will help dogs and their guardians to grow as a team and go hunting together! \nIn this presentation Simone is going to discuss: \n\nWhat is predation?\nWhy do our dogs love to hunt?\nWhy is predatory behaviour so hard to interrupt?\nHow and why does Predation Substitute Training work?\n\nCEUs: PPAB 1\, CCPDT 1\, KPA 1\, PMCT 1\, & IAABC Pending \nRegistered for the live event\, get busy and cannot make it! \nNo worries you will automatically receive a recording! \nAbout the Instructor \nSimone Mueller\, MA is a certified dog trainer and dog behaviour consultant (ATN) from Germany. \nSimone specialises in force-free anti-predation training and is the author of the three books of the Predation Substitute Training series “Hunting Together”\, “Rocket Recall” and “Don’t Eat That”. \nSimone is proud to be an Associate Trainer at the Scotland-based Lothlorien Dog Training Club (AT-LDTC) and a member of The Initiative of Force-Free Dog Training\, the Pet Professional Guild (PPG) and the Pet Dog Trainers of Europe (PDTE). \nFollow Simone’s work on Facebook and Instagram: #predationsubstitutetraining. SUMMARY:Webinar – 3/25/23 – For Dog’s sake\, can you stop that? Canine-Friendly Body Language Improvements for Humans – Dogs Playing for Life
DESCRIPTION:Dogs are resilient and oh-so-forgiving! These qualities make them endearing as companions\, along with their ability to love unconditionally. So\, why do some dogs struggle to understand us when we are offering affection or when we want to help them\, not harm them? In this session we will focus on the HUMAN handling that contributes to unwanted behavior\, even “aggression.” Get ready to rethink your approach as DPFL Founder and CEO\, Aimee Sadler\, reveals the common widely accepted and taught handling errors that set dogs up for failure. Through extensive video examples\, she will demonstrate alternative handling techniques that help dogs to trust and thrive! \nLearning objectives:\n– Examples of handling that causes negative behavior compared to handling that promotes desired behavior\n– Demonstration of handling that induces trust and learning with dogs that are too afraid to respond initially to food rewards or affection\n– Comprehensive discussion around the correct use of pressure and release and why this is a critical skill for shelter canine handlers to master in order to save more dogs \nThis is a 2-hour presentation followed by a Q&A session of approximately 30 minutes. This webinar will NOT be recorded and is scheduled on EASTERN TIME. \nThis webinar holds 500 attendees\, so register ahead of time and show up on time the day of the webinar (we’ll open it up 15 minutes early) to be sure to get a spot! \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://us06web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_OpMzJhaNT_Cwsd-1D-Gi1Q

SUMMARY:Webinar - 3/23/23 - Can’t Touch This! Setting Your “Leave-It” to Auto Pilot - FDSA (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:Imagine this…you’re walking along\, and suddenly your dog is at your side\, staring at you. You look around and you see why….chicken bones on the ground\, squirrels playing near the path or that ever-so-tempting pile of horse poop! \nA solid “Leave-it” cue is cool but an automatic leave-it is way better! \nThis webinar is all about just that. Starting with no cue at all\, Denise will walk you through the steps of developing a strong leave-it! First you’ll teach a traditional cue and next you’ll work towards an automatic response to attractive options in the environment. How cool is that?! \nAlong for the ride is a leave-it for the food refusal exercise found in a variety of dog sports. \nJoin Denise and find your walks become a lot more relaxing as your dog takes responsibility for leaving stuff where it belongs – in the environment! \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://www.fenzidogsportsacademy.com/index.php/self-study/webinars
