SUMMARY:Webinar - 7/13/23 - The Slice Is Right! "What the... Oh\, Okay!" Approach to Training with Suzanne Clothier- PPG (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:Good training often looks like toast turning brown. No huge drama\, just gradually better and better in easy steps – “thin slices” – that gradually add up to something beautiful. Thin slices help build the confidence that comes with repeated success\, a wonderful gift for any dog – and for any handler. \nThin slices are important in humane training\, helping us to work with animals in a way that avoids pressuring them\, respects their individual timetable and capacities\, and builds success. Underlying this approach is deep trust in the dog’s ability to do their best when we make sense to the dog in a way that suits their individual temperament\, when the slice is right. \nLearning Objectives \n\nUnderstanding how the individual dog defines the right slice\nRecognizing when the slice is right\, and when it is not\nHow lumping and fuzzy criteria block success\nWhy repetitions & reinforcement are not the whole picture\n\nCEUs: PPAB 1\, CCPDT 1\, KPA 1\, & PMCT 1 IAABC pending \nAbout the Presenter: \nSuzanne Clothier has been working with animals professionally since 1977. Her positive and humane approach\, Relationship Centered Training™ (RCT) promotes promote healthy\, respectful and joyful dog/human connections. \nThe author of Bones Would Rain from the Sky: Deepening Our Relationships With Dogs (2002)\, her innovative programs include Treat/Retreat\, the Enriched Puppy Protocol\, CARAT™\, RAT™\, FAT™\, as well as many RCT techniques\, online courses and webinars. A trainer of trainers\, she has taught on a broad range of topics throughout the US and internationally\, and served as a consultant to major service dog schools. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://petprofessionalguild.com/event-5205841

SUMMARY:Webinar - 7/13/23 - Everyday Ethics for Animal Control Officers - NACA/Justice Clearinghouse
DESCRIPTION:Wearing a badge brings a certain amount of power and great deal of responsibility. Animal control and humane officers make many decisions daily that impact people’s rights\, public safety\, animal welfare\, and—most importantly—themselves and their career. Almost all of us want to do the “right” thing in each case. But\, with so many competing interests\, how do we know what the “right” thing is? Is it ‘right’ to allow an animal to remain in a place where it will likely suffer? Is it ‘right’ to bend the rules to stop or prevent animal suffering? Who should own an animal\, and what can they do to/with that animal? And\, what about euthanasia? We will explore some of the real-world dilemmas that officers face regularly and discuss how to make the best decisions possible. \nThis session will cover: \n\nAnimal\, mineral or vegetable: what is a profession and are we one?\nWhat are the most important qualities in an animal control/humane officer?\nWhat influences can move the needle on our moral compass?\nRight vs. wrong; is it really black and white?\nTruth or consequences: When is it okay to lie?\nShould you compromise your principles?\n\nThis webinar has been certified by the National Animal Care & Control Association and is approved for 1 Continuing Education Unit. Please refer to your NACA membership portal for current CEU submission process. Current NACA Members who attend the live presentation or watch the recording will be able to download a jointly issued attendance certificate that includes the National Animal Care & Control Association logo. Visit the NACA training page for a complete list of future trainings. \nAbout the Presenter\nHarold Holmes has been the Executive Assistant for The County of Los Angeles Department of Animal Care and Control since 2016. Prior\, he was a Deputy Director for the County of San Diego Department of Animal Services and before that retired as a Chief of Police in northern California. \nHarold is a former U.S. Marine who was recalled to active duty for the Gulf War. \nA hostage negotiator and police canine handler of an award-winning patrol dog at Redlands P.D.\, when he retired from police work\, he began a new career as an animal control officer. While at San Diego County Animal Services\, he developed the Responsible Pet Ownership Program for animal-law violators\, which won an award from the California State Association of Counties. He has experience drafting and shepherding legislation that became law at both the State and local level. \nManaging San Diego County’s Dangerous Dog Task Force for three years inspired him to attend law school. Harold graduated as the Valedictorian from Western Sierra Law School and was admitted to the Bar in June 2013. He is also a hearing officer\, a trained mediator and teaches a variety of legal and law-enforcement related topics. \nHe has completed management and executive level trainings\, including the County of Los Angeles/USC Executive Leadership Development Program. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://www.justiceclearinghouse.com/webinar/everyday-ethics-for-animal-control-officers/

SUMMARY:Online Training - 7/20/23 - Understanding Aggressive Behavior in Dogs - CalAnimals (fee applies)

SUMMARY:Webinar - 8/3/23 - The Intersectionality of Wildlife and Animal Welfare: A Roadmap to Humane Outcomes for Everyone - NACA/Justice Clearinghouse
DESCRIPTION:More and more animal welfare agencies across the country are beginning to look into the connectivity between the work they do in their communities and the native wildlife that live there. Animal care and control facilities are fielding hundreds of calls yearly each relating to concerns and questions from citizens about native wildlife. Similarly\, animal control agencies are becoming increasingly tasked with responding to calls for service in the field relating to wildlife. These increasing trends can leave many agencies in the scramble trying to decide their role in wildlife conservation and conflict mitigation and filling in gaps as they appear. \nThis webinar will provide measured steps and benefits for animal welfare organizations and field service agencies to begin engaging in wildlife work and transform the way you respond to these types of situations as they arise all while upholding your humane mission. The benefits for taking the time to engage in these systematic changes are innumerable and include- humane outcomes for wildlife in your community\, a reduced workload for officers in the field\, increased disease tracking and mitigation techniques\, and a greater understanding of how to solve problems that arise with native wildlife. \nThis webinar has been certified by the National Animal Care & Control Association and is approved for 1 Continuing Education Unit. Please refer to your NACA membership portal for current CEU submission process. Current NACA Members who attend the live presentation or watch the recording will be able to download a jointly issued attendance certificate that includes the National Animal Care & Control Association logo. Visit the NACA training page for a complete list of future trainings. \nPresenter \nJennifer Toussaint is the Chief of Animal Control in Arlington County\, Virginia at the Animal Welfare League of Arlington. Jennifer joined the Animal Control team in early 2012 as a Deputy and accepted the Chief position in 2016. Since becoming Chief\, Jennifer has implemented a local ordinance in relation to exotic animal care and ownership. She has also expanded the Animal Control Department’s outreach efforts in providing additional support to pet owners to enable high owner-pet retention in the community. She specializes nationally in Humane Urban Wildlife Management practices and has been published multiple times on the topic. Jennifer is a CIT-trained officer and has trained animal control and welfare professionals on a variety of topics including: active listening\, emergency preparedness\, emotional support and service animals\, animal neglect/cruelty investigations\, and wildlife intake and triage. She is the Incident Commander for the Community Animal Response Team in Arlington\, VA. Jennifer is the 2017 recipient of the Virginia Animal Control Association Dr. Kent Roberts Animal Control Officer of the Year and received a commendation from the Virginia General Assembly for her service. In 2020\, Jennifer’s department won the Outstanding Agency of the Year award from the Virginia Animal Control Association.
