SUMMARY:National Shelter Medicine Rounds – 8/22/23 – Connecting Infectious Disease\, Wellbeing\, and Equity – University of Wisconsin Shelter Medicine Program
DESCRIPTION:The University of Wisconsin Shelter Medicine Program is thrilled to announce the next installment of National Shelter Medicine Rounds! \nNational Rounds is a platform for discussion of current topics relevant to shelter medicine for continued learning and collaboration.  While primarily intended or shelter veterinarians\, others interested in shelter medicine are welcome to join; we believe everyone will take something away from these calls!  The national rounds call will take place Tuesday August 22nd from 2:30 to 3: 30 Central Time. \nThe topic of presentation and discussion this week will be “Connecting Infectious Disease\, Wellbeing\, and Equity”. \nIf we really want to change the experiences of the animals and the people we serve\, we need to think outside our shelter walls or the foster homes that make up our rescues.  So many of the most common terrible maladies are actually quite preventable. Yet\, infectious disease so often results from inequities and lack of access to care.  If we want less illness and better welfare for everyone in our organizations and our communities\, we need to connect the dots between infectious disease\, well-being\, and equity. \nWe hope to have an open discussion\, so come with questions and feel free to unmute to participate!  Our hope is to create a space that feels safe for all participants; we ask you to follow these Accountable Space guidelines. The presentation portion of National Rounds will be recorded\, but the discussion and Q & A sessions will not. \nIf you or someone you know would like to be added to the national rounds email list\,  please send your request to nationalsheltermedicinerounds@vetmed.wisc.edu. \nPlease use the following Zoom link to access National Rounds calls: https://uwmadison.zoom.us/j/97442637396 \nMeeting ID: 974 4263 7396\nOne tap mobile\n+13017158592\,\,97442637396# US (Washington DC)\n+13052241968\,\,97442637396# US \nZoom Meeting Link:  https://uwmadison.zoom.us/j/97442637396

SUMMARY:Webinar - 8/23/23 - Northern Tier Shelter Initiative Zoomies: Behavioral Euthanasia: Approaching Decisions with Care and Impacts with Compassion - ASPCAPro
DESCRIPTION:Conversations about euthanasia\, including euthanasia decision-making\, present special challenges within our roles in animal sheltering. It is important that we approach our euthanasia decision-making processes with care and respond to the impacts of those decisions with compassion. This presentation will focus on behavior-based euthanasia decisions within a collaborative\, integrated care environment. Dr. Workman will present tools to guide those conversations and decisions that can provide space for both care and compassion – for sheltered animals\, for shelter staff\, for volunteers\, and for the community. The impacts of behavior euthanasia include moral stress and injury\, compassion fatigue\, and burnout. Mitigating those impacts requires proactive\, compassionate care and transparency. After this presentation\, you will have more tools in your toolbox to confidently approach behavior euthanasia decisions with care and compassion for all. \n\n\nTakeaways \n\n\nLearn an ethics guide to help facilitate difficult conversations about behavioral euthanasia.\nGain tools to guide pathway planning and outcome decisions with a focus on behavior euthanasia decisions.\nUnderstand the unique impacts of behavioral euthanasia on shelter staff\, volunteers\, and your community.\nAccess resources for mitigating compassion fatigue and moral injury\, including the relationship between self-care and we-care.\n\n\n\n\nSuited For \n\nAnimal welfare staff\, veterinarians\, technicians\, and staff working in the Northern Tier (Alaska\, Idaho\, Minnesota\, Montana\, North Dakota\, Washington\, and Wisconsin)\, but all are welcome. \n\n\n\nPresenter \nDr. Miranda K. Workman\, Ph.D.\, Shelter Behavior Training Liaison\, ASPCA \nDr. Miranda K. Workman is the Behavioral Sciences Team Shelter Behavior Apprenticeship Liaison for the ASPCA. SUMMARY:Webinar - 8/24/23 - DPFL’s Approach to On-Leash Reactivity - Dogs Playing for Life
DESCRIPTION:Reactivity on the part of dogs living in shelters is a rampant issue that can contribute to behavioral deterioration\, increased length of stay\, and even loss of life. From a misdiagnosis of “aggression” to dogs whose reactive behavior escalates to problematic and potentially unsafe levels\, learning how to help dogs suffering from reactivity issues is a crucial need shared by our entire industry. \nWhile this webinar can be attended as a standalone course\, we will build on our Fancy Footwork approach to handling and training to offer practical training\, handling\, and safety solutions to on-leash reactivity for dogs living in shelters. \nThis is a 1.5-hour presentation followed by a Q&A session. This webinar will NOT be recorded and is scheduled on EASTERN TIME. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://us06web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_nzsyP6FBR1aYkEiQ0zcb0g#/registration

SUMMARY:Webinar - 8/24/23 - Lessons from the Field: How One Community Transformed Its Response to Animal Cruelty through Collaboration - NACA/Justice Clearinghouse
DESCRIPTION:Resolution in animal cruelty response can take the form of criminal citation\, compliance plans\, or access to services. In striving for resolution\, cases are best served when enforcement professionals can rely on trained veterinarians\, animal rescue and sheltering entities\, and community service organizations to lend their particular expertise to each case. \nIn this webinar\, you will learn—through case studies and firsthand testimony—how the Animal Legal Defense Fund’s Collaborative Response Project helped foster collaborative relationships for one community through training\, grant funding\, and hands on support. \nEncourage animal control officers\, veterinarians\, traditional law enforcement agencies\, prosecutors\, and community organizations in your area to tune in and explore the ways you can start building sustainable partnerships on behalf of animals today.  Be the first to learn how to apply to participate in the Animal Legal Defense Fund’s 2023 Collaborative Response Project. \nThis webinar has been certified by the National Animal Care & Control Association and is approved for 1 Continuing Education Unit. Please refer to your NACA membership portal for current CEU submission process. Current NACA Members who attend the live presentation or watch the recording will be able to download a jointly issued attendance certificate that includes the National Animal Care & Control Association logo. How much of what we believe about why animals end up at our shelters is incomplete or based on oversimplified data? The reasons people surrender their pets are varied and often interwoven\, and so are the alternative solutions that can help animals stay in their homes.   \nAt this roundtable\, we’re diving into accessible interventions that divert intake to keep more pets and people together and the processes for determining and delivering those services in a welcoming\, judgment-free manner that ensures community members can reach the support they need when they need it: before the crisis.  \nPanelists   \n\nLori Weise (Downtown Dog Rescue)\nRita Ortiz (Friends of the Alameda Animal Shelter) \nDonell Randolph (Friends of Oakland Animal Services) \nKristen Hassen (Outcomes Consulting)\n\nWEBSITE LINK:  https://sheltermedicine.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_xEvcITQPSHale7-9mKFvLg

SUMMARY:Webinar – 8/31/23 – Stranger Danger! Advocating for and Advancing Your Human-Reactive Dogs – Dogs Playing for Life
DESCRIPTION:At Dogs Playing for Life’s Stranger Danger webinar\, hosted by Aimee Sadler\, CEO and Founder of DPFL\, you will learn how to work with dogs that are wary of strangers by building their confidence and helping them develop new skills which will enable them to meet new people (and potential adopters) happily and successfully! Even for the private dog trainer or dog owner\, the skills taught in this webinar will help support your stranger danger dog to expand their comfort level when meeting new people at home! \nThis webinar will demonstrate:\n— DPFL’s Assess and Progress approach: fluttering between assessing and influencing behavior to determine how a dog might respond WITHOUT proper human support to determine what training is necessary for successful placement\n— Comprehensive Tool Selection: determining what tool will best support the dog while keeping the handler and others safe during the learning process\n— Principles vs. Methods: determining what approach will teach the dog as efficiently and effectively as possible\n— Creative Proofing: conducting training with the goal of solid generalization of new skills so that dogs are able to work for multiple handlers with clarity and confidence \nCome learn how to safely and effectively reach this segment of the canine population through in-depth behavior analysis\, dynamic video examples\, and practical approaches designed for anyone who is trying to find solutions for the dogs who need this extra human support. \nThis is a 1.5-hour presentation followed by a Q&A session. This webinar will NOT be recorded and is scheduled on EASTERN TIME. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://us06web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_aWzso2CZR2SGE3cCPiDxdA

SUMMARY:Webinar - 9/5/23 - How Moods\, Emotions and Learning Relate to Undesired Behaviour with Dr. Karolina Westlund - PPG (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:Challenging behaviour in animals can range from inconvenient to embarrassing to exasperating – to the people who have to live with them. \nTo the animals involved\, those behaviours are often not problematic at all\, but rather their solution to a problem that they’re experiencing – and our task is often to help the animal find another solution that’s less annoying to us – or to remove the animal’s problem altogether. \nThis webinar will provide a framework for how to approach behavioural challenges. Using a holistic perspective involving ethological\, affective and behaviour analytical approaches\, we will discuss the following: \n\nhow mood states influence perception\, decision making and behaviour\, and how we can help change the animal’s mood.\nhow emotional reactions to triggers in the environment affect behaviour\, and how we through carefully addressing those triggers can change emotions.\nhow understanding the function of the behaviour can help explain what’s going on – and how we can change that function.\nby changing mood states\, emotional reactions to potential triggers and the function of the behaviour in the challenging context\, the animal will in turn change his behaviour.\n\nThe different techniques and perspectives used at each of these three levels of approach will be outlined in the presentation. \nCEUS Pending – IAABC; CEUs – PPAB 1\, CCPDT 1\, KPA 1\, and PMCT 1 \nAbout the Presenter \nKarolina Westlund helps pet lovers and animal professionals get happier animals that thrive in the care of humans. She grew up pining for a kitten for several years\, and pestering her parents until they gave up. The green-eyed black half-siamese cat that she got for her seventh birthday became a true friend who lived to be 21 years old\, but an easily startled cat who often went into hiding when there were visitors. \nKarolina had grand ideas about becoming a field biologist\, but that never came about – the closest she got was working as a trekking travel guide in France and Madeira. Instead she majored in Ethology and developed a passionate interest in animal welfare seen through a multidisciplinary lens\, including Behaviour Analysis and Affective Neuroscience. She is now an Associate Professor of Ethology at the University of Stockholm\, mostly teaching how behaviour management can be used to improve animal welfare. \nShe offers live seminars\, free online webinars and masterclasses in addition to more extensive online courses\, as well as the occasional blog post or scientific publication on the topic of enrichment\, animal training and wellbeing. She lives in Stockholm\, Sweden\, with her husband\, two kids\, and\, hopefully soon\, another cat. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://petprofessionalguild.com/event-5367938

Self-awareness\, personal accountability\, and relationship cultivation have been foundational as Jose navigates his career and life outside of work. In 2017\, after a decade of working to transform that organization\, Jose joined Best Friends Animal Society\, a national nonprofit organization where he served as the first Senior Director of People and Culture. \nAt Best Friends\, Jose was responsible for leading dynamic teams\, including Human Resources\, Learning and Staff Development\, Employee Experience\, and Organizational Culture initiatives\, and served as a strategic advisor to the Chief Executive Officer and Senior Leadership Team. Through collaboration\, change\, and innovative management\, Jose and his team stewarded a workplace culture that was employee- and value-centric. These efforts positioned Best Friends to win multiple Top Workplace Awards since 2020. \nIn 2023\, Jose launched Hatching\, a company centered around helping people #LiveBetter and #WorkBetter. SUMMARY:Webinar - 9/7/23 - Reclaim Your Spark: Identifying & managing emotional triggers - Fear Free
DESCRIPTION:As pet professionals\, we often battle compassion fatigue\, burnout\, and overwhelm. In this webinar\, we will discuss emotional triggers\, how to identify these triggers in ourselves\, teammates\, and clients\, and how to address and manage said triggers. You no longer have to choose between your passion for your work\, the welfare of animals\, and your own well-being. Join Colleen Pelar\, PCC to learn about tools that will support you in being your best self at work\, working more effectively\, and loving what you do again. \nIn this webinar\, you will: \n\nDefine emotional triggers\nReflect on your own emotional triggers & those of your teammates and clients\nLearn how to identify emotional triggers within yourself\, your teammates\, and clients\nGain tools to manage emotional triggers for more effective work\n\nAbout the Presenter \nDogs and people have always fascinated Colleen Pelar. When she was a dog trainer\, her favorite part of the job wasn’t teaching the dog\, but improving the relationship between dogs and their people. Both are social species\, hard-wired to connect\, and she loved offering simple\, practical tips for building those connections. With over 25 years of dog training\, Colleen has also spoken at scores of veterinary and training conferences\, and wrote three books to help parents and children have successful relationships with their dogs. After losing her joy for her work\, Colleen restored that spark by studying strategies for combating burnout and compassion fatigue and earning her certifications as a professional certified coach (PCC)\, master NLP practitioner\, applied positive psychology practitioner\, and resilience skills trainer. Her new-found knowledge led her in a new direction: sharing effective\, science-based tools that help veterinary and animal behavior professionals feel valued\, supported\, and energized. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_csI1g7WHTbqJMcDUcnrSgA

SUMMARY:National Shelter Medicine Rounds – 9/12/23 – Can heartworm treatment be faster\, cheaper and more accessible—and still safe and effective? – University of Wisconsin Shelter Medicine Program
The next national rounds call will take place Tuesday\, September 12th from 2:30 to 3: 30 Central Time. \nThe topic of presentation and discussion this week will be “Can heartworm treatment be faster\, cheaper and more accessible – and still safe and effective? (Yes. With caveats.)” by our lovely guest speakers\, Dr. Linda Jacobson and Dr. Karen Ward. \nSome veterinarians adhere closely to the American Heartworm Society Guidelines\, while many (maybe most?) use their favourite short-cuts and modifications. This talk is an evidence-based discussion of what modifications can and can’t be justified\, and where established orthodoxy and traditional approaches do and don’t make sense. It centers around the two talks we presented at the AHS Symposium in 2022 – one on our shorter\, less expensive 3-dose melarsomine study\, the other about an accessible alternative to melarsomine (moxi-doxy or “slow kill”). We’ll also challenge the audience to think about universal testing and the necessity of testing before prescribing preventives\, treating heartworm in shelters\, and more.

SUMMARY:Webinar - 9/13/23 - In the Know About Noses: Health Trends in Brachycephalic Breeds - HSVMA
DESCRIPTION:With brachycephalic breeds like French Bulldogs\, Boxers\, and English Bulldogs routinely included in most popular breed lists in the U.S.\, the only thing more common than treating them in your practice may be strong feelings about their health. But how many of the things we know about brachycephalic breeds are supported by many years of pet health data? In 2022\, Nationwide started publishing novel evidence-based pet health studies about cancer and diseases of aging pets\, leveraging their 40 years of pet health experience and data to provide pet families and veterinary healthcare teams with tangible analysis and insights. This session will provide newly published insights into diseases of brachycephalic dogs\, offering a data-informed approach to brachycephalic disease awareness\, education\, and management. \nThis program will: \n\nRecognize the role that an evidence-based approach to brachycephalic disease management can take in practice\nDiscover how the relative risk of diseases (e.g.\, respiratory\, neurologic\, and ocular) differ among brachycephalic breeds and between other dog breeds\nConsider practical health recommendations for pet families with brachycephalic dogs\n\nThis webinar is FREE for all attendees.\n1.5 hours of RACE CE credits (medical) will be available for HSVMA members only.\nNot yet a member? SUMMARY:Webinar - 9/14/23 - Maddie's Insights: Social Behavior & Implications for Bonded Pairs in Group-housed Shelter Cats - Maddie's Fund
DESCRIPTION:Little is known about the social behavior of cats living in group housing at shelters. In a series of studies\, we recorded all the social behavior occurring between cats living in group housing and compared cats who were introduced at the shelter versus those who were surrendered together. We then followed up by specifically examining social behavior between cats who were labeled as bonded pairs or adopted together. Cats who were labeled as bonded pairs had a longer time to adoption\, but the relationship between this designation and social behavior was weak. Recommendations will be provided for identifying bonded pairs. \nLearning Objectives:\n\nIdentify positive social (prosocial\, affiliative) behavior in cats\nUnderstand that being surrendered together is not adequate evidence for bonding\nRecognize the link between behavior and social bonding in cats\n\nProgram Agenda:\n\nGeneral overview of social behavior in cats\nReview of research regarding social behavior in group housed shelter cats and the impact of bonded pairs on adoption times\nLimitations of identifying bondedness in cats\nRecommendations for identifying bonded pairs\n\nThis one-hour webinar will be recorded and has been pre-approved for 1.0 Certified Animal Welfare Administrator continuing education credits by The Association for Animal Welfare Advancement and by the National Animal Care & Control Association. It has also been submitted for approval for 1 hour of continuing education credit in jurisdictions which recognize RACE approval. \nZoom registration link: https://maddies.fund/MIwebcasts \nMPF discussion thread: https://maddies.fund/MIwebcastsBondedPairs \nAbout the Presenter: \nMalini Suchak\, PhD\, Professor & Chair\, Animal Behavior\, Ecology\, and Conservation at Canisius College\nMalini Suchak\, PhD is an award-winning associate professor of animal behavior\, animal cognition (how animals think and make decisions) and animal wellbeing at Canisius University in Buffalo\, NY. Her research explores how nonhuman animals think about other individuals in their social group and make decisions about their social relationships. She previously worked with chimpanzees and capuchin monkeys\, and currently explores these questions in companion animals like cats and dogs. She is particularly fascinated with how companion animals navigate a multi-species world\, interacting with others of their own kind\, other pets\, and their human companions. \nDr. Suchak also looks at how social interactions with others can impact an individual’s welfare\, such as the impact of group housing on cats living in animal shelters. Cats are not known for being the most social creatures\, so it is important to understand the impact of different housing systems on their well-being. Dr. Suchak and her research team routinely present the results of their research at local and international conferences and have published numerous papers on this topic in peer-reviewed journals. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://maddies.fund/MIwebcastsBondedPairs
