SUMMARY:Webinar - 4/10/25 - Maddie’s Insights: Exploring Efficacy\, Barriers\, and Best Practices of Companion Animal Foster Caregiving - Maddie's Insights
DESCRIPTION:Foster care is a unique form of human-animal interaction that is increasingly understood to be an effective tool for improving the welfare of shelter-living animals. Even brief stays in foster care can allow animals to escape the stressors of the shelter\, provide an environment that allows for greater social interaction\, and offer opportunities for improved health and behavior. \nIn this presentation\, we will highlight the key takeaways revealed in the 42 published articles evaluating companion animal foster care programs that are included in our recent review paper: Companion animal foster caregiving: A scoping review exploring animal and caregiver welfare\, barriers to caregiver recruitment and retention\, and best practices for foster care programs in animal shelters. During our discussion\, we will examine a variety of foster care programs that have been studied\, explore the evidence of their effects on human and animal welfare\, evaluate the successes and challenges in supporting shelter foster care programs\, illuminate discrepancies in equity and diversity of caregiver engagement that offer opportunities for recruitment\, and recommend best practices for lasting programmatic success. \nLearning Objectives:\n1. Describe scientific research about foster caregiving as an intervention for companion animals.\n2. Identify the proximate (i.e.\, physical and emotional) and distal (i.e.\, length of stay and adoption outcomes) welfare benefits of foster caregiving for shelter animals as well as their caregivers.\n3. Explore opportunities for improving foster care programs in animal shelters\, including utilizing a stepwise approach to foster caregiving\, providing greater caregiver support\, increasing the diversity of caregiver involvement\, and expanding the extent of community engagement within foster care programs. \nGuest Speakers:\nLisa Gunter\, Assistant Professor\, PhD\, CAAB\, CBCC-KA\, and Grace Phillips\, Master’s Student\, Virgina Tech\, School of Animal Sciences \nRegister for Maddie’s Insights Webcasts: https://maddies.fund/MIwebcastsRegister

SUMMARY:Webinar - 4/10/25 - From Pickup to Prevention: How Field Services Can Keep Pets Home - HASS
DESCRIPTION:The role of field services is not limited to enforcement of public safety\, but should be embraced as the first responders to pet support services and community engagement! This often includes a primary responsibility of their role to pick up lost pets and transporting to the shelter in the hopes an owner would retrieve them. HASS asks\, what if this wasn’t the only method for field services to support lost pet reunification? \nIn honor of ACO Appreciation Month and to continue our conversation on lost pet reunification\, HASS welcomes you to join Jace Huggins\, VP & Chief of Humane Law Enforcement at San Diego Humane Society and Mike Wheeler\, Director of Cabot Animal Support Services\, as they discuss how to unite with your local animal control team to support less lost pet intake and more keeping families together. \nWEBSITE LINK: https://zoom.us/webinar/register/7017380094930/WN_kcSfw6pNSo-SnOOIqK7sbA#/registration

SUMMARY:Webinar - 4/3/25 - Translating Adopters Welcome into other Shelter Programs - Humane World for Animals
DESCRIPTION:Adopters Welcome was developed by Humane World for Animals over a decade ago to encourage shelters and rescues to remove barriers to adoption. The one-hour call is a dedicated space to share and learn from each other. Popular topics include initiatives that create a more inclusive culture for both staff and community\, programs that keep pets with their people\, industry trends\, research studies\, as well as the hard stuff\, like what’s not working or what is particularly difficult during times of scarcity. The call is a mix of presentations\, storytelling\, open discussion\, and Q&A time. \nThe All Call is hosted by California for All team members Allison Cardona\, Nadia Oseguera-Ramóna\, and Ivy Ruiz\, and is enriched by rotating facilitators. This community is for you! \nMarch 18 Topic: Fostering Community Support Through Social Work in Animal Sheltering with Monika Khuc\, LMFT\, WAGS Pet Adoption. Register to join us. \nJoin the call on March 18 to learn how Monika Khuc\, LMFT and Community Support Manager at WAGS Pet Adoption in Westminster\, California\, helped implement a social work-informed approach to address barriers faced by diverse communities\, including the Vietnamese community. By centering diversity\, equity\, inclusion\, and belonging principles\, WAGS prioritized the human-animal bond and keeping pets and families together. \nThis approach ensured culturally sensitive outreach\, resource navigation\, and tailored support\, such as bilingual support\, fostering equity and access to vital animal welfare services for all. This ensured all community members\, including the Vietnamese community\, had equitable access to vital animal welfare services\, fostering a sense of belonging and strengthening the human-animal bond across all communities. \nAt this session\, you’ll discover strategies for creating programming that validates and reflects the diverse cultural backgrounds and experiences of community members. This approach addresses barriers that might otherwise separate pets from the people who care for them. \nThrough June 3\, the All Call will provide a space for learning\, sharing\, and networking with colleagues dedicated to building stronger connections with all segments of their communities. You’ll hear how California shelters are advancing culturally-responsive programming and building bridges to decrease length of stay and increase positive outcomes for animals\, as well as the shelter staff and community members who care for them. \nAbout the All Call \nThe All Call is a twice-monthly\, California community call for animal well-being professionals that occurs on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday. You only need to register one time. Calls are sometimes recorded; recap emails with supplemental resources are sent post-call. SUMMARY:Webinar - 1/14/25 - Happy Pills: Teaching Dogs to Swallow Pills/Take Medicine - Dog iBox (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:No\, this webinar isn’t about antidepressants. It’s about teaching your dog to swallow pills. Naked pills. This is a core husbandry behavior – a component of cooperative healthcare. Though hiding medication in food or pill-pockets often works\, it can backfire. You might find yourself needing to be ever more creative about what tasty food can disguise the pill. And sometimes\, the bitter taste or weird sensation in the throat will become associated with food\, causing your dog to hesitate when offered any treat or meal. We’ll look at some options for shaping voluntary pill-swallowing\, which is an extension of the “trick” of fluent eating. Kathy’s experience working with zoo animals provides inspiration to share this information with everyone who cares for a dog. \nPresenter: Kathy Sdao \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://www.dog-ibox.com/en/teaching-dogs-to-swallow-pills-take-medicine.html

SUMMARY:Webinar - 3/13/25 - Maddie’s Insights: Helping the Helpers - Improving Shelter Staff Well-Being - Maddie's Fund
DESCRIPTION:Shelters and rescue groups have shown great resilience\, finding innovative ways to save animals despite major challenges. However\, many workers face burnout and compassion fatigue\, leading some to leave the field. \n\n\n\n\nIn 2023\, Best Friends conducted the largest U.S. survey on shelter staff well-being. Nearly half of respondents reported high compassion satisfaction\, and most plan to stay in their roles. Yet\, over half showed high burnout\, and over 90% had high compassion fatigue\, raising concerns about staff well-being and the sustainability of lifesaving efforts. \nThis presentation will focus on positive solutions and how shelters can learn from veterinary well-being practices to support staff and volunteers. \n\n\n\n\nHave questions or comments about this topic? Engage with our guest speaker on this Maddie’s Pet Forum discussion thread. https://maddies.fund/MIwebcast03132025 \nRegister now: http://maddies.fund/MIwebcastsRegister
