SUMMARY:Webinar - 12/9/21 - DPFL’s Approach to On-Leash Reactivity - Dogs Playing for Life
DESCRIPTION:Reactivity on the part of dogs living in shelters is a rampant issue that can contribute to behavioral deterioration\, increased length of stay\, and even loss of life. From a misdiagnosis of “aggression” to dogs whose reactive behavior escalates to problematic and potentially unsafe levels\, learning how to help dogs suffering from reactivity issues is a crucial need shared by our entire industry. \nWhile this webinar can be attended as a standalone course\, we will build on our Fancy Footwork approach to handling and training to offer practical training\, handling\, and safety solutions to on-leash reactivity for dogs living in shelters. \nThis is a 1.5-hour presentation followed by a Q&A session. This webinar will NOT be recorded and is scheduled on EASTERN TIME. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://us06web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_Hq5wRp8uTqyeN5djAXdCFw

SUMMARY:Webinar - 12/9/21 - Don't bite the hand that feeds you: Human-Directed Resource Guarding - Dog iBox (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:Resource guarding (a.k.a. “possessive aggression”) can be easy to spot when a dog shifts gears from their role as a cuddly family member to one that is growling\, posturing\, or snapping when their access to a valued resource is perceived to be threatened. But why does this happen? This presentation will dive deep into which aspects of this human-directed aggression pattern may be considered “normal” and which may have underlying influences of medical diagnoses or emotional disorders\, before taking an even closer look at management and behavior modification strategies that can be used for the prevention of this pattern as well as for intervention. Patterns of behavior that are specific to individual resources will be compared to dogs showing a more “generalized” pattern\, and case examples will be provided to discuss when or if medication may be helpful as part of a comprehensive intervention plan. \nWEBSITE LINK: https://www.dog-ibox.com/market/catalog/live-webinars/live-webinars-english-c-34/human-directed-resource-guarding.html

SUMMARY:Webinar - 12/7/21 - Community Cats: How to Garner Support For and Run a Successful TNR Program - NACA/Justice Clearinghouse
DESCRIPTION:This webinar will talk about the history of the Community Cat Program at the Animal Welfare League of Arlington (AWLA) in Arlington\, Virginia including where we were\, where we are now\, and how we got there. We will discuss how to garner successful support and buy-in for a jurisdiction-wide program\, how to resolve the most common community cat conflicts\, and what supportive needs arise during a TNR program. Since The Community Cat Program’s inception in 2011\, Arlington notes a 70% decrease in feral colony size and an 82% decrease in cat euthanasia\, as fewer strays mean fewer cats are brought to the shelter. Our program has achieved what everyone ultimately wants to see- a humane solution to the issue of outdoor cats. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://www.justiceclearinghouse.com/webinar/community-cats-how-to-garner-support-for-and-run-a-successful-tnr-program/\n

SUMMARY:Town Hall - 12/2/21 - Innovative Ways to Work with At-Risk Dogs - Best Friends
DESCRIPTION:All dogs\, big and small\, deserve a safe place to call home. But dogs with challenging behaviors often need a little extra help and out-of-the-box thinking to move them toward adoption. During this town hall\, Best Friends staff members will share a pilot program they created and are using at Best Friends Animal Sanctuary to help the most challenging dogs enjoy life and develop positive relationships with humans. They will introduce you to techniques to help at-risk dogs cope\, some of which you can emulate in a shelter environment. You’ll hear about the non-traditional use of traditional tools and get the resources you need to help your agency’s challenging dogs progress safely. \nModerator: Bethany Heins – Director of Strategy and Network Operations\, Best Friends Animal Society \nPanelists: Michelle Logan – Director of National Shelter Embed Programming\, Best Friends Animal Society \nTierney Sain – National Mentorship Program Specialist\, Best Friends Animal Society \nFollowing the presentation\, there will be a live Q&A. Submit your questions ahead of time during registration in the Questions & Comments box or live during the event using the chat box. For all other questions\, please email the network team at bfnetwork@bestfriends.org. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://network.bestfriends.org/proven-strategies/best-friends-town-halls

SUMMARY:Webinar - 12/2/21 - Fancy Footwork: Practical Handling and Training Solutions for the Entire Shelter - Dogs Playing for Life
DESCRIPTION:While playgroups are the foundation of our shelter training program\, teaching shelter teams how to implement a generalized\, effective\, and enjoyable way to handle and train their dogs is another essential aspect of our canine programming! In this webinar\, we will teach the fundamentals of our “Fancy Footwork” techniques that focus on achieving good leash manners through the use of your FEET instead of your hands. Come learn this unique and highly effective approach that promotes dogs happily walking softly by your side\, offering tons of eye contact\, and wowing adopters! This new approach to leash work will enhance your handling skills and increase your ability to train ALL dogs\, even those that are highly aroused\, stressed\, fearful\, or not motivated by food\, all in an effort to improve quality of life and lifesaving for dogs living in shelters. \nAdditionally\, we will teach you how to implement our critically important kennel routines. The kennel areas of our nation’s shelters can be one of the most challenging and distressing environments that dogs–and their handlers–ever face. DPFL kennel routines have been developed and taught to shelters across the country in an effort to combat these challenges and to provide safer and more successful ways for dogs and people to maneuver through the kennels. \nThis is a 1.5-hour presentation followed by a Q&A session. This webinar will NOT be recorded and is scheduled on EASTERN TIME. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://us06web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_v9zzfwDRSjmNRyUn0sayCg
