SUMMARY:Webinar - 1/8/26 - Maddie's Insights - Consentful Contact: Pilot Study on Human–Dog Touch - Maddie's Fund
DESCRIPTION:Understanding and respecting an animal’s signals during interactions can significantly enhance their welfare and improve the human-animal interactions. In this presentation\, Dr. Amir Sarrafchi will discuss his research on how dogs respond behaviourally when allowed to choose or refuse human contact. Drawing from his work on animal agency and consent\, Dr. Sarrafchi will explore how these concepts can be practically applied in everyday animal care\, shelter environments\, and adoption programs. \nThe session will translate research findings into simple\, effective strategies that caretakers\, trainers\, and shelter staff can use to promote consent-based handling and improve welfare outcomes. \nLearning Objectives \n\nRecognize behavioural indicators that reflect a dog’s comfort or discomfort during human interaction\nUnderstand the importance of agency and consent in enhancing animal welfare and fostering a more humane relationship between humans and animals\nApply practical strategies for incorporating choice and consent into daily care\, training\, and shelter routines\n\nEarn continuing education credit from The Association for Animal Welfare Advancement towards 1.0 CAWA CEs. This webinar has also been pre-approved for 1.0 continuing education credits by the National Animal Care & Control Association (NACA). It has also been approved for 1 hour of continuing education credit until 10/14/2027 in jurisdictions which recognize RACE approval. \nAbout the speaker\nDr. Amir Sarrafchi is a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Guelph in Ontario\, Canada. His PhD research focused on animal behavior and the impact of providing animals with agency and consent on their welfare during human-animal interactions. He holds a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree and a Master’s in Applied Ethology and Animal Biology. \nDuring his PhD\, Dr. Sarrafchi investigated how allowing animals\, particularly horses and dogs\, to exercise choice during interactions with humans influences their behavioral and physiological responses. His recent work explores how promoting agency can improve welfare outcomes in both companion and working animals. Dr. Sarrafchi is passionate about bridging the gap between science and practice to enhance the daily care\, handling\, and understanding of animals. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://maddies.fund/MIwebcastsRegister

SUMMARY:Webinar - 1/14/26 - Capacity for Care: Setting the Right Target & Finding Tools to Stay There - CalAnimals
DESCRIPTION:The term “Capacity for Care” gets thrown around a lot\, but what does it actually mean and can it even be useful in the face of the seemingly relentless onslaught of large dogs shelters are facing today? \nIn this practical webinar\, Dr. Kate Hurley from the UC Davis Koret Shelter Medicine Program will cover the specifics of how to calculate the right target number to maximize life-saving while optimizing animal health and welfare – and staff sanity. Hurley will demonstrate how any shelter can use the Koret Shelter Medicine Program’s free online C4C calculator to estimate how many animals need to be housed at any one time\, based on expected monthly intake and target length of stay. Then we will dive into a practical example of how this number was calculated and aligned with housing capacity at the South L.A. branch of Los Angeles Animal Services (LAAS)\, part of one of the largest and most challenging shelter systems in the United States. \nAnnette Ramirez\, Interim General Manager from LAAS\, along with members of her team\, will share their agency’s experience of going from severe crowding to attaining\, and more importantly maintaining\, a population pretty close to their Capacity for Care. A key to success was moving from long standing policies driving a reactive decision making process to a proactive framework that can identify dogs at risk before they deteriorate severely or the population swells beyond staff’s ability to provide care. And they did it even in the face of rising intake and without increasing the euthanasia rate! It’s a pretty inspiring example and we hope it will be a useful one for many shelters facing similar challenges. \nPresenters: \nDr. Kate Hurley from UC Davis Koret Shelter Medicine Program\nAnnette Ramirez\, Garens Loyd\, Sarah Quintanilla from Los Angeles Animal Services \nWEBSITE LINK: https://www.calanimals.org/on

SUMMARY:Webinar - 1/29/26 - The Puppy Puzzle: Data-driven Insights into America’s New Dogs - Life of Riley
DESCRIPTION:Current sources of data on U.S. puppy “creation” reveal how much isn’t known about where puppies come from. To help fill the gap\, a survey of 4\,000 people (selected to align with the U.S. Census demographics) who recently acquired a puppy offers insights into the breeds and sources of new puppies\, owners’ acquisition journeys\, satisfaction with both puppy and that puppy’s source\, and more. Survey responses offer new data and insights that fill in knowledge gaps; identify issues and concerns that deserve further attention across animal sectors; and reveal the complexity and diversity of experiences among puppies and their people. \nSpeakers: Joyce Briggs and Valerie Benka \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://www.ticketleap.events/tickets/springpointpartners/the-puppy-puzzle-data-driven-insights-into-america-s-new-dogs

SUMMARY:Webinar - 2/12/26 - Maddie's Insights: Not All Cats Want a Couch: Using Research for Decisions on Working Cat Placements - Maddie's Fund
DESCRIPTION:Recent research published in the Journal of Shelter Medicine and Community Animal Health highlights an important truth: not every cat is suited for life in a traditional home. Using the Feline Spectrum Assessment (FSA)\, the study revealed that cats least likely to be socialized were more fearful\, less affectionate\, and less amenable to handling post-adoption (even by their primary caretaker) compared to their more socialized counterparts. Adopters of these cats were also more likely to report their cat would have been happier outside\, underscoring the need for shelters to carefully match cats with appropriate placement pathways. This evidence helps confirm what many in sheltering already know—while adoption is an ideal outcome for many cats\, it is not the right outcome for every cat. \nIn the case of cats for which a traditional adoption pathway would not be appropriate and TNR/RTF is not possible\, working cat or barn cat programs provide a humane and practical alternative. But careful consideration must be given to ensure the cat is medically appropriate\, the placement site is suitable and safe\, and that the transition into a new environment is conducted in a thoughtful\, stepwise way. At Toronto Humane Society\, cats identified as barn cat candidates are selected using the FSA alongside behavioral history and ongoing monitoring of in-shelter behavior modification progress\, then integrated using a structured acclimation process: a period of crate confinement\, followed by exploration in a secure space such as a tack room\, before eventual free-roam. This approach maximizes welfare and sets both the cat and placement site up for long-term success. \nLearning Objectives: \n\nUnderstand how findings from recent research on the Feline Spectrum Assessment can inform decisions about which cats are best suited for traditional homes\, barn cat placement\, or TNR/RTF.\nLearn how to identify appropriate candidates for barn or working cat programs by combining FSA results\, behavioral history\, and in-shelter progress.\nExplore step-by-step strategies to successfully integrate barn cats into their new environments in ways that support welfare\, safety\, and long-term success.\n\nGuest Speaker:\nJacklyn Ellis\, MRes PhD CAAB CSB-C\nDirector\, Behaviour\, Toronto Humane Society \nEarn continuing education credit from The Association for Animal Welfare Advancement towards 1.0 CAWA CEs. This webinar has also been pre-approved for 1.0 continuing education credits by the National Animal Care & Control Association (NACA). SUMMARY:Webinar - 2/12/26 - Reactivity and aggression: When fear is NOT the driver - FDSA (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:Reactive and aggressive behaviors in dogs are often explained almost exclusively through the lens of fear. While fear-based reactivity and aggression is real and important to understand\, it is not the only pathway that leads to responses such as barking\, lunging\, charging\, running fence lines\, growling\, snapping\, or biting. Many dogs display intense\, persistent\, or confrontational behaviors for reasons that are not rooted in fear\, and applying a fear-based framework in these cases can result in the implementation of ineffective training strategies\, unfair expectations\, limited progress\, and frustration for both dogs and their humans. This webinar explores aggression and reactivity in dogs when fear is not the primary driver. We will examine behaviors that are preference-driven\, innately reinforcing\, and/or shaped by genetic selection\, including alerting behaviors\, guarding and territorial responses\, prey-driven and movement-triggered reactions\, genetic intolerance of other dogs\, and autonomy-based intolerance of handling or personal space violations. We will also address excitement-driven behaviors and clarify how positive valence high arousal can shift into frustration and redirected aggression when access to a desired outcome is blocked. A key focus of this webinar is understanding why some dogs find behaviors such as barking\, posturing\, chasing\, or engaging in altercations\, intrinsically reinforcing\, and why performing alternative behaviors can require significant mental effort even when those skills are well trained. We will discuss how behavior becomes habitual through repetition\, how reinforcement history shapes responses\, and why not all intense behavior reflects emotional dysregulation. We will discuss how to distinguish between fear-based responses\, preference-driven fixation\, intense frustration\, and boundary-driven intolerance\, and why these distinctions matter when choosing training and management strategies. Topics include ethical use of interruption\, the role of structure and trained alternative behaviors\, realistic expectations around tolerance versus enjoyment\, the importance of meeting innate needs through appropriate outlets\, and the added complexity of working within multi-dog households where arousal and behavior can rapidly escalate. This webinar is designed for anyone wanting a clearer\, more nuanced framework for understanding complex behaviors. The emphasis throughout is on safety\, fairness\, and practical strategies that are effective while respecting both canine needs and real-world constraints. \nPresenter: Sharon Carroll \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://www.fenzidogsportsacademy.com/index.php/self-study/webinars

SUMMARY:Webinar - 2/19/26 - Do THIS! Not THAT! Differential Reinforcement for Common Behavior Problems - FDSA (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:We’ve all heard the golden rule of dog training: “What do you want the dog to DO instead?” But turning that concept into a reliable\, stress-free behavior within a behavior modification plan is easier said than done. It’s not just about picking a replacement behavior; it’s about the science of how that behavior is built. \nAs an experienced and certified behavior consultant\, let me take you on a deep dive into the world of Differential Reinforcement (DR). In this webinar\, we’ll move beyond basic obedience to show you how to change a dog’s state of mind\, arousal levels\, and emotional response (CER) to help a behavior modification plan succeed. \nWhat You’ll Learn: \n\nThe Power of Positive CER: Why a “Sit” fueled by food and play works in high-stakes environments\, while a “Sit” fueled by correction falls apart.\nThe DR Toolkit: A clear\, practical breakdown of DRI (Incompatible Behavior): Teach a behavior your dog can’t do at the same time as the unwanted one. DRA (Alternative Behavior): Reinforce a more appropriate\, polite option\, and DRO (Other Behavior): Reward your dog for doing anything other than the problem behavior and how to know exactly which tool to pull from the belt.\nPrecision Implementation: Why fluency and latency are the “make or break” factors in your training plan.\nThreshold Management: How to keep your dog in a learning state of mind so your training actually sticks.\nReal-World Solutions for Common Problems\n\nI will demonstrate how to apply DR strategies to the struggles ownersface every day\, including: \n\nJumpers: Re-wiring greetings for both owners and guests.\nDoor Darters: Creating safety and focus at the threshold.\nLeash Manners: Transitioning from “frantic” to “focused” on walks.\nBig Emotions: Addressing demand barking\, frustration\, and reactivity rooted in fear or anxiety.\n\nPresenter: Karen Deeds \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://www.fenzidogsportsacademy.com/index.php/self-study/webinars

SUMMARY:Webinar - 2/24/26 - Hacking the Learning Brain: The Neuroscience of Objective Feedback - PPG (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:As behavior professionals\, we are experts at reading animal body language and marking precise behaviors. However\, when it comes to coaching the humans at the other end of the leash\, communication often becomes subjective\, emotional\, or overwhelming. Whether you are correcting a client’s leash handling\, mentoring a junior trainer\, or receiving feedback from a colleague\, the way information is exchanged determines whether the learner shuts down or levels up. \nThis webinar dives into the neuroscience of communication using the SCARF Model to explain why feedback can feel like a threat and how to transform it into a powerful “behavior tool.” You will learn practical\, field-tested techniques like the “Micro-Yes” to gain consent\, strategies for layering feedback to prevent cognitive overload\, and methods for reframing critiques into objective data. We will also explore how to empower students through self-assessment\, turning them into active participants in their own learning journey. \nLearning Objectives\nBy the end of this session\, attendees will be able to: \n\nDefine Feedback as a Behavioral Antecedent: Understand how feedback functions as a tool to shape human behavior\, much like markers shape animal behavior.\nApply the SCARF Model to Client Coaching: Identify the five social domains (Status\, Certainty\, Autonomy\, Relatedness\, Fairness) to minimize “threat responses” and keep clients in a learning state.\nUtilize Consent-Based Communication: Implement the “Micro-Yes” technique to gain learner buy-in before offering corrections or advice.\nExecute Layered Feedback Protocols: Prioritize and deliver feedback in “layers” (Safety → Core Mechanics → Refinement) to avoid “lumping” and learner shutdown.\nReframe Subjective Criticism into Objective Data: Use the “Video Camera Rule” to translate emotional or vague labels into observable\, actionable behavioral facts.\nFacilitate Student Self-Reflection: Utilize specific questioning techniques to help clients and students assess their own performance\, building their confidence and autonomy.\n\nPresenter – Niki Tudge \nCEUs: PPAB 1.5\, PMCT 1.5\, CCPDT 1.5\, KPA 1.5\, IAABC 1.5 \nWEBSITE LINK: https://www.petprofessionalguild.com/webinars-events/webinars/hacking-the-learning-brain-the-neuroscience-of-objective-feedback/
