In 2017\, after a decade of working to transform that organization\, Jose joined Best Friends Animal Society\, a national nonprofit organization where he served as the first Senior Director of People and Culture. \nAt Best Friends\, Jose was responsible for leading dynamic teams\, including Human Resources\, Learning and Staff Development\, Employee Experience\, and Organizational Culture initiatives\, and served as a strategic advisor to the Chief Executive Officer and Senior Leadership Team. Through collaboration\, change\, and innovative management\, Jose and his team stewarded a workplace culture that was employee- and value-centric. SUMMARY:Webinar - 9/21/23 - Animal Shelter Safety: Proven Strategies to Reduce Serious Bites and Other Risks -CalAnimals
DESCRIPTION:When shelters are full\, they’re at higher risk of safety-related incidents including falls\, serious bites\, and dog-to-dog altercations. Shelters often respond to safety incidents by increasing euthanasia\, restricting animal movement\, or introducing reactive rules and policies. Unfortunately\, these measures do not address the underlying problems causing safety incidents\, so they’re unlikely to be effective over the medium and long term. \nThe good news is there are lots of proactive steps animal shelters can take to improve safety and reduce risk. In this session\, we’ll use real-life examples of dog bites\, injuries\, and other safety incidents to explore the roots of what went wrong and what corrective actions will help. We’ll specifically cover: \n• The role of shelter rounds in maintaining and improving shelter safety\n• Kennel safety/fight interruption equipment and maintenance\n• Kennel enrichment to improve safety\n• Quick and easy safety training for staff and volunteers\n• Pre-contact disclosure protocol for staff and volunteers\n• Locks vs. carabiners: which one is actually safer?\n• The risks and benefits of cohousing dogs \nThis session is fast-paced and interactive and will leave attendees feeling empowered to create a culture of safety in their organization. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_yICttaVdT66PKJIc5ez0Vg

SUMMARY:Webinar - 9/21/23 - Threshold: Is It What You Think It Is? - FDSA (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:We all say things like “my dog is over threshold” or “keep him under threshold\,” but do you really know what that means? We all know that being under threshold is best if we want stress reduction and good learning to take place\, yet everyone has a different definition of threshold for their dog. \nDo you want your dog to feel better emotionally and be in a good learning space mentally? Come examine the idea of threshold\, how you can best determine it for your dog\, and how getting it right can really accelerate the reduction of stress in your dog! \nPresenter: Amy Cook\, PhD \nNote: This webinar is back by popular demand! Since it last ran in 2018\, it will be re-recorded and updated for this event! SUMMARY:Webinar - 9/25/23 - The Anxiety Pendulum Presented by Jean Donaldson - PPG (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:We have come a long way in applied dog behavior in the recognition and treatment of fear\, stress and anxiety in dogs.  From a veritable denial of its existence before the advent of the force-free training movement to a much broader and more sophisticated range of behavior modification\, management and medication options today. \nThis webinar will look back at this history and then delve into whether we now might sometimes invoke anxiety and stress where it is inappropriate\, why this might be\, and why it would be better for dog welfare to avoid these errors. \nPresented by Jean Donaldson\nCEUs: 1 IAABC\nPending CEUs: PPAB \, CCPDT \, KPA \, & PMCT \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://petprofessionalguild.com/event-5368412

SUMMARY:Webinar - 9/26/23 - Finessing a Fear Free Stay: Safe Animal Handling - Fear Free
DESCRIPTION:Do you have the occasional high-intensity\, fearful\, or shy pet stay with you while their pet owners are away? These pets often need a little extra care to feel safe and secure during their stay and play sessions. Join us to learn tips and tricks to reduce fear\, anxiety\, and stress (FAS) in sensitive pups\, ways to increase control with impulsive dogs\, and strategies to set up a more serene space in our upcoming webinar. \nBrought to you by our friends at Virox. \nIn this webinar\, you will learn how to: \n\nRecognize and respond respectfully to noted signs of FAS\nImplement strategies that soothe high-intensity\, impulsive dogs\nSet up serene spaces for dogs to play and/or stay\n\nFear Free’s Lead Animal Trainer and Dog Behavior Counselor\, Mikkel Becker\, shares that from early life\, it was clear her number one focus would be animals. Her training career started early with help from her childhood dog\, a Wire Haired Fox Terrier named Scooter\, who delighted in fun games like running in the opposite direction when called\, leading the neighborhood bark patrol and terrorizing other dogs in a blaze of terrier-fueled fury. When frustration created what could have been rifts between dog and pet parent\, pure love was instead able to bridge those gaps and create a wiser\, more resilient child and dog. In pursuit of formal animal training education\, Mikkel graduated from the San Francisco SPCA Dog Training Academy with Jean Donaldson to earn a Certificate in Training and Counseling (CTC)\, the Karen Pryor Academy to earn her KPA CTP credential\, and the Purdue Dogs and Cats Course. Amongst Mikkel’s long list of achievements\, she also achieved becoming a Certified Behavior Consultant Canine (CBCC-KA)\, a Certified Professional Dog Trainer (CPDT-KA) and a Certified Dog Behavior Counselor (CDBC). Mikkel also co-authored “From Fearful to Fear Free: A Positive Program to Free Your Dog from Anxiety\, Fears\, and Phobias” with Dr. Marty Becker and Dr. Wailani Sung. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_SEsfR-fgTlC-_gHMCUACNQ

SUMMARY:Webinar - 9/27/23 - Keeping People and Pets Housed - The AAWA
DESCRIPTION:Animal welfare advocates are on the front lines and able to provide information\, guidance\, and resources to people with pets facing housing challenges. This session will provide you with the knowledge and skills needed to provide compassionate and effective case management for any program working with vulnerable pets. You will also learn how to collaborate with the human services sector in your community to improve outcomes in keeping people and pets together. \nAdditionally\, we will discuss laws that help tenants combat being denied housing due to their pets. Keeping pets housed requires keeping people housed. In 2022\, the Humane Society of the United States launched its first pet-inclusive housing mentorship with the Cleveland Animal Protective League and Richmond SPCA. Attendees will see examples of geographic information system (GIS) mapping to identify areas of need in their communities and learn how to use a combination of data\, policy change\, and safety net programming to help families maintain or secure pet-inclusive housing. \nPresenters:  \n\nSharon Harvey\, President & CEO\, Cleveland Animal Protective League\nGarrett Parsons\, Pet Support Supervisor\, Found House Interfaith Housing Network\nDianne Prado\, Founder & Director\, Housing Equity & Advocacy Resource Team (HEART LA)\n\nWEBSITE LINK:  https://learning.theaawa.org/p/9-27-23

SUMMARY:Webinar - 10/4/23 - The Problem with Messaging: How Our Words Are Holding Us Back - The AAWA
DESCRIPTION:Animal welfare has a messaging problem. Current messaging can stoke divisions amongst those who work in animal welfare and between us and members of the communities we serve. There is an increasing focus on access to care and programming to support the human-animal bond\, but we use words and stories that hold us back. Everyday narratives undermine our efforts to help people and their pets together and contribute to an epidemic of burnout in animal welfare and sheltering. \nWhen we change our messaging\, we can tell a different story and shift from harmful narratives and beliefs to those that create connection\, collaboration\, and\, ultimately\, better programs. In this session\, we explore why messaging challenges are happening\, how they shape the realities we experience every day\, and what we can do about it. You will hear about SPARC (Supporting People and Animal Relationships for Change) and the program’s messaging principles and practices that can help us do our most impactful work for people and animals. \nPresenters: \n\nAlison Fotsch Kleibor\, CAWA\, President & CEO\, Wisconsin Humane Society\nBrad Shear\, CAWA\, CEO\, Potter League for Animals\nHanna Lentz\, Co-Founder\, Impact by Design (IbD)\n\nWEBSITE LINK:  https://learning.theaawa.org/p/10-04-23

SUMMARY:Online Event - 10/9/23 to 10/13/23 - Big Hairy People and Pets Summit & Workshops - Getting2Zero (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:AIAM\, G2Z and AMRRIC invite you to participate in the Big Hairy People and Pets Summit & Workshops. \nThe three most active and influential organisations working at the intersection of community health and safety and companion animal welfare and management in Australia are combining forces to deliver a never seen before event. This conference and workshops will be a celebration of collaboration\, reconnection\, and knowledge sharing and builds on the work of the organisations convening the event. \nThe theme for this year’s conference is Breaking Down Barriers. \nIn 2023 we will focus on the programs\, practices and strategies that involve and engage the community in managing their pets. We will be looking at the role that organisations play in providing support to both companion animals and the people who care for them. \nWhat are the barriers to positive results in the work that is undertaken? What can be done to reduce or remove those barriers? How can we engage the broader community with companion animal management and the problems that face the sector and those that work in the space? How can the issue of companion animal management and sheltering be looked at from a broader\, social\, ethical and One Health perspective? How can we empower pet lovers\, owners\, carers and those without pets to be a part of the solutions? \nThese\, and many more questions relating to social change\, community safety and welfare\, animal management and welfare\, emergency management and responsible pet ownership will be discussed at this event. \nAttend sessions incorporating practical training delivered by experts in the field. Industry and sector leaders from Australia and overseas will lead sessions to explore innovative solutions to guide Australia’s approach to the management of companion animals now and into the future while providing insights on how the challenges are being met elsewhere. \nAttendance at this conference is essential for everyone involved in companion animal and community health and safety policy and practice\, including those working in all levels of government\, the not-for-profit welfare\, shelter and rescue sector\, the research\, academic and veterinary professions\, and the pet industry. \nWEBSITE LINK:  bit.ly/PeopleandPetsSummit

DESCRIPTION:The University of Wisconsin Shelter Medicine Program is thrilled to announce the next installment of National Shelter Medicine Rounds! \nNational Rounds is a platform for discussion of current topics relevant to shelter medicine for continued learning and collaboration.  While primarily intended or shelter veterinarians\, others interested in shelter medicine are welcome to join; we believe everyone will take something away from these calls!  The next national rounds call will take place Tuesday\, October 10th from 2:30 to 3: 30 Central Time. \nThe topic of presentation and discussion this week will be “Use of the Modified Live Canine Distemper Virus and Canine Parvovirus Vaccine in Neonatal Puppies in Animal Shelters” \nWe know that the single best way to protect neonatal and juvenile animals from infectious disease is to care for them in an environment where exposure to disease is low (which does not describe a shelter environment!)  Despite efforts to find alternative housing options for these vulnerable animals\, underage puppies still end up in animal shelters.  Previous recommendations have been to wait until 4 weeks of age to begin vaccination\, potentially missing opportunities to provide protection as early as possible.  Please join us for national rounds Tuesday October 10th when Dr. Sandra Newbury (UW) and Dr. Kate Hurley (UC Davis) discuss a new recommendation for vaccination of neonatal and juvenile puppies in environments that present meaningful risk. \nWe hope to have an open discussion\, so come with questions and feel free to unmute to participate!  Our hope is to create a space that feels safe for all participants; we ask you to follow these Accountable Space guidelines. The presentation portion of National Rounds will be recorded\, but the discussion and Q & A sessions will not. \nIf you or someone you know would like to be added to the national rounds email list\,  please send your request to nationalsheltermedicinerounds@vetmed.wisc.edu. \nPlease use the following Zoom link to access National Rounds calls: https://uwmadison.zoom.us/j/97442637396 \nMeeting ID: 974 4263 7396\nOne tap mobile\n+13017158592\,\,97442637396# US (Washington DC)\n+13052241968\,\,97442637396# US \nZoom Meeting Link:  https://uwmadison.zoom.us/j/97442637396
