SUMMARY:Webinar - 2/15/25 - From the Backyard to the Front Page: Building a TNR Movement - Community Cats Podcast (small fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:So many cats\, so few trappers… and veterinarians… and holding space… and transporters. If you live in a well populated urban or suburban area and you’re trying to use TNR to address your city or town’s entire free-roaming cat population\, you’re going to need a lot of help! How do you mobilize the public to trap the cats in their own backyards and get hands-on involved\, attract volunteers and gain community support? \nLearn from the folks who started the community TNR program in New York City and helped other municipalities organize their programs as well. We’ll go over training the public\, providing support services\, tracking success\, gaining publicity and more. \nTake advantage of the interactive format\, extensive handouts\, and real-life video footage from actual projects. Attendees will receive a certificate of attendance and access to a dedicated Facebook group for ongoing networking with fellow TNR advocates. \nThis session is led by Susan Richmond\, Executive Director\, and Bryan Kortis\, National Programs Director\, and lasts 2.5 hours\, followed by an optional 15-minute Q&A session. Registration is just $10.00. \nThis course/webinar/series/conference has been approved for Continuing Educational Units by the National Animal Care & Control Association (NACA). National certificate holders can submit for credit consistent with the NACA CEU policy located https://nacatraining.org/continuing-education-recertification/ \nWEBSITE LINK: https://register.gotowebinar.com/register/7923043849557765726

SUMMARY:Webinar - 2/27/25 - Peer Support in Animal Welfare - NACA/Justice Clearinghouse
DESCRIPTION:In the dynamic realm of animal welfare\, the significance of peer support cannot be emphasized enough. Join us in this webinar as we explore the concept of peer support and its applications in the fast-paced settings of animal sheltering and animal control. We will address how peer support can enhance other mental health initiatives within your organization and the crucial aspect of proper implementation. \nUnlike first responders\, the animal welfare sector lags in mental health resource accessibility and addressing the urgent mental health challenges faced by our professionals. Attendees will receive tools to assist them in joining or establishing a peer support team. By the end of this session\, participants will be able to: \n\nDefine peer support.\nRecognize when it is required.\nIdentify and understand what constitutes a “Critical Incident” in the Animal Welfare Profession.\n\nThis webinar has been certified by the National Animal Care & Control Association and is approved for 1 Continuing Education Unit. Please refer to your NACA membership portal for current CEU submission process. Current NACA Members who attend the live presentation or watch the recording will be able to download a jointly issued attendance certificate that includes the National Animal Care & Control Association logo. SUMMARY:Online Event - 2/27/25 - Maddie's Monthly Behavior Connection - Turning Fear into Friendship: Building Trust with Shelter Cats - Maddie's Fund
DESCRIPTION:Guest Speaker: Jacklyn Ellis \nDespite our best efforts\, the shelter can be a stressful place for cats. Some cats love humans but the separation from what is familiar coupled with exposure to a new and scary environment can cause them to shut down. Others may be poorly socialized and need assistance to form a positive association with humans. It is our duty to help them have the best possible well-being while in our care\, and human-animal interaction as enrichment can play an important role in that. But how to bridge that gap from fear to friendship can be confusing/frustrating – some efforts can seem to do more harm than good. It can be difficult to know what approach to use\, how to guide staff and volunteers on how to use it\, and to know if your efforts are really helping. This webinar will guide attendees on a formal program for gaining the trust of the more fearful cats in your care\, and a method for tracking their progress and welfare so that case managers can know when to implement additional interventions. \nAbout the speaker: Jacklyn Ellis is board certified by the Animal Behavior Society as a Certified Applied Animal Behaviorist\, is Certified in Shelter Behavior – Cat by the International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants and is the Director of Behavior at Toronto Humane Society. She earned her PhD in Animal Welfare at the Atlantic Veterinary College\, University of Prince Edward Island\, where she conducted research on methods for reducing stress in shelter cats. Her work has been published widely in peer reviewed journals and she has presented at many national and international conferences\, particularly on feline stress and elimination behavior. She has recently authored two chapters for a new edition of the leading textbook on the behavior and welfare of shelter animals. \nJoin us on the fourth Thursday of every month as we talk about dog and cat behavior – supporting pets in our community and animal shelters. Each month\, we hear from speakers about topics of interest to our group\, such as behavior medications\, modifying animal behavior\, assessing and improving animal welfare\, and how organizations successfully provide behavior support to dogs and cats. \nWho should join: Animal welfare staff and volunteers who are interested in dog and cat behavior\, and everyone who works to keep pets out of shelters and in homes. \nYou only need to register once for all meetings: https://maddies.fund/MonthlyBehaviorRegistration \nCan’t attend live? Register anyway and you will get a link to the recording within a day or two after each meeting. \nAll recordings and resources shared during the webcast will also be available in the Maddie’s Monthly Behavior Connection group on Maddie’s Pet Forum – https://maddies.fund/monthlybehaviorconnectionMPF \nMaddie’s Fund does not share registration information. \nThe opinions expressed by webinar presenters are their own and do not necessarily represent those of Maddie’s Fund. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://maddies.fund/MonthlyBehaviorRegistration

SUMMARY:Webinar - 3/13/25 - Maddie’s Insights: Helping the Helpers - Improving Shelter Staff Well-Being - Maddie's Fund
DESCRIPTION:Shelters and rescue groups have shown great resilience\, finding innovative ways to save animals despite major challenges. However\, many workers face burnout and compassion fatigue\, leading some to leave the field. \n\n\n\n\nIn 2023\, Best Friends conducted the largest U.S. survey on shelter staff well-being. Nearly half of respondents reported high compassion satisfaction\, and most plan to stay in their roles. Yet\, over half showed high burnout\, and over 90% had high compassion fatigue\, raising concerns about staff well-being and the sustainability of lifesaving efforts. \nThis presentation will focus on positive solutions and how shelters can learn from veterinary well-being practices to support staff and volunteers. \n\n\n\n\nHave questions or comments about this topic? Engage with our guest speaker on this Maddie’s Pet Forum discussion thread. https://maddies.fund/MIwebcast03132025 \nRegister now: http://maddies.fund/MIwebcastsRegister

SUMMARY:Webinar - 1/14/25 - Happy Pills: Teaching Dogs to Swallow Pills/Take Medicine - Dog iBox (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:No\, this webinar isn’t about antidepressants. It’s about teaching your dog to swallow pills. Naked pills. This is a core husbandry behavior – a component of cooperative healthcare. Though hiding medication in food or pill-pockets often works\, it can backfire. You might find yourself needing to be ever more creative about what tasty food can disguise the pill. And sometimes\, the bitter taste or weird sensation in the throat will become associated with food\, causing your dog to hesitate when offered any treat or meal. We’ll look at some options for shaping voluntary pill-swallowing\, which is an extension of the “trick” of fluent eating. Kathy’s experience working with zoo animals provides inspiration to share this information with everyone who cares for a dog. \nPresenter: Kathy Sdao \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://www.dog-ibox.com/en/teaching-dogs-to-swallow-pills-take-medicine.html
