SUMMARY:Online Event - 12/3/24 - All Call: Fighting Hunger with Pet Food Pantries and Community Collaboration - California for All Animals
DESCRIPTION:At 12 p.m. PT on December 3\, join Jorge Delgado and Cel Jimenez from the Humane Society of Sonoma County for our last All Call of the year. They will discuss their Community Action Team initiatives\, including how they sustain their pet food pantry\, engage human services agencies\, and more! \nPet food pantries are becoming part of animal shelter community programming to prevent animal surrenders and help people in need feed their pet companions. Although these pantries provide much-needed relief for the community\, sustaining them long-term is challenging and stressful due to the lack of support from hunger relief organizations like food banks. It is time to raise awareness regarding pets’ food insecurity and advocate for our pet’s guardians in need. Please join us to discuss strategies to build a sustainable pet food pantry and how to create support among food banks and pet food pantries to fight hunger in our communities. \nAbout the All Call \nThe All Call is a twice-monthly\, California community call for animal well-being professionals that occurs on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday. The one-hour call is a dedicated space to share and learn from each other. Popular topics include initiatives that create a more inclusive culture for both staff and community\, programs that keep pets with their people\, industry trends\, research studies\, as well as the hard stuff\, like what’s not working or what is particularly difficult during times of scarcity. The call is a mix of presentations\, storytelling\, open discussion\, and Q&A time. \nThe All Call is hosted by the California for All Animals team\, Nadia Oseguera-Ramón\, Ivy Ruiz\, and Allison Cardona. You only need to register one time. Calls are sometimes recorded; recap emails with supplemental resources are sent post-call. \nRegister here: https://tinyurl.com/all-call

SUMMARY:Webinar - 12/11/24 - Isn't That Just Medicine: The Art and Science of Spectrum of Care - HSVMA
DESCRIPTION:Veterinarians are in the unique and challenging position of balancing the medical needs of their patients with the emotional\, physical\, and financial needs of their clients and their own moral and legal obligations to both. Embracing the spectrum of care can help to accomplish this delicate balancing act. \nSpectrum of care is the idea that in every situation there is a range of options–both diagnostically and therapeutically–for patients and clients. More invasive\, extensive\, and expensive options fall on one end of the spectrum while less invasive\, more cost-effective options fall on the other\, with a wide range of middle ground options in between. Within this range is the best fit for each individual patient and client. The right choice will maximize the patient’s quality of life within the client’s limitations. \nLearning Objectives: \n\nDevelop an understanding of what the spectrum of care is and how it differs from current definitions of standard of care and gold standard care.\nReview literature that supports spectrum of care options in management of common case presentations including foreign body ingestion\, pyometra\, parvovirus\, and blocked cats.\nDevelop communication strategies to connect with clients and determine the best fit for each individual pet and family within the spectrum of care.\nDefining barriers to spectrum of care (more than finances!).\n\nThis webinar is FREE for all attendees. 1.5 hours of RACE CE credits (pending) for HSVMA members only. \nPresented by: Kate Boatright\, VMD\, Founder\, KMB Veterinary Media LLC \nWEBSITE LINK: https://hsvma.memberclicks.net/webinar-spectrum-of-care

SUMMARY:Webinar - 12/12/24 - Maddie's Insights: Insights and Implications from Housing-Related Animal Shelter Intake Data - Maddie's Fund
DESCRIPTION:Housing insecurity for tenants has increased in severity in the last several years as rents have skyrocketed and eviction rates have\, in many cities\, climbed higher than even pre-pandemic levels\, according to a 2024 Harvard study. Today\, more renters than ever are experiencing at least moderate rent burden as unaffordability in the rental market hit an all-time high in 2022. Housing insecurity directly impacts peoples’ ability to acquire and keep pets for life. There is a small\, but growing body of research to better understand the impact of rental housing conditions on pets\, pet owners\, and animal shelters in the U.S. and how this issue relates to broader affordable housing and tenants’ rights social justice advocacy. \nThis presentation will share the results of three research projects\, co-authored by our guest speaker Dr. Lauren Loney\, a licensed attorney\, researcher\, and advocate crafting policies and lobbying on a variety of issues at local\, state\, and federal levels. Her talk will address the impact of restrictive pet policies in rental housing on pets\, animal shelters\, and the tenants who love them. Join us to learn about trends in pet relinquishment due to housing issues and several programmatic tools that may be most useful to mitigate the flow of these pets into animal shelters. \nRegister here: https://maddies.fund/MIwebcastsRegister \nCan’t attend live? Register anyway and you will get a link to the recording after the webcast. This webinar has been pre-approved for 1.0 Certified Animal Welfare Administrator continuing education credits by The Association for Animal Welfare Advancement and by the National Animal Care & Control Association. It has also been approved for 1 hour of continuing education credit in jurisdictions which recognize the Registry of Approved Continuing Education (RACE) approval. \nKey take-aways: \n\nThe audience will understand how animal welfare and pet policy issues intersect with traditional affordable housing and tenants’ rights issues\, particularly for low-income families.\nThe audience will understand the difference between “pet-friendly” and “pet-inclusive” housing and why our affordable housing crisis\, in general\, means that policy advocacy for pet-inclusive housing include pushing back against the use of nonrefundable pet fees and rents.\nThe audience will learn about trends in pet relinquishment due to housing issues and several programmatic tools that may be most useful to mitigate the flow of these pets into animal shelters.\n\nVisit the Maddie’s Pet Forum Discussion Thread to ask questions to our presenter: https://maddies.fund/MIwebcastHousingRelatedShelterIntakeData \nPresenter: Lauren Loney\, Attorney and Independent Researcher \nWEBSITE LINK: https://maddies.fund/MIwebcastsRegister

SUMMARY:Webinar - 1/2/25 - Circle Method for Basic Reactivity and Over Arousal (Part 2) with Denise Fenzi - FDSA (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:This webinar is intended to provide advice\, interventions\, and skills for individuals working with reactive or overexcited dogs. “The circle method of Loose Leash Walking” will be used to help the behavior and emotional state of reactive and over-aroused dogs by allowing them to adjust to their environment\, reconnect with their handlers\, and become more emotionally comfortable in the presence of specific triggers. The method can be used regardless of food interest and does not require elaborate set-ups. The information presented will build upon the circle method of loose leash walking\, and will assume knowledge of that material. This webinar assumes professional or amateur trainers who can assimilate the information with a preexisting working knowledge of dog behavior\, reactivity and over-aroused behavior. \nNote: This webinar is back by popular demand.
