SUMMARY:Webinar - 7/30/20 - Working and Managing Inter-Agency Relationships: Investigating & Prosecuting Animal Abuse Cases - NACA/Justice Clearinghouse
DESCRIPTION:Successful animal cruelty investigations and prosecutions require strong relationships between many agencies and entities. The police\, animal services\, animal rescue groups\, veterinarians\, prosecutors\, and more have a part to play in bringing these cases to the finish line. In this webinar\, Oregon’s special prosecutor for animal cruelty cases Jake Kamins will discuss his experiences\, good and bad\, in coordinating multiple agencies through taking these often-complex cases to trial and bringing these defendants to justice. \n  \nYou will learn: \n\nHow to coordinate investigations and search warrants with multiple agencies involved.\nBest practices for ensuring all discovery is collected and turned over when multiple agencies are working on a case.\nHow to ensure agencies will continue to work together harmoniously on animal cruelty cases.\n\n  \n\n \n  \nThe National Animal Care & Control Association (NACA) was formed in 1978 for the express purpose of assisting its members to perform their duties in a professional manner. We believe only carefully selected and properly trained animal control personnel can correct community problems resulting from irresponsible animal ownership. NACA’s purpose is to preserve the Human/Animal Bond by insisting on responsible animal ownership. \n  \n  \n  \n \n  \n  \nThe National Law Enforcement Center on Animal Abuse was established by the National Sheriffs’ Association to provide law enforcement officers information on the realities of animal abuse and to promote their proactive involvement in the enforcement of animal abuse laws in their communities. Through our partners\, the Center will serve as an information clearinghouse and forum for law enforcement on the growing problem of animal abuse and its link to other types of crimes\, including violence against humans. The Center also promotes officer safety in officer-dog encounters through continuing education and training. \n  \n  \n\n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPresenters:\n\n\n\nSince 2013\, Jake Kamins has served as Animal Cruelty Deputy District Attorney (AC-DDA) in the State of Oregon\, where he represents the State in criminal animal cruelty cases. To date\, Jake has been sworn as a Deputy District Attorney in 21 of Oregon’s 36 counties\, prosecuting over 150 individual cases of animal abuse and neglect. \nAs AC-DDA\, Jake trains and consults with law enforcement\, veterinarians\, animal rescue workers\, and attorneys on animal cruelty issues. He also communicates regularly with the media as a subject matter expert and has been involved in legislative drafting and testimony. \nJake worked as a Deputy DA at the Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office from 2009-2013. He received his B.A. in 2004 from Brandeis University in Waltham\, Massachusetts\, and his J.D. in 2009 from Lewis & Clark Law School in Portland\, Oregon. At Lewis & Clark\, Jake was an Associate Editor of the Lewis & Clark Law Review and clerked at the Clackamas County District Attorney’s Office. While at Multnomah County\, Jake developed a passion for working on animal cruelty cases. In 2012\, he was named one of the nation’s Top 10 Animal Defenders by the Animal Legal Defense Fund. \nJake lives in Portland\, Oregon with his wife\, his two children\, and Sophie and Scarf\, the family cats. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://justiceclearinghouse.com/webinar/working-and-managing-inter-agency-relationships-investigating-prosecuting-animal-abuse-cases/

SUMMARY:Webinar - 7/30/20 - 8 Strategies for Creating a More Inclusive Volunteer Program -MAVA
DESCRIPTION:Many organizations struggle to engage volunteers who reflect the racial and ethnic diversity of the communities they serve. In response to this issue\, the Minnesota Association for Volunteer Administration (MAVA) recently embarked on a research study which resulted in a set of eight strategies for creating a more inclusive volunteer program within nonprofit and government organizations. These strategies serve as a starting point for leaders who are seeking concrete next steps for better engaging volunteers from communities of color. In this interactive session\, led by Lisa Joyslin\, Inclusive Volunteerism Program Manager at MAVA\, you’ll learn about the eight strategies\, share your own experiences and create an action plan for launching a more inclusive volunteer program within your own organization. The session will be moderated by Jamila Cowan-Wideman\, Director of Global Employee Empowerment at Dell\, a member of IAVE’s Global Corporate Volunteer Council (GCVC). \nAbout the Presenter – Lisa Joyslin: \nLisa Joyslin is the Inclusive Volunteerism Program Manager at the Minnesota Association for Volunteer Administration (MAVA). Her work is focused on learning how to address systemic inequities in volunteer engagement systems to better engage communities of color as volunteers at nonprofit and government organizations. Lisa has worked in the field of volunteer engagement for nearly 15 years\, including 4 years as the Volunteer Services Officer for the Red Cross Minnesota Region and positions at multiple volunteer centers. She holds a Master of Public Policy degree from the University of Minnesota. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://register.gotowebinar.com/register/5164834233830611984

SUMMARY:Webinar - 7/29/20 - Stress Matters: Impact of Fear and Anxiety on Learning - Dog-iBox (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:The process of learning is affected by many different factors\, including the emotional state of the individual. By reading the body language of dogs\, we can better understand their emotional state and their ability to respond to training exercises. This presentation will cover many of the body language signals that dogs are likely to show when stressed\, fearful or anxious. Perhaps even more importantly\, information will be included about how this emotional state directly impacts the process of learning and the effect on a plan or the animal’s response to specific exercises. Strategies such as making adjustments to reinforcement value\, refining aspects of the stimulus gradient during desensitization and counterconditioning exercises\, altering performance expectations\, and setting realistic criteria for success will be covered. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://www.dog-ibox.com/market/catalog/stress-matters-impact-of-fear-and-anxiety-on-learning.html

SUMMARY:Webinar - 7/29/20 - Confronting Conflict with Teams - Banfield
DESCRIPTION:Conflict is something that\, as much as we try\, we cannot avoid because conflict comes up anytime your view differs from another’s — and humans are opinionated beings. While most of us have a strong reactions to conflict\, including (but not limited to) fear; avoidance; and/or dread\, conflict can also have positive impacts. It can allow for exploration of new and different ways of doing things resulting in better outcomes. When we think of the negatives of conflict it’s because of the emotions that conflict evokes — often making situations feel explosive. By learning how to step up to conflict and confronting it head on by using the right approach\, you can turn conflict into a positive for both you and your team. \nDate: Wednesday\, July 29th\nTime: 9:00 am – 10:30 am PST\nCourse Timing: 1.5 hour virtual session with 15 minute pre-work (RACE approved) \n\n\n\nWEBSITE LINK:  https://app.jobvite.com/TalentNetwork/action/campaign/w/NzM0OTg

SUMMARY:Weekly Call - Monday Mornings - Connect With Other Animal Shelter Professionals - Maddie's Fund
DESCRIPTION:Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic\, animal shelter workers\, volunteers and animal welfare leaders from across the country have been meeting every Monday morning at 7am PT/10am ET to discuss protocols\, ideas\, obstacles they’re facing and more.   \nLed by Kristen Hassen-Auerbach\, Director of Pima Animal Care in Tucson\, AZ\, these calls have provided an opportunity for people to connect that otherwise may not have even met.    \n“The purpose of these calls is simple – maintain connection among shelter professionals\, provide support and comradery\, and share science-based news and information along with emerging best practices in animal welfare\,” Hassen-Auerbach says. “These calls are always lively and interesting and we’re not afraid to debate and share different perspectives from the attendees. You can take center stage and share your thoughts and ideas in front of several hundred of your colleagues or quietly drink your morning coffee and listen in.”  \nFor many\, these calls have been an invaluable resource. “When the subject of DEI (Diversity\, Equity and Inclusion) came to the front of all of our minds\, the calls adapted and we had a space to again learn from one another\,” said Emily Klehm from South Suburban Humane Society in Chicago Heights\, IL. “The calls have been my go-to source for grant information\, statistics and trends. I’ve also been able to identify and connect to colleagues working on the same issues in similar communities.”  \nDr. Ellen Jefferson\, Executive Director at Austin Pets Alive! adds\, “We hear from people in the industry who have important information related to COVID\, new programming and research.  This is information you can’t possibly get in your day to day work at your local shelter.”  \nIf you’re a shelter professional\, dedicated volunteer or run a rescue organization\, we want you to join us! Bookmark this link and we will see you on Monday! \nNote: The calls are recorded so if you can’t make it\, you can listen in later. If you haven’t already\, join the Facebook group to access the link to recorded calls and to connect with others on there.
