SUMMARY:Weekly Call - Monday Mornings - Connect With Other Animal Shelter Professionals - Maddie's Fund
DESCRIPTION:Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic\, animal shelter workers\, volunteers and animal welfare leaders from across the country have been meeting every Monday morning at 7am PT/10am ET to discuss protocols\, ideas\, obstacles they’re facing and more.   \nLed by Kristen Hassen-Auerbach\, Director of Pima Animal Care in Tucson\, AZ\, these calls have provided an opportunity for people to connect that otherwise may not have even met.    \n“The purpose of these calls is simple – maintain connection among shelter professionals\, provide support and comradery\, and share science-based news and information along with emerging best practices in animal welfare\,” Hassen-Auerbach says. “These calls are always lively and interesting and we’re not afraid to debate and share different perspectives from the attendees. You can take center stage and share your thoughts and ideas in front of several hundred of your colleagues or quietly drink your morning coffee and listen in.”  \nFor many\, these calls have been an invaluable resource. “When the subject of DEI (Diversity\, Equity and Inclusion) came to the front of all of our minds\, the calls adapted and we had a space to again learn from one another\,” said Emily Klehm from South Suburban Humane Society in Chicago Heights\, IL. “The calls have been my go-to source for grant information\, statistics and trends. I’ve also been able to identify and connect to colleagues working on the same issues in similar communities.”  \nDr. Ellen Jefferson\, Executive Director at Austin Pets Alive! adds\, “We hear from people in the industry who have important information related to COVID\, new programming and research.  This is information you can’t possibly get in your day to day work at your local shelter.”  \nIf you’re a shelter professional\, dedicated volunteer or run a rescue organization\, we want you to join us! Bookmark this link and we will see you on Monday! \nNote: The calls are recorded so if you can’t make it\, you can listen in later. If you haven’t already\, join the Facebook group to access the link to recorded calls and to connect with others on there.

DESCRIPTION:A Fear Free approach to veterinary care is better for our patients\, but what about our practices? \nThis presentation from Michael Hargrove\, DVM\, MBA\, will demonstrate how becoming a Fear Free Certified Practice has business benefits that extend well beyond improved patient care. As a certified business appraiser\, he also discusses how adopting a Fear Free practice culture can translate to an improved practice value when it comes time to sell. \nDr. Michael Hargrove is the owner of a 7-doctor small animal practice in Duluth\, Minnesota. His practice has been AAHA-certified for 41 years and in 2018 became the first Fear Free Certified Practice in Minnesota. SUMMARY:Webinar - 7/15/20 - Large-Scale Animal Cruelty Seizures: Key Considerations - NACA/Justice Clearinghouse/HSUS
DESCRIPTION:EVENT DETAILS\n\nPreparing for a large-scale animal cruelty seizure provides exceptional challenges and can be daunting for any agency. This webinar will briefly review how to prepare for\, and execute\, one of these cases\, from case-building through prosecution. Specifically\, it will cover how to prepare for a case involving a significant number of animals\, with a focus on engaging key stakeholders and securing critical physical/personnel resources. The presentation will discuss evidence documentation and sentencing considerations\, unique to large-scale cases. \n  \n  \n\n \n  \n  \nThe National Law Enforcement Center on Animal Abuse was established by the National Sheriffs’ Association to provide law enforcement officers information on the realities of animal abuse and to promote their proactive involvement in the enforcement of animal abuse laws in their communities. Through our partners\, the Center will serve as an information clearinghouse and forum for law enforcement on the growing problem of animal abuse and its link to other types of crimes\, including violence against humans. The Center also promotes officer safety in officer-dog encounters through continuing education and training. \n  \n  \n \n  \nThe National Animal Care & Control Association (NACA) was formed in 1978 for the express purpose of assisting its members to perform their duties in a professional manner. We believe only carefully selected and properly trained animal control personnel can correct community problems resulting from irresponsible animal ownership. NACA’s purpose is to preserve the Human/Animal Bond by insisting on responsible animal ownership. \n  \n  \n  \n \nFounded in 1954\, the Humane Society of the United States and its affiliates around the globe fight the big fights to end suffering for all animals. Together with millions of supporters\, the HSUS takes on puppy mills\, factory farms\, trophy hunts\, animal testing and other cruel industries\, and together with its affiliates\, rescues and provides direct care for over 100\,000 animals every year. The HSUS works on reforming corporate policy\, improving and enforcing laws and elevating public awareness on animal issues. \n\n  \n  \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://justiceclearinghouse.com/webinar/large-scale-animal-cruelty-seizures-key-considerations/

SUMMARY:Online Meeting - CASCAR - 7/14/20 and 7/21/20 - California Animal Shelters - DEI - UC Davis Koret Shelter Medicine Program
DESCRIPTION:This Tuesday: Diving back into social and racial justice for California animal shelters\n\nYou are invited to join our two-part discussion session happening this Tuesday\, July 14th.\n\nThe sheltermedicine.com newsletter: your portal to better sheltering.\n\n\n\nSave the Date: DEI and your shelter.\n\nTwo-part DEI discussion sessions this Tuesday (7/14) and next Tuesday (7/21).\n\n\nHi All\,\n\nWe just got off the phone from the group planning session for our upcoming CASCAR calls and we’re really looking forward to our time together on Tuesday! Jose Ocano and Jyothi Robertson will be joining us again for a two-parter this Tuesday\, July 14th\, and the following Tuesday\, July 21st\, to dive deeper into applying a racial and social justice lens both within our organizations and to the work that we do.\n\nWe will move through definitions and establishing cultural foundations into practical tactics with plenty of room for discussion. As always\, our hope is to create a respectful and friendly context for exploration and sharing of questions\, ideas and experiences.\n\nJust shedding lots and lots of light on this discussion and refusing to let it fade into the background as other pressing issues emerge (and surge☹️)\, is really helpful. At least\, that’s our sincere hope.\n\n\n\nCheck the CA shelters page for links to this and previous CASCAR calls.\n\nWe would love for this to be inclusive of interested staff at every level so please feel free to share with your team. Coming up\, we can discuss changing the time of these calls to better accommodate schedules now that more people are back to work onsite\, We realize 10am isn’t the easiest for kennel staff.\n\nAs always\, if you have questions or suggestions for this discussion or future CASCAR topics\, email us at CASCAR@sheltermedicine.com <mailto:CASCAR@sheltermedicine.com>.\nRemember\, if you volunteer to lead a section of a call\, you get a CASCAR mug of your own!\n\n\nDr. Kate Hurley and the KSMP Team
