Resources will be provided to help attendees enhance their snake response and advisement policies and protocols. \nAbout the Presenter \nDave Pauli started his animal career in 1979 by opening a wildlife rescue business in Madison\, Wisconsin called Humane Animal Controls\, Inc.    Since that time he also served as a Superintendent of Animal Control (Billings Animal Shelter)\, Director of bi-county Humane Society in Eastern Washington (Tri-Cities) and for the past 29 years as a field responder/director for The Humane Society of The United States. \nDave has responded to domestic animal/exotic/wild animal projects in all 50 states and two dozen countries. Dave currently responds to natural disasters\, major cruelty and hoarding cases\, and participates in Chemical immobilization\, and immunocontraception projects for deer and horses. He also participates in volume capture projects for prairie dogs\, feral dogs and cats\, and many other species. He also supports and advises all HSUS Wildlife\, Animal Rescue Team\, Humane Society International and the Wildlife Land Trust teams with field projects or programs.  He is an HSUS point person on Wild Pigs\, Prairie Dogs\, Turtles and Tortoises\, Florida Gopher Tortoises\, Trapping Issues and Wildlife Contraception. Although I enjoyed my role dearly\, there was still something missing. The medical side of care just did not feel like I was where I was supposed to be. I had always wanted to volunteer raising puppies to become service dogs\, so I started researching non-profit organizations. I soon found one and attended my first meeting and was hooked. Training dogs is what makes me feel complete. It’s my calling.  I attended Animal Behavior College where I earned my certification as a Certified Dog Trainer.  I am a dog lover first\, and a dog trainer second. I know from first-hand experience the difference dog training makes in the relationship between dog and owner. DESCRIPTION:How many times have you heard “What do you want them to DO instead”? I’ve said it a lot myself! Trained behaviors can be a valuable tool within a behavior modification plan. However\, it is beneficial to adhere to certain details. \nA differential approach is based on the principles of operant conditioning; a behavior is shaped by its consequences. The trainer provides positive reinforcement for desired behaviors which can create good habits and prevent bad ones. \nYour dog’s state of mind and arousal level are important aspects of the DR approach. Implementing the acceptable trained behavior needs to be done under threshold to be effective. As with all DR behaviors\, it is important that they be fluent with little to no latency and that they evoke a positive Conditioned Emotional Response (CER). That is why the way we train is important. For example\, a trained SIT to avoid a leash correction will not carry the necessary positive CER that a dog that will SIT to gain something like food\, praise\, or play. \nThere are three different types of differential reinforcement. DRI – Incompatible. This is often the most difficult process to implement as it requires creating an incompatible behavior where the undesired behavior is completely impossible to perform. DRA- Alternative. This is likely the most common type of DR behavior implemented. The dog is reinforced for any alternative behavior other than undesired behaviors. DRO – Other.
