SUMMARY:Webinar – 6/7/21 – MAC 2021 Webinar Series – The Future of Sheltering: Human Animal Support Services – Massachusetts Animal Coalition
DESCRIPTION:What if there was a way animal welfare organizations could meaningfully address and solve the root causes of why animals enter shelters in the first place? The Human Animal Support Services (HASS) project is a collaborative effort of more than 500 animal welfare experts\, 40 shelters and 36 working groups that are aiming to do just that. In the process\, big lessons are being learned\, revolutionary changes are happening\, barriers in the community are broken down as the community becomes more involved – all allowing animals and people to stay together. \nLearn about: \n\nThe different components of HASS\, how these components work to break down barriers making adoption\, fostering\, vet care etc accessible to all communities and how you can easily implement them in your organization.\nProven strategies for reducing intake and housing more pets outside of the shelter.\nEmbracing technology\, repurposing staff\, and accomplishing the HASS model without a lot of extra funding.\nUtilizing Volunteers in ways you never imagined to make all of this possible.\n\nSpeaker Information \nKristen Hassen is the Director of Maddie’s American Pets Alive!\, overseeing the Maddie’s Academy\, Human Animal Support Services\, and other lifesaving initiatives. Kristen formerly served as the Director of Pima Animal Care Center\, an open admission\, government animal shelter in Tucson\, Arizona with an intake of 20\,000 animals annually and a live release rate of 93%. While at PACC\, Kristen launched many of the Human Animal Support Services initiatives\, including building the nation’s largest municipal shelter foster program\, with 5\,500 pets going to foster care annually. Before that\, Kristen served as the Deputy Director at Austin Animal Center\, in Austin\, Texas and the Assistant Director at Fairfax County Animal Shelter in Fairfax\, Virginia. \n\nWEBSITE LINK:  http://events.constantcontact.com/register/event?llr=dmv5lydab&oeidk=a07ehw9aaoj0f484258

SUMMARY:Webinar - 6/9/21 - Thinking Outside the Snot: Shelter Medicine Approaches to Upper Respiratory Infections in Cats - EveryCat Health Foundation
DESCRIPTION:Cats in animal shelters are uniquely prone to upper respiratory infections\, aka URI or “the cat common cold”. These infections are complicated. They are inextricably tied to stress and crowding in cats. They can be caused by a number of viruses and bacteria. You can’t vaccinate or treat your way out of an established URI problem. Affected cats are often treated with antibiotics\, even though infections are often viral\, and this can result in poor appetite\, vomiting\, diarrhea and resistant infections. Chronic URI can be a nightmare for shelters and adopters\, and can sometimes cause severe health issues. \nThis presentation will focus on newer shelter medicine approaches to URI – prevention strategies that have succeeded to the point that many shelters no longer have a “URI problem”; when to isolate affected cats and when that’s not needed; when diagnostic tests are needed and which ones are useful; when to treat and with what; and how to manage a newly adopted cat that is sneezing. RACE Approved! \nDr. Linda Jacobson obtained her veterinary degree in Pretoria\, South Africa\, in 1986\, and went on to specialize in companion animal internal medicine. She has been at the Toronto Humane Society since 2010\, where she is currently Senior Manager\, Shelter Medicine Advancement. \nIn 2015 she completed a Graduate Certificate in Shelter Medicine through the University of Florida. Linda is co-founder and President and Treasurer of the Ontario Shelter Medicine Association. She serves on the Standard of Care Working Group of the College of Veterinarians of Ontario and Toronto Humane Society’s Unsocial Cat Working Group.  Her professional passions and interests include accessible veterinary care\, infectious diseases\, animal hoarding\, and evidence-based medicine. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://everycat.org/thinking-outside-the-snot-shelter-medicine-approaches-to-upper-respiratory-infections-in-cats/

SUMMARY:Webinar - 6/16/21 - Access to Veterinary Care: Community Care Models to Prevent Relinquishment - The AAWA
DESCRIPTION:Many animals are surrendered to shelters due to medical issues that an owner cannot afford to treat\, but many of these owners would keep their pets if they could. There is usually no option for low cost/free\, full-service (incremental care) medicine\, due to laws\, vet associations\, and a lack of providers. The situation is also complicated by the lack of data to help target a solution to an affordable level. We’ll discuss how to calculate a goal and fit a solution to your shelter’s needs. Learn about the 3 types of medical care that communities can start providing to families now in an effort to decrease shelter surrender and increase reclaim of pets with inaccessible medical needs. \nThis webinar will especially benefit shelter medical staff\, shelter executives\, and other operational leaders. \nThis session is part of the Shelter Medicine series\, a collaboration between the Association of Shelter Veterinarians and The Association for Animal Welfare Advancement. \nThis live and recorded program is approved for 1 Certified Animal Welfare Administrator continuing education credit and pending approval for 1 hour of continuing education credit in jurisdictions which recognize RACE. \nIf you wish to earn RACE CEs\, you MUST submit your veterinary/tech license number + license state when you join the live session or after you watch recording (due to new AAVSB RACE requirements)!  Participants have to attend at least 50 minutes of the live session / watch 50 minutes of the recording in order to receive the 1-hour credit of RACE CE. \n\nWEBSITE LINK:  https://learning.theaawa.org/products/61621-access-to-veterinary-care-community-care-models-to-prevent-relinquishment

SUMMARY:Webinar - 6/16/21 - Befriending Your Grief: How to Cope with Euthanasia and Other Veterinary-Related Losses Time - HSVMA
DESCRIPTION:Veterinary professionals often go into the field with a passion for animal welfare. One of the realities of the role is that we are faced with the death of the animals in our care\, often multiple times daily\, and in many cases\, we assist in aiding end of life through euthanasia. While there has been a little more education and information provided to veterinary professionals on how to support animal owners through their grief\, very little attention is paid to the grief veterinary professionals experience themselves. This program covers grief reactions related to the primary and secondary losses veterinary professionals experience every day. \nThis presentation will address the following objectives: \n\nProvide an understanding of grief and how it can manifest\nProvide an awareness of disenfranchised grief in the animal care profession\nProvide a discussion of the overlap of grief and compassion fatigue\nProvide ideas on how to cope with euthanasia and other veterinary-related losses based in theory\n\nWe hope you’ll join us for this important welfare-focused webinar. The webinar is open to all participants. \nRACE CE will be provided FREE to current HSVMA members only.\nIf you are not yet an HSVMA member or need to renew your membership\, please visit the HSVMA website HERE. \n  \nPRESENTER: Sarina Manifold\, LCSW \n \nSarina is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) in TN and NC\, and Adjunct Professor with the University of Tennessee College of Social Work. Sarina previously worked at the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine for 10 years as one of the clinical social workers who provided grief support and crisis intervention to clients of the Small and Large Animal Hospitals and members of the community\, provided counseling to UTCVM students and House Officers\, and oversaw the communication training for UTCVM’s veterinary medical students. \nShe has moved to NC with her family and now owns a private practice where she continues to provide Veterinary Social Work services. Specifically she offers grief counseling for the loss of an animal\, counseling to animal care professionals to help manage compassion fatigue\, and consultation to the community for animal related issues. SUMMARY:Online Event - 6/17/21 - Mini Event: The Future of Sheltering - Humane Canada (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:Humane societies\, SPCAs\, animal shelters and rescues are society’s safety nets for animals\, but we can’t discredit the role that human-animal bond plays in supporting people and the role the community plays in supporting these organizations. The COVID-19 pandemic was a perfect example of this. To prevent the spread of the virus\, most shelters and animal care workers limited services and changed their operations to maintain physical distancing. Anticipating a shortage of staff and limited operations\, shelters called on their communities for support\, and those communities stepped up to help on an unprecedented level. As a result of this\, animal welfare organizations across the globe were given the opportunity to review the importance of maintaining the human-animal bond and in keeping families and pets together. \nJoin us on June 17 to learn from experts from across the continent on the important connection between animals\, community members and animal sheltering organizations. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://humanecanada.swoogo.com/minievents/1177765

DESCRIPTION:A colorful\, fun\, but basic presentation\, based on Cat Genetics “001”\, describing the fundamentals of identifying cat colors and patterns.  The presentation also discusses some of the most popular breeds of cats.  With less than 5% of companion cats being an actual “breed” of cat\, the common model of describing dogs in terms of combinations of “breeds”\, doesn’t work in the world of cats.  Participants learn that “tabbies” are not a breed of cat but all cats are tabby cats!   What’s the difference between a tortie and a Calico\, why do some white kittens have a little black mark on the top of their heads\, what do all pointed cats have in common?  Participants learn the answers and much more. \nPresenter \nVickie Fisher\, President-Elect\, EveryCat Health Foundation (a Winn Feline Foundation legacy)\nImmediate Past President\, The International Cat Association\, Inc. SUMMARY:Webinar - 6/17/21 - The Importance of Agency - FDSA (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:Agency describes the overall amount of control an animal has over its environment. Control is a big buzzword in the dog world right now. There is an increasing call from professionals to give our dogs more control. How do agency and control actually impact behavior? Why are they so important? Luckily for trainers\, we have many decades worth of research on this topic! And the research suggests that providing animals with a sense of agency is critically important for promoting their emotional wellbeing. It turns out that control changes how the brain functions and can influence the animal’s entire world view! \nThis talk will start with a discussion of learned helplessness and what it tells us about the impact of lack of control. I will cover how control (or lack of it) influences brain function and how it can change an animal’s approach to his or her environment in dramatic ways. Finally\, we will talk about different ways of increasing control for our dogs. This webinar is great for puppies and adult dogs and for pet owners and professionals alike. \nClick here to view guest instructor biography \nDate: Thursday\, June 17\, 2021\nTime: 3pm Pacific Time (Click here for time at FDSA (Pacific Time).\nFee: $19.95 – Registration required PRIOR to scheduled presentation time.\nInstructor: Kristina Spaulding\, PhD\, CAAB \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://www.fenzidogsportsacademy.com/index.php/self-study/webinars

SUMMARY:Webinar - Driving a Cat Culture Shift with the Ten Movement Webinar - AmPa!/HASS
DESCRIPTION:A recent creative campaign featuring “Scooter the Neutered Cat\,” helped spur a transformation in the live-release rate of cats and drove a culture shift in the way Cincinnati\, OH thinks about cats. On June 17\, Deborah Cribbs\, chairperson of the nonprofit cat advocacy group\, the Ten Movement\, will join Monica Frenden\, Maddie’s® Director of Feline Lifesaving at American Pets Alive!\, to share about this breakthrough campaign. The Ten Movement recently pivoted its focus from owned cats to community cats with its campaign\, “Mild Kingdom.” Learn more about this new campaign and how the Ten Movement’s efforts changed the way people think about\, behave toward\, and interact with community cats in this live webinar. \nRegister Here:  https://bit.ly/3cdMyoe

SUMMARY:Webinar - Getting to Know You: Understanding Dog-Dog Greetings - FDSA (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Jennifer Summerfield – Getting to Know You: Understanding Dog-Dog Greetings\nDate: Thursday\, June 17\, 2021\nTime: 6pm Pacific Time (Click here for time at FDSA (Pacific Time).\nFee: $19.95 – Registration required PRIOR to scheduled presentation time. \nFor most of us\, it makes intuitive sense that when people greet each other in social settings\, there’s a lot going on in those first few moments! Handshakes (or other traditional greeting rituals\, which can vary in different cultures)\, eye contact\, and the words we use to address each other are all important components of human greeting behavior.\nDogs are highly social animals with a rich repertoire of communication signals at their disposal\, so it shouldn’t surprise us to learn that they have their own forms of species-specific ritualized greeting behavior. And just like in human society\, dog-dog greetings can go well\, or poorly… and can lead to anything from a polite passing “hello” or a successful round of play\, to an explosion of barking and lunging\, or even an all-out fight. \nIn this webinar\, we’ll discuss the anatomy of a “normal” dog-dog greeting interaction\, as well as common variations you might see depending on breed and general personality. We’ll also talk about how these interactions can go wrong – due to poor social skills\, fear/anxiety issues\, or previous negative experiences. Video examples will be used to help illustrate the discussion. \nWebsite Link:  * Click here to register **

SUMMARY:Webinar - Optimizing Anesthetic Recoveries - Think Anesthesia
DESCRIPTION:Join the Think Anesthesia® live\, interactive webinar\, Optimizing Anesthetic Recoveries\, presented by Dr. Karen Kerr\, BA\, BVSc (Hons)\, MANZCVS on Friday\, June 18 at 10:00 a.m. PT | 12 p.m. CT | 1:00 p.m. ET. \nAnesthetic recoveries are ideally smooth and rapid\, with patients regaining consciousness and ambulation\, and maintaining physiological homeostasis. This session will outline how the preceding phases of anesthesia affect recovery quality\, with guidelines for mitigating the risk of\, recognizing\, and managing rough and prolonged recoveries. \nManagement of the recovery period will be discussed\, with a focus on achieving smooth emergence from anesthesia. Common causes of rough recoveries include emergence delirium\, pain and dysphoria\, each of which will be discussed\, with filmed examples\, risk factors\, identifying characteristics\, and approaches to treatment. Prolonged recoveries are also common\, and their causes and treatments will be covered. \nUpon completion of the course\, participants will be familiar with aspects of the anesthetic plan that affect the recovery period\, and recommended approaches to managing rough and prolonged recoveries. \nThis presentation is RACE approved for 1 CE credit for both veterinarians and technicians. \nFollowing the live presentation\, an on-demand version of this webinar will be available at www.thinkanesthesia.education/on-demand. \nWebsite Link:  https://www.thinkanesthesia.education/live-webinar/2021/06/think-anesthesiar-optimizing-anesthetic-recoveries
