SUMMARY:Webinar - 8/12/21 - Are we there yet? Creating calm\, in and out of the car with Sharon Carroll - FDSA (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:Whether you’re traveling with your pet dog\, or traveling to classes and competitions with your sport dog\, the trip is more pleasant if your dog is relaxed. \nSome dogs\, however\, really struggle to remain calm during travel. They may whine\, pant\, bark\, pace\, spin\, lunge at the windows\, scratch / bite at the crate door\, or just appear restless or uncomfortable. \nIn this webinar we look at all the underlying reasons that can affect your dog’s behavior when traveling. We also discuss behavior modification and management strategies aimed at improving the journey for you and your dog. \nFor many dogs\, these same behaviors don’t stop when the journey ends. They may exit the vehicle with so much emotion and arousal that they are unable to focus on their human. So\, in this webinar we also look at strategies for producing calm behaviors when arriving and setting up at a new venue. \nKey areas covered include:\n• Getting in and out of the vehicle in a relaxed way.\n• Traveling calmly.\n• Producing calm behaviors when arriving and acclimating in new locations.\n• Calm crating / stationing at new venues. \nWEBSITE LINK: https://www.fenzidogsportsacademy.com/index.php/fdsa-calendar

SUMMARY:Webinar - 8/17/21 - Data-Driven Decision Making for Animal Welfare Organizations: Part 1 - NACA/Justice Clearinghouse
DESCRIPTION:In the field of animal welfare\, we have not always been the best at keeping track of data and metrics around the work we do; we are simply focused on getting the job done.  That is all changing\, and in order to justify our budgets\, apply for grants\, seek additional personnel\, etc. we are not being asked to provide data to support our requests.  This presentation will begin the conversation surrounding metrics we can and should be tracking in different areas of our operations\, how to ensure we are getting “clean” data\, and how to begin to apply it. \n  \n\n \n  \nThe National Animal Care & Control Association (NACA) was formed in 1978 for the express purpose of assisting its members to perform their duties in a professional manner. We believe only carefully selected and properly trained animal control personnel can correct community problems resulting from irresponsible animal ownership. NACA’s purpose is to preserve the Human/Animal Bond by insisting on responsible animal ownership. \n\n  \nPresenters:\n> \n\nDr. Josh Fisher has an educational background in population management/medicine\, public health\, veterinary sciences\, informatics\, and healthcare administration.  He has been working in the veterinary medical/animal welfare field for over 15 years holding management roles in private practices\, cooperate practices\, the NCSU College of Veterinary Medicine\, county government\, and now as the Animal Services Director for the City of Charlotte/Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department. \nA strong advocate for professional development and growth in the animal welfare industry\, Josh seeks to involve staff in continued education and training opportunities as well as in cutting edge industry research.  His professional interests focus on disease reduction/prevention\, advanced marketing/placement and intake reduction tactics\, strategic planning\, and staff career development in the area of animal welfare.  His projects include increasing interest of veterinary/veterinary technician students in the animal welfare industry as well as working with community veterinarians to break down barriers\, develop relationships\, and increase involvement in community-focused animal welfare (animal control and sheltering) practices. \nIt is a passion of Josh’s to bring a level of awareness to the animal welfare industry in such a way that young adults and college students make the decision to pursue animal welfare as a profession rather than falling into it by chance. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://www.justiceclearinghouse.com/webinar/data-driven-decision-making-for-animal-welfare-organizations-part-1/

SUMMARY:Webinar - 8/19/21 - Jennifer Kolar - Train the Person in Front of You: Make Your Training Accessible - FDSA (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:We know to train the dog in front of us\, but what about the person? Our human clients\, like their pets\, bring a variety of abilities and skills to the table. In your work with the human end of the leash\, have you considered: \n\nHow you would adjust your training plans and lessons to the needs of people with disabilities?\nHow you could teach a dog to lie down when you can’t get on the floor to lure or when a clicker is too difficult to use?\nHow you might coach someone in a wheelchair on how to potty train their puppy?\nHow you would coach a client who doesn’t have use of their hands and can’t hold a leash?\nHow we can make it so that everyone can train?\n\nThis webinar aims to answer the question of how dog trainers can improve accessibility and accommodations for everyone — be they pet dog owners\, sports enthusiasts or service dog handlers. We begin by diving into different types of disabilities and medical conditions that you may encounter as a trainer and appropriate etiquette when interacting with people with disabilities.  We explore accommodations\, action plans\, and tools for adaptive training to have in mind. Through exercises and scenarios\, you will develop skills to help you work with people with a variety of accessibility needs in creative and innovative ways. The accessibility team at Atlas Assistance Dogs® will help you learn how to meet a client where they are\, recognize what a non-disabled trainer may take for granted\, and discover how to use positive reinforcement in ways you haven’t considered. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://www.fenzidogsportsacademy.com/index.php/self-study/webinars

SUMMARY:Online Event - 8/24/21 - Maddie's Candid Conversation with Dr. Lila Miller - Maddie's Fund
DESCRIPTION:This Maddie’s Candid Conversation is an open\, informal 60-minute conversation and Q+A with Dr. Lila Miller\, DVM\,  a groundbreaking and trailblazing visionary! \nIn 1977\, Dr. Lila Miller was one of the first two African American women to ever graduate from Cornell University’s College of Veterinary Medicine. In a career spanning 42 years\, Dr. Miller transformed the lives of countless pets\, developing the first veterinarian-written guidelines for shelter animal care\, which are now used in shelters across the country to ensure the humane treatment of shelter pets. SUMMARY:Webinar - 8/24/21 - The Captive Wildlife Crisis: Responding to cases involving wild cats - NACA/Justice Clearinghouse
DESCRIPTION:The captive wildlife crisis is a largely unknown and dangerous problem throughout the United States. The private ownership of wildlife including\, but not limited to\, wild cats poses a significant risk to law enforcement officers in various law enforcement agencies. In addition\, limited public knowledge for identifying some wild cat species and hybrids serves as a barrier to properly enforcing the limited laws on the federal and state levels regarding private ownership of wildlife. Tammy Thies of The Wildcat Sanctuary in Sandstone\, Minnesota\, and Tanya Smith of Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge in Eureka Springs\, Arkansas\, work alongside the various law enforcement agencies when captive wild cats must be seized or are willfully surrendered. They will present valuable information for officers who respond to cases when the presence of wild cats (and other exotic animals) is known and when officers encounter captive wildlife including wild cats unexpectedly. In addition\, Ms. Thies and Ms. Smith will discuss identifying wild cat species/hybrids\, relevant laws\, proper response procedures when you encounter a wild cat\, and resources available to you as first responders including transport\, rehoming\, and placement with proper facilities after the seizure of wild cats. \nPresenters \n\n\n\nTanya Smith serves as the President/ Co-Founder of Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge (TCWR). \nThe non-profit organization was formed in 1992 when Tanya and her parents purchased 459 acres 7-miles south of Eureka Springs\, Arkansas with the goal of saving and providing lifetime homes for unwanted and neglected exotic cats. \nTCWR started an innovative college graduate intern program in 1996 and has trained more than 500 biologists and zoologists now employed at zoos\, sanctuaries\, and veterinary clinics around the world. \nTanya currently serves on other Boards of Directors: Turpentine Creek Foundation\, Inc.\, Arvest Community Bank Board\, Arkansas Hospitality Foundation Board\, Northwest Arkansas Tourism Association (NATA)\, and the Rogers-Lowell Area of Chamber of Commerce. \nTanya is an active member on the Rescue and Finance Committee of the Big Cat Sanctuary Alliance (BCSA)\, a member of Eureka Springs\, Bentonville/ Bella Vista\, Rogers/ Lowell\, Springdale\, Fayetteville\, Harrison\, and Branson Chamber of Commerce. \nTanya’s family has been caring for Big Cats since 1978. She is married to Scott Smith\, who works for the refuge as Vice President and together have raised 4 children and has 7 grandchildren. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTammy Thies is the founder of the Wildcat Sanctuary\, a non-profit\, accredited sanctuary that provides a safe home to felid species including\, cougar\, tiger\, lynx and other wild cats in need of shelter. \nThies has a marketing and journalism degree from the University of St. Thomas.  After graduation\, she developed and managed advertising campaigns for clients such as Coca-Cola\, BMW\, Holiday Inn and Timberland. \nShe is a native Minnesotan and during her advertising career became aware of the need for a sanctuary through her exposure to big cats during photo shoots. She learned that\, throughout the United States\, tens of thousands of these animals are privately owned as pets and used as performers or for-profit breeding. \nThies made a mid-life career change to become a voice for these animals.  She began The Wildcat Sanctuary in 1999. Now\, years later\, the Sanctuary houses over 120 residents on 85 acres in Sandstone\, MN.  Animals are not bought\, sold\, bred or traded. Each resident is given every opportunity to behave naturally in a wonderful free-roaming environment and receive the best vet care at the on-site animal hospital. \nThe Wildcat Sanctuary provides educational outreach seminars to educate the public about the captive wildlife crisis across the United States\, as well as supporting legislative efforts banning these practices. \nThies was very instrumental in testifying on behalf of the Minnesota Exotic Animal Law that bans the ownership of dangerous exotic animals as pets. She has assisted local law enforcement\, United States Department of Agriculture and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife on cases involving wild cats. \nThies has appeared as an expert on the captive wildlife crisis across national media outlets such as the History Channel\, Animal Planet and the CNN iReport. \nThe sanctuary is accredited by The American Sanctuary Association\, Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries\, a member of the Big Cat Sanctuary Alliance\, and awarded a 4-star rating by Charity Navigator. The Wildcat Sanctuary is the only big cat sanctuary in the upper Midwest. Tammy serves on the steering committees for the Big Cat Sanctuary Alliance. \n  \n\nWEBSITE LINK:  https://www.justiceclearinghouse.com/webinar/the-captive-wildlife-crisis-responding-to-cases-involving-wild-cats/

SUMMARY:Webinar - 8/25/21 - Investigating and Prosecuting Animal Crimes in Small\, Rural and Tribal Communities (Part 2) - NACA/Justice Clearinghouse
DESCRIPTION:Animal cases can be very complicated and can overwhelm a small or rural law enforcement agency.  This webinar is going to delve into the best investigation techniques on animal abuse and animal fighting cases.  We will explore unique and large-scale animal cases and how to prepare for them.  We will explore how to prosecute in a small or rural jurisdiction and how to convince conservative rural judges to take animal abuse cases seriously. \nPresenters\n \nRichard Samuels has been a deputy in the Spotsylvania County (Virginia) Animal Control Division of the Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s Office for the last 19 years. He has investigated over 200 animal fighting cases — 100 of which were cockfighting investigations. For two years\, Richard worked undercover as a cockfighter\, witnessing over 2\,000 fights. SUMMARY:Online Seminar - 8/25/21 and 8/31/21 - Diversity & Inclusion in the Veterinary Profession: Why It Matters - CVMA
DESCRIPTION:The veterinary profession is one of the least diverse professions in the United States with regard to underrepresented and historically marginalized populations. This webinar will highlight historic and current trends in the veterinary profession. Participants will appreciate why creating more diverse and inclusive veterinary teams is critical to the profession’s endurance and to the people and patients it serves. Participants will gain an understanding of the meaning of popular terminology related to diversity\, equity\, and inclusion (DEI). Dr. Suzie Kovacs will demonstrate how individuals can reflect on their own biases and come to understand that uncomfortable conversations may be a necessary component of progress. Through sharing some of her personal experiences\, Dr. Kovacs hopes to be of benefit to others who are on a similar journey. This webinar will be of interest to those who are new to DEI discussions\, as well as anyone committed to working with others to create a healthier and more robust veterinary profession. \nAttendees can earn 1.5 CEUs. Sponsored by Hill’s Pet Nutrition. \nThis seminar is open to veterinarians\, veterinary technicians\, veterinary hospital staff\, and veterinary students only. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://cvma.net/learning/cvma-ce-programs-2/online-seminar-diversity-august-25-31-2021/
