DESCRIPTION:Whilst knowledge of dog behavior during adolescence arguably exists in the public and professional domain\, the period of adolescence in dogs and other companion animals is vastly understudied within the scientific community. \nAdolescence is a relatively long period of development during which a juvenile becomes an adult and is marked by intense neurological and hormonal changes. Within the domestic dog\, adolescence is typically considered to begin with the onset of pubertal development at around 6 months of age (puberty is thought to begin between 6-9 months in males and 6-16 months of age in females) and continues until behavioral/social maturity is reached. There is no precisely agreed age at which an individual dog can be considered behaviorally mature\, but dogs aged younger than two years have the shortest memory spans and certain trait level behavioral changes still occur between 18-24 months of age in border collie dogs. Therefore\, dogs aged under 2 years of age are likely to still be undergoing adolescent behavioral development. \nThis period of development is likely to be a particularly vulnerable time for dog-owner relationships\, and for shaping the long-term behavior of the developing animal. In this session\, the presenter will provide an overview of the neurological and behavioural changes that mammals undergo during adolescence\, along with highlighting the potential implications. \nAlthough the particular focus of this session will be on dogs\, much of the theory and evidence behind it should be applicable across all mammalian species\, and much of the background provided will be in general terms\, so the session should be applicable for anyone interested simply in mammalian behavior development. \nCEUs: PPAB 1\, CCPDT 1\, IAABC 1\, KPA 1 \n  \nAbout Your Presenter \nDr. Naomi Harvey is a zoologist with a specialty in applied animal behavior and veterinary health and welfare. Since November 2019\, she has been working at the Dogs Trust as a research manager in canine behavior and she holds an honorary position as an associate professor of companion animal behavior and welfare at the University of Nottingham. With a BSc in zoology from Cardiff University and a PhD in applied canine behavior from the University of Nottingham\, Dr. Harvey has a particular specialty in designing and validating methods for securing robust and valid measures of animal behavior from their guardians. \nShe also has expertise in veterinary epidemiology\, having successfully designed and led the Itchy Dog project to investigate the environmental and genetic risk factors for canine atopic dermatitis and its impact on dog behavior. Her research interests lie in improving the evidence base for issues affecting companion animal welfare within the fields of veterinary medicine and clinical animal behavior\, to better inform how we manage and treat the animals in our care. In this highly-interactive session\, we will explore the needs and issues you—as a leader of volunteers—need to plan for and brainstorm strategies for re-engaging volunteers safely while reimagining the roles volunteers play in our organizations to ensure they are best positioned to help us meet our missions. \nJoin your colleagues from animal organizations across the country and beyond for a highly interactive\, collaborative session as we explore what volunteer involvement in the animal welfare field looks like post-pandemic. He received his B.A. in 2004 from Brandeis University in Waltham\, Massachusetts\, and his J.D. in 2009 from Lewis & Clark Law School in Portland\, Oregon. At Lewis & Clark\, Jake was an Associate Editor of the Lewis & Clark Law Review and clerked at the Clackamas County District Attorney’s Office. This is critical everywhere\, yes even for those of us in animal welfare\, in veterinary medicine\, anywhere as global citizens working with animals and the humans who love them. But don’t worry\, there is no perfect here. Everyone makes mistakes and we all will continue to do so. But if we can hone our listening skills and learn to interact with integrity and respect\, we can be part of the way words can change the world. Let’s talk about this and get some practice! \nYour Takeaway:\nIn the ever-evolving world of animal welfare we could all take a moment to reflect on what harm – or good – we might be doing by deciding to use certain words.  We may be so used to certain habits that we don’t even realize what we are saying.  Aimee can help us get some perspective on something many of us have probably never considered. \nAbout Our Speaker:\nAs the new Vice President of Animal Welfare and Veterinary Medicine\, Aimee Christian oversees the Animal Rescue League of Boston’s (ARL) animal welfare and veterinary programs\, including the Animal Care & Adoption Centers in Boston\, Dedham\, and Brewster; Community Operations; Community and Shelter Medicine; Law Enforcement; and Boston Veterinary Care (BVC).  Working alongside the President & CEO\, she ensures that all animal care operations are running smoothly and remain aligned with the organization’s strategic plan. Prior to joining ARL\, Aimee was the Vice President of Community Medicine at the ASPCA. In that role she served communities in New York City\, Los Angeles\, and Miami and worked for nearly 15 years overseeing the ASPCA’s high quality\, high-volume spay/neuter and basic veterinary care programming nationwide. She is a Fellow at the Center for Animals and Public Policy at Tufts University. Aimee received two master’s degrees from Harvard University\, in language and in education.
