Applying these techniques will make life easier for your aging dog. It will also make caring for them easier\, more joyful\, and enriching for both of you. \nAs dogs age\, they slow down just as we do. They typically lose hind-end strength and proprioception. Mental and sensory functioning often decline as well. As the aging process continues\, many dogs lose the ability to function in life’s daily activities\, e.g. going up and down stairs. This loss can be due to a variety of factors\, which we will cover some of. One example is muscle weakness. Weak muscles can be strengthened by doing simple exercises resulting in older dogs being able to function again. How much of canine personality is due to genetics and how much to environment? How do researchers track down genes related to personality? Have any such genes yet been found? Can we expect a genetic test for dog reactivity any time soon? After eleven years working as a computer programmer\, she decided to go back to school to research the causes of behavior problems in dogs. She received her veterinary degree in 2012 from the Tufts Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine in Massachusetts\, where she also received a Master’s degree for her work on stress behaviors in hospitalized dogs. After graduation\, she completed a year-long internship specializing in shelter medicine at the University of Florida Maddie’s Shelter Medicine Program. She received her PhD in genetics at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign\, studying a group of foxes (often known as the “Siberian silver foxes”) which have been bred over many generations to be friendly to humans. She is currently working at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard as a postdoctoral associate\, studying the genetics of behavior in pet dogs through the Darwin’s Ark project and the Working Dogs Project. Her ultimate goal is to find genetic causes of fearfulness in dogs\, to work with behaviorally challenged shelter dogs\, and to help people better understand the science behind dog behavior. She also frequently teaches online classes and webinars about canine genetics and behavior. Jessica lives in Raymond\, NH with her husband and three dogs. Nina is a Certified Animal Cruelty Investigator\, a Certified Animal Welfare Administrator\, and an Animal Control Officer in the Commonwealth of Virginia. DESCRIPTION:Building a successful animal management program from the ground up is challenging at the best of times but throw in the mix a low socio-economic area\, poor trust in AMOs\, limited resources\, and a long history of high enforcement. Understanding the needs of a community\, difficulties in an area as well as taking a multi-agency approach to a pilot animal management program has lead to amazing success for a regional Local Government in Australia. Gaining the trust of the community became the key to creating a successful working relationship. \nCome join Tina Martin and Ann-Marie Plasto to find out about how you could build a holistic approach to animal management programs in low socio-areas with great results. \n  \nWhat you’ll learn: \n\nSummary of current animal management pilot program in a regional Australian town.\nChallenges faced and how they were overcome within the program.\nWhy a multi-agency approach to an animal management program leads to successful outcomes for everyone involved\n\n  \n\n \nThe Australian Institute of Animal Management (AIAM) is the national peak body representing Local Government Animal Management Officers. The AIAM Committee consists of a wide range of professionals engaged in the various aspects of animal management. \nAIAM seeks to support those engaged in the business of animal management\, and the function itself\, by providing training and information\, opportunities for networking and collaboration\, and by encouraging the use of best practice policy and practices. AIAM promotes consistency of legislation\, consultation in the creation of legislation and workplace processes\, and healthy relationships with external stakeholders and the community. AIAM supports cross-sector collaboration and co-design of projects and initiatives. \n  \n\n\n  \nAbout the Presenters: \n\n\nAnn-Marie Plasto joined Cairns Regional Council in 2015 in the small outdated pound facility\, but this never stopped her dreaming of making changes from the moment she stepped into the kennels. Making lead officer within 18months she uses her tertiary studies and skills gained from other facilities in Queensland\, mixed in with some sheer determination to improve the facility for the sake of the animals and the community. Working in other larger shelters\, boarding facilities\, and wildlife parks around the region Ann-Marie has gained a deep understanding of the needs of the community. Although she is still young in her Council career every day is a learning curve working in Local Govt and there is no one better to take up the challenge in this regional Queensland town. \nTina Martin has had over 25 years’ experience in the animal welfare and animal management field. Starting off her career with RSPCA\, she worked in a range of positions from vet nursing to shelter manager all up and down the Queensland Coast in Australia. This diversity of positions and locations for 14 years gave Tina an immense understanding of animal management issues faced by a range of communities across Australia.
