SUMMARY:Webinar - 9/23/21 - Changing Behavior by Arranging Antecedents with Kathy Sdao - Dog iBox (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:Professional animal trainers and behavior consultants sometimes overlook or undervalue Level 2 (Antecedent Arrangements) of the Humane Hierarchy. This six-level progression of behavior-change procedures\, arranged so that the least intrusive\, most positive interventions come first\, was first elucidated by Dr. Susan Friedman in 2010. (See What’s Wrong With This Picture? Effectiveness is Not Enough) It informs the core ethical commitment of several professional animal-training organizations (e.g.\, IAABC\, CCPDT). Yet we may be tempted to “skip ahead” to familiar operant training procedures such as positive reinforcement (Level 3) & differential reinforcement of alternative behaviors (Level 4). Antecedent arrangements (Level 2) suggest we notice and adjust the animal’s environment in ways that facilitate the behaviors we wish to reinforce. It invites us to be creative in changing conditions that precede these behaviors\, with the goal of making learning more effective and efficient. Note that Level 2 is much broader than simply “managing the environment” to prevent problem behaviors from occurring. We’ll look at many specific examples of antecedent arrangements drawn from Kathy’s work with her behavior-consultation clients. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://www.dog-ibox.com/market/catalog/live-webinars/live-webinars-english-c-34/changing-behavior.html

SUMMARY:Webinar - 9/23/21 - Jessica Hekman\, PhD - Stressed Out: Dogs\, Hormones\, and Stress - FDSA (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:What happens in your dog’s brain and body when something scares her? How long can you expect her stress response to last? In this webinar\, Jessica Hekman\, DVM\, PhD\, will talk about the stress response in dogs. She will explain the original evolutionary purpose of the stress response; what the hormones involved in it (like cortisol) do in the body; the difference between acute and chronic stress and the different effects the have on dogs’ health; and what we know about how long it takes the body to clear those hormones. You will definitely learn some cool stuff about how the brain works and what that means for your dog’s ability to focus through the stress of something like a trial environment! \nFee: $19.95 – Registration required PRIOR to scheduled presentation time. \nPlease note: This webinar is back by popular demand. SUMMARY:Webinar - 9/30/21 - Top 3 Solutions to End Doorbell Pandemonium - Nancy Tucker - FDSA (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:The doorbell. Ugh. If anything can cause the most canine chaos with the least amount of effort\, it’s the common doorbell or a knock at the door. That simple musical chime (or knock-knock) triggers barking\, racing through the house\, and crowding the entrance. Even when the sound just comes from the TV! \nWhat follows is often the addition of human voices shouting over the noise in an unsuccessful attempt to quiet things down. \nThere’s a better way. No shouting\, no diving for the mute button on the remote\, no wading through barking\, hopping dogs at the door. \nIn this webinar we’ll cover the top 3 approaches to curbing the chaotic response to doorbells or knocking\, with the aim to restore peace and calm in your home\, even when the UPS driver shows up. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://www.fenzidogsportsacademy.com/index.php/self-study/webinars

SUMMARY:Webinar - 10/6/21 - Who Controls the Training Session - You or the Animal? Presented by Dr. Karolina Westlund - PPG (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:CEUs: PPAB 1\, CCPDT (pending)\, IAABC (pending)\, KPA (pending) \nMany animal trainers\, veterinarians and pet owners highlight the importance of controlling animals. Controlling them\, as in restricting the animals’ movement\, their choices and their opportunities to control their environment through their behavior. \nSometimes you have to\, for safety reasons. But often you don’t – and more often than you might think. Actually\, the trend in modern animal training is to deliberately and strategically shift control from the handler to the animal\, while still staying safe. Giving control to animals enables us to better understand their quirks and preferences\, not to mention reducing fear and improving welfare. In this session\, the presenter will walk through a formal training session and discuss all the possible ways of handing control to the animal during training. For instance: \n\nDoes the animal have control when\, where and with whom a training session starts?\nWhen ending it?\nWhen individual trials within a session start (so called start buttons).\nWhich behavior to work on?\nCan he say\, “No\, actually\, I changed my mind?”\nCan he choose his reinforcer?\n\nThese questions and more will be discussed. Some might say it’s preposterous to allow the animal to dictate the training session. But that’s not what the presenter is saying you should do. After all\, you have options\, too\, and one of them is to choose when to hand over control to the animal – and when not to. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://petprofessionalguild.com/event-4300600
