SUMMARY:Webinar - 10/28/20 - Too Hot to Handle – Understanding and Working With the “Reactive” Dog - Dr. Christopher Pachel - Dog-iBox (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:Arousal is necessary for normal day to day activity as well as for survival. We also know that arousal levels are supposed to change in response to environmental and social pressures\, and that arousal can affect information processing and the modulation of fight/flight responses. Unfortunately\, not all arousal regulation systems are created or developed equally! This presentation will focus on those dogs that are easily over-stimulated by sensory information\, tend to over-react to their surroundings\, and have a difficult time recovering or returning to a normal resting level of arousal. Information specific to the underlying neurological basis for this pattern\, strategies for impacting the development of impulse control and arousal regulation throughout development\, as well as behavior modification and medication intervention strategies will be addressed and discussed. \n  \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://www.dog-ibox.com/market/catalog/live-webinars/live-webinars-english-c-34/too-hot-to-handle-understanding-and-working-with-the-reactive-dog.html

SUMMARY:Weekly Call - Monday Mornings - Connect With Other Animal Shelter Professionals - Maddie's Fund
DESCRIPTION:Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic\, animal shelter workers\, volunteers and animal welfare leaders from across the country have been meeting every Monday morning at 7am PT/10am ET to discuss protocols\, ideas\, obstacles they’re facing and more.     \nNEW TIME as of 9/23/20 – 8 AM PT\, 11 AM ET. \nLed by Kristen Hassen-Auerbach\, Director of Pima Animal Care in Tucson\, AZ\, these calls have provided an opportunity for people to connect that otherwise may not have even met.    \n“The purpose of these calls is simple – maintain connection among shelter professionals\, provide support and comradery\, and share science-based news and information along with emerging best practices in animal welfare\,” Hassen-Auerbach says. “These calls are always lively and interesting and we’re not afraid to debate and share different perspectives from the attendees. You can take center stage and share your thoughts and ideas in front of several hundred of your colleagues or quietly drink your morning coffee and listen in.”  \nFor many\, these calls have been an invaluable resource. “When the subject of DEI (Diversity\, Equity and Inclusion) came to the front of all of our minds\, the calls adapted and we had a space to again learn from one another\,” said Emily Klehm from South Suburban Humane Society in Chicago Heights\, IL. “The calls have been my go-to source for grant information\, statistics and trends. I’ve also been able to identify and connect to colleagues working on the same issues in similar communities.”  \nDr. Ellen Jefferson\, Executive Director at Austin Pets Alive! adds\, “We hear from people in the industry who have important information related to COVID\, new programming and research.  This is information you can’t possibly get in your day to day work at your local shelter.”  \nIf you’re a shelter professional\, dedicated volunteer or run a rescue organization\, we want you to join us! Bookmark the link below and we will see you on Monday! \nNote: The calls are recorded so if you can’t make it\, you can listen in later. If you haven’t already\, join the Facebook group to access the link to recorded calls and to connect with others on there. \nMONDAYS:  8:00 AM to 9:00 AM PT – new time \nJoin Zoom Meeting (same link as before)https://us02web.zoom.us/j/607482466?pwd=dWgwUDhUeVMzb01FcHNkc3dsUGlGUT09\n\nNEW Passcode: 249477\n\nMeeting ID: 607 482 466\n\nOne tap mobile+16699006833\,\,607482466#\,\,\,\,\,\,0#\,\,249477# US (San Jose)+12532158782\,\,607482466#\,\,\,\,\,\,0#\,\,249477# US (Tacoma)Dial by your location    +1 669 900 6833 US (San Jose)    +1 253 215 8782 US (Tacoma)    +1 346 248 7799 US (Houston)    +1 646 558 8656 US (New York)    +1 301 715 8592 US (Germantown)    +1 312 626 6799 US (Chicago)Meeting ID: 607 482 466Passcode: 249477Find your local number: https://us02web.zoom.us/u/kfjtq4DTY\n\nMEETING LINK:  https://us02web.zoom.us/j/607482466?pwd=dWgwUDhUeVMzb01FcHNkc3dsUGlGUT09

SUMMARY:CASCAR Zoom Call for California Shelters - 10/22/20 - Villain\, Victim\, or Hero Presentation by Billions Institute Leader Becky Margiotta - CASCAR - UC Davis KSMP
DESCRIPTION:On a scale from one to ten\, how open are you to learning something new?  \nCuriosity and humility are a huge part of leading change. And while most of us love to learn and believe we’re completely open to discovery\, the truth is we all take on different personas that take us out of learning without us even being aware that we’ve “turned off” learning mode. \nJoin us for a different kind of CASCAR (that’s right\, this is new territory for us!)\, where we’ll go on a journey with one of Dr. Hurley’s mentors\, the incredible Becky Margiotta (100\,000 Homes Campaign\, Skid Row School for Unleashing Large-Scale Change\, Billion Institute)\, to find out which of the three main personas\, hero\, victim\, villain\, like to ride with us to work from time to time. (Don’t be shy\, we all have uninvited carpoolers.) \nMost importantly\, we’ll learn how to recognize when they are showing up and what to do with them when they do. \nBring your staff\, bring your board\, bring your cat. We’re on a mission to move barriers out of the way of progress and\, sometimes\, that starts with a little self-discovery. \nTo Join the Zoom Meeting \nhttps://sheltermedicine.zoom.us/j/900364297?pwd=WndTUnlidXhqaStMSjNZdlJDVDg0QT09 <https://sheltermedicine.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=a75971c5c2718a53106f9e6ea&id=b124ae0ef7&e=268f362992> \nMeeting ID: 900 364 297 \nPasscode: together \nOne tap mobile \n+16699006833\,\,900364297# US (San Jose) \nDial by your location \n+1 669 900 6833 US (San Jose) \n+1 346 248 7799 US (Houston) \n+1 253 215 8782 US (Tacoma) \n+1 646 876 9923 US (New York) \n+1 301 715 8592 US (Germantown) \n+1 312 626 6799 US (Chicago) \nMeeting ID: 900 364 297 \nFind your local number: https://sheltermedicine.zoom.us/u/acRTFiO9ex <https://sheltermedicine.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=a75971c5c2718a53106f9e6ea&id=4c60d2305a&e=268f362992>

SUMMARY:Online Course - Starts 10/18/20 - Feline Behavior Solutions: Teaching Foundation Behaviors for Modifying Behavior - IAABC (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:Feline Behavior Solutions: Teaching Foundation Behaviors for Modifying Behavior\n\n\n\n\n\nDate\nRegister\n\n\nCourse Begins: October 18th\, 2020\nDuration: 5 weeks\nInstructor: Katenna Jones\, ACAAB\, CCBC\nRegister Now\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Course\nModification of any problematic or unwanted behavior requires mechanical skill\, knowledge of species-specific behavior\, and experience with a variety of strategies and techniques. This course will provide opportunities for anyone who works with cats to gain all of that\, and more. Each of the five weeks is packed with information that can be directly and immediately applied to a variety of cat behavior cases\, from aggression to anxiety and from fighting to fear. This course was created for cat behavior consultants who are looking to take on more advanced cases\, or cat lovers simply looking to teach cats specific skills. Content is relevant to anyone who works with cats in a professional\, volunteer\, or personal capacity. \nRequired Course Materials\n\nAccess to at least one cat throughout the duration of the course that\n\n\n\nis social and friendly\nhas not been previously\, formally trained\nis food\, touch\, praise\, or toy motivated\n\n\n\n** \nAccess to multiple cats is recommended as a “backup” in case your primary isn’t feeling well or isn’t in the mood to train\n\nAbility to record\, trim\, and upload videos with audio of cat training sessions\nClicker (iClick recommended)\nTarget stick (to be discussed in week 1\, can be made or purchased – check out example here)\nCat rewards (to be discussed in week 1)\n\nWeekly Content\nWeek 1 – Tools\, Techniques\, and Targets \nWe begin this course with a review of various tools\, techniques\, and tips that can be useful when addressing feline behavior problems. Students will establish a baseline understanding of what could be in their toolbox\, ideas for determining reinforcers\, determining rate of food delivery\, and more. This knowledge will be applied as students learn how to target train a cat using clicker training\, discuss applications\, and practice target training with their cats. \nHomework: \n– Identify which rewards your cat prefers\, the marker your cat is comfortable with\, and define that marker for your cat (pair with reward). \n– Post a video of one of your training sessions and discuss what you did well and what could use improvement. \n– Post a positive comment on at least one fellow student’s training video. \nWeek #2 – Improving Mechanical Skill \nThis week students will learn about setting criteria\, adjusting rates of reinforcement\, assessing progress\, DRI/DRO/DRA\, and more. \nHomework: \n– Post video of target training your cat\, in which you repeatedly make the same mistake. Discuss the mistake\, how you felt when you “caught” it\, and how you plan to move forward. \n– Post a video of target training your cat\, in which you are no longer making the mistake. \n– Post a positive comment on at least one fellow student’s training video. \nWeek #3 – Building Toward Useful Behaviors \nThis week\, students will learn how to take target training to the next level and begin teaching cats skills that can be applied to the real world. \nHomework: \n– Post a video of you training the skill you selected. Discuss why you chose this behavior and what kinds of problem behaviors you think it might be useful for. \n– Review at least one fellow student’s training video and discuss what kinds of problem behaviors you think it might be useful for. \nWeek #4 – Achieving Fluency \nThis week\, students will learn to assist their cats in becoming fluent in the behaviors they have been working on throughout this course. Focus should be on setting realistic criteria\, determining what components of fluency are important\, and tackling one component at a time. Components to be considered include the “3 D’s\,” “PaLS\,” and stimulus control. \nHomework: \n– Post a “before” video of your cat learning the skill you chose early on\, as well as an “after” video of the same skill once you began addressing fluency. \n– Review at least one fellow student’s training videos and help come up with ideas for how they might help the cat to become more fluent or comment on a component of the training that impressed you. \nWeek #5 – Critical Self-Assessment \nThis week\, students will critically self-assess their work throughout this course to identify where they excelled\, where they succeeded\, and where they could have been done better. It is important for consultants to constantly reassess their process throughout each case to ensure they are working at an appropriate pace for the client AND for the cat\, have realistic expectations\, are not setting criteria too high nor too low\, are able to adjust and adapt as needed. \nHomework: \nDiscuss (in a video or in writing) what you are most proud of having achieved in this course\, what you need to work on the most\, and what plans you have for being more successful in the future. \nRecommended Supplemental Materials\n\nWhat is My Cat Saying? SUMMARY:Online Event - 10/15/20 - The Love Affair That Changed America: Pet Nation - The Bridge Club
DESCRIPTION:Veterinary medicine continues to evolve because we’ve become a pet nation. This is a conversation on how we got where we are today.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this Event\n\n\nIn the last 20 years pets have gone from living in the backyard to sleeping on our beds\, and now show up outside of the home in every corner of America. Pet Nation tells the story of this seismic shift and the economic\, media\, legal\, political\, and social dramas springing from this cultural transformation. \nSince 1998 the pet population in the U.S. has almost doubled — about two-thirds of the country now owns a pet. No longer left to wander the neighborhood\, dogs and cats eat special food\, get individualized medical attention\, and even fly in the cabin. \nAs founder of the Animal Policy Group\, Mark Cushing gives us an inside look at the rise of Pet Nation\, tracking the myriad ways pets are adopted (a “Canine Freedom Train” runs south to north)\, reporting on pet rights legislation (and the unseen problems that come with elevating their status)\, revealing the truth about large scale breeders (many of whom have been wrongly targeted)\, and discovering that despite what many organizations would have us believe\, there is a shortage of dogs. \nIn this rare Bridge Club discussion\, we get to understand how Lassie did play a role in changing how pets are treated and more! Come join author\, Mark Cushing\, as we take the Pet Nation journey. \nThis book is currently for pre-order at Pre-order link: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0593083865?tag=randohouseinc39867-20 \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWEBSITE LINK:  https://www.eventbrite.com/e/pet-nation-the-love-affair-that-changed-america-tickets-116250421139

SUMMARY:Webinar - 10/15/20 - Myths and Perceived Barriers to Separation Anxiety Success - Malena DeMartini - FDSA (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:Date: Thursday\, October 15\, 2020\nTime: 3pm Pacific Time (Click here for time at FDSA (Pacific Time).\nFee: $19.95 – Registration required PRIOR to scheduled presentation time. \nThis webinar will go into detail about several of the myths and perceived barriers that exist surrounding the ability to be successful with a separation anxiety protocol. Understanding the separation anxiety process better through this webinar will open up doors\, and further busting some myths will help us elevate separation anxiety training to the status it deserves. We will reveal considerable data about the current research in addition to reviewing single study design. \n \nMalena DeMartini-Price is renowned in the dog training world for her expertise in dog separation anxiety issues. She is the author of the book Treating Separation Anxiety in Dogs and has contributed articles on separation anxiety to multiple publications such as the Association of Professional Dog Trainers’ (APDT) Chronicle of the Dog\, Pet Professional Guild’s (PPG) Barks From the Guild\, and various national magazines such as The Bark. She lectures on SA at professional dog training workshops and conferences around the world\, including everything from large professional conferences to small venues. She also has been interviewed widely on this topic and multiple videos and podcasts have been produced. Malena is an honors graduate of the esteemed  Academy for Dog Trainers\, where she studied under Jean Donaldson\, and is a member of the APDT\, the Pet Professionals Guild\, and the International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants. \nMalena has focused exclusively on SA since 2001\, working many hundreds of cases and constantly innovating to find better ways to treat the condition and support clients. Her particular strengths lie in reading the subtleties of dog body language and guiding owners patiently and with great enthusiasm through the gentle process of healing their dogs. \nToday\, her practice is split between overseeing a team of the top SA trainers in the world and continuing to educate trainers\, veterinarians\, and dog owners to better treat SA\, in order to help the most number of dogs and humans possible overcome this agonizing issue. In addition to writing and lecturing\, Malena runs a certification program for accomplished dog professionals looking to hone their SA skills and also has produced an online self-paced course for dog owners. \nMalena lives in Northern California with her husband Kevin—also a certified dog trainer—their dog Tini DeMartini\, and a myriad of local separation anxiety dog-friends who occasionally hang out while completing their training. \nhttps://malenademartini.com/ \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://www.fenzidogsportsacademy.com/index.php/self-study/webinars
