SUMMARY:Webinar - 8/25/21 - Investigating and Prosecuting Animal Crimes in Small\, Rural and Tribal Communities (Part 2) - NACA/Justice Clearinghouse
DESCRIPTION:Animal cases can be very complicated and can overwhelm a small or rural law enforcement agency.  This webinar is going to delve into the best investigation techniques on animal abuse and animal fighting cases.  We will explore unique and large-scale animal cases and how to prepare for them.  We will explore how to prosecute in a small or rural jurisdiction and how to convince conservative rural judges to take animal abuse cases seriously. \nPresenters\n \nRichard Samuels has been a deputy in the Spotsylvania County (Virginia) Animal Control Division of the Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s Office for the last 19 years. He has investigated over 200 animal fighting cases — 100 of which were cockfighting investigations. For two years\, Richard worked undercover as a cockfighter\, witnessing over 2\,000 fights. His experience in the field has enabled him to testify as an expert witness on cockfighting numerous times in the Commonwealth and federal courts. \n  \n\nMichelle Welch is a Senior Assistant Attorney General in the Virginia Attorney General’s Office.  She is the Director of the Animal Law Unit at the Attorney General’s Office.  She is charged with taking all animal law questions in Virginia.  She is called on by agencies all over the Commonwealth to act as a special prosecutor in animal cruelty and animal fighting cases.  Ms. Welch has also been appointed a Special Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Virginia to aid in animal fighting prosecutions. \nMs. Welch frequently gives advice to law enforcement authorities and prosecutors all over Virginia\, the nation and internationally.   She trains prosecutors\, animal control and law enforcement officers on the state of Virginia animal law and testified before a U.S. Congressional Caucus examining the enforcement of animal laws and the cooperation between state and federal partners.  She is a speaker at many conferences including Virginia Animal Control Association and the Association of Prosecuting Attorneys’ National Animal Cruelty Conference. \n\nWEBSITE LINK:  https://www.justiceclearinghouse.com/webinar/investigating-and-prosecuting-animal-crimes-in-small-rural-and-tribal-communities-part-2/

SUMMARY:Online Seminar - 8/25/21 and 8/31/21 - Diversity & Inclusion in the Veterinary Profession: Why It Matters - CVMA
DESCRIPTION:The veterinary profession is one of the least diverse professions in the United States with regard to underrepresented and historically marginalized populations. This webinar will highlight historic and current trends in the veterinary profession. Participants will appreciate why creating more diverse and inclusive veterinary teams is critical to the profession’s endurance and to the people and patients it serves. Participants will gain an understanding of the meaning of popular terminology related to diversity\, equity\, and inclusion (DEI). Dr. Suzie Kovacs will demonstrate how individuals can reflect on their own biases and come to understand that uncomfortable conversations may be a necessary component of progress. Through sharing some of her personal experiences\, Dr. Kovacs hopes to be of benefit to others who are on a similar journey. This webinar will be of interest to those who are new to DEI discussions\, as well as anyone committed to working with others to create a healthier and more robust veterinary profession. \nAttendees can earn 1.5 CEUs. Sponsored by Hill’s Pet Nutrition. \nThis seminar is open to veterinarians\, veterinary technicians\, veterinary hospital staff\, and veterinary students only. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://cvma.net/learning/cvma-ce-programs-2/online-seminar-diversity-august-25-31-2021/

SUMMARY:Webinar - 8/26/21 - Managing Chronic Pain in Cats Following P3 Amputation - Fear Free
DESCRIPTION:Cats’ paws and toes play a critical role in their lives. Sometimes\, however\, we see cats in our practices who have had their P3s amputated. These cats\, no matter how carefully their surgeries were performed\, are subjected to the same nervous system aberrations that occur in humans post-amputation\, which can result in chronic maladaptive\, neuropathic pain in up to 80% of patients. \nIn this session\, Robin Downing\, DVM\, MS\, DAAPM\, DACVSMR\, CVPP\, CCRP\, will explore ways to “unwind” the peripheral and central sensitization that occurs in the wake of P3 amputation\, both in the feet\, and downstream from altered biomechanics. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://fearfreepets.com/resources/webinars/

SUMMARY:Webinar - 9/2/21 - Risk Assessment of Aggression Cases - Dog iBox (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:Veterinarians and behavior professionals are frequently faced with questions about aggressive behaviors that may include biting\, scratching\, lunging\, or threatening postures. As with other behavioral questions\, it is rare for there to be a single “right” answer to a question\, or a “one size fits all” solution to the problem that is occurring. This presentation will discuss risk factors that affect the likelihood of achieving a safe and successful outcome for these patients. Strategies for approaching topics such as rehoming or humane euthanasia will also be covered. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://www.dog-ibox.com/market/catalog/live-webinars/live-webinars-english-c-34/risk-assessment-of-aggression-cases.html
