SUMMARY:Webinar - 8/3/21 - Did They Actually Live Happily Ever After? Debunking Translocation Myths - NACA/Justice Clearinghouse
DESCRIPTION:It’s commonly thought that removing wild animals from our backyards and neighborhoods and releasing them into seemingly suitable habitat miles away is a humane approach for solving conflicts with wildlife. But is it actually? This webinar will delve into what truly happens to wild animals after they’re trapped and moved out of the home ranges they are familiar with and into unknown habitat. We will also discuss strategies that offer sound alternatives to capture and removal. \n  \n\n \n  \nThe National Animal Care & Control Association (NACA) was formed in 1978 for the express purpose of assisting its members to perform their duties in a professional manner. We believe only carefully selected and properly trained animal control personnel can correct community problems resulting from irresponsible animal ownership. NACA’s purpose is to preserve the Human/Animal Bond by insisting on responsible animal ownership. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n \nFounded in 1954\, the Humane Society of the United States and its affiliates around the globe fight the big fights to end suffering for all animals. Together with millions of supporters\, the HSUS takes on puppy mills\, factory farms\, trophy hunts\, animal testing and other cruel industries\, and together with its affiliates\, rescues and provides direct care for over 100\,000 animals every year. The HSUS works on reforming corporate policy\, improving and enforcing laws and elevating public awareness on animal issues. \n  \n\n\nPresenters:\n \nDave Pauli started his animal career in 1979 by opening a wildlife rescue business in Madison\, Wisconsin called Humane Animal Controls\, Inc.    Since that time he also served as a Superintendent of Animal Control (Billings Animal Shelter)\, Director of bi-county Humane Society in Eastern Washington (Tri-Cities) and for the past 29 years as a field responder/director for The Humane Society of The United States. \nDave has responded to domestic animal/exotic/wild animal projects in all 50 states and two dozen countries. Dave currently responds to natural disasters\, major cruelty and hoarding cases\, and participates in Chemical immobilization\, and immunocontraception projects for deer and horses. He also participates in volume capture projects for prairie dogs\, feral dogs and cats\, and many other species. He also supports and advises all HSUS Wildlife\, Animal Rescue Team\, Humane Society International and the Wildlife Land Trust teams with field projects or programs.  He is an HSUS point person on Wild Pigs\, Prairie Dogs\, Turtles and Tortoises\, Florida Gopher Tortoises\, Trapping Issues and Wildlife Contraception. Dave serves on the boards of six NGO’s and serves on the USDA Wild Pig Task Force and Montana Fish Wildlife & Parks Species Classification and Trapping Advisory committees. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://www.justiceclearinghouse.com/webinar/did-they-actually-live-happily-ever-after-debunking-translocation-myths/

SUMMARY:Webinar - 8/9/21 - MAC 2021 Webinar Series - Words Matter - Masachusetts Animal Coalition
DESCRIPTION:Words Matter:\nThe words we choose to say are the ways we represent ourselves.  These words matter. Both our words and our nonverbal actions hold a lot of power\, more than we probably even realize. Words are so important because they can begin to shape how an individual actually views themselves and the world. Being intentional about the words we choose involves being a practitioner of careful\, thoughtful and deliberate positive communication. This is critical everywhere\, yes even for those of us in animal welfare\, in veterinary medicine\, anywhere as global citizens working with animals and the humans who love them. But don’t worry\, there is no perfect here. Everyone makes mistakes and we all will continue to do so. But if we can hone our listening skills and learn to interact with integrity and respect\, we can be part of the way words can change the world. Let’s talk about this and get some practice! \nYour Takeaway:\nIn the ever-evolving world of animal welfare we could all take a moment to reflect on what harm – or good – we might be doing by deciding to use certain words.  We may be so used to certain habits that we don’t even realize what we are saying.  Aimee can help us get some perspective on something many of us have probably never considered. \nAbout Our Speaker:\nAs the new Vice President of Animal Welfare and Veterinary Medicine\, Aimee Christian oversees the Animal Rescue League of Boston’s (ARL) animal welfare and veterinary programs\, including the Animal Care & Adoption Centers in Boston\, Dedham\, and Brewster; Community Operations; Community and Shelter Medicine; Law Enforcement; and Boston Veterinary Care (BVC).  Working alongside the President & CEO\, she ensures that all animal care operations are running smoothly and remain aligned with the organization’s strategic plan. Prior to joining ARL\, Aimee was the Vice President of Community Medicine at the ASPCA. In that role she served communities in New York City\, Los Angeles\, and Miami and worked for nearly 15 years overseeing the ASPCA’s high quality\, high-volume spay/neuter and basic veterinary care programming nationwide. She is a Fellow at the Center for Animals and Public Policy at Tufts University. Aimee received two master’s degrees from Harvard University\, in language and in education. Her areas of expertise are in strategy\, coaching/mentoring\, change management\, and process improvement.  She is deeply committed to health equity for underserved animals and humans\, and believes that the future of animal welfare is community-based.  Originally from New York City\, Aimee lives in Concord\, Massachusetts with her family\, her cats\, and a flock of hens\, and is a writer in her spare time.  She is thrilled to be part of ARL both because its mission is so closely aligned with her passion\, and because she sees it as an honor to give back to the communities in her adopted hometown of Boston. \nWEBSITE LINK:  http://events.constantcontact.com/register/event?llr=dmv5lydab&oeidk=a07ei8sjs704a4938e9

SUMMARY:Webinar - 8/12/21 - Are we there yet? Creating calm\, in and out of the car with Sharon Carroll - FDSA (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:Whether you’re traveling with your pet dog\, or traveling to classes and competitions with your sport dog\, the trip is more pleasant if your dog is relaxed. \nSome dogs\, however\, really struggle to remain calm during travel. They may whine\, pant\, bark\, pace\, spin\, lunge at the windows\, scratch / bite at the crate door\, or just appear restless or uncomfortable. \nIn this webinar we look at all the underlying reasons that can affect your dog’s behavior when traveling. We also discuss behavior modification and management strategies aimed at improving the journey for you and your dog. \nFor many dogs\, these same behaviors don’t stop when the journey ends. They may exit the vehicle with so much emotion and arousal that they are unable to focus on their human. So\, in this webinar we also look at strategies for producing calm behaviors when arriving and setting up at a new venue. \nKey areas covered include:\n• Getting in and out of the vehicle in a relaxed way.\n• Traveling calmly.\n• Producing calm behaviors when arriving and acclimating in new locations.\n• Calm crating / stationing at new venues. \nWEBSITE LINK: https://www.fenzidogsportsacademy.com/index.php/fdsa-calendar

SUMMARY:Webinar - 8/17/21 - Data-Driven Decision Making for Animal Welfare Organizations: Part 1 - NACA/Justice Clearinghouse
DESCRIPTION:In the field of animal welfare\, we have not always been the best at keeping track of data and metrics around the work we do; we are simply focused on getting the job done.  That is all changing\, and in order to justify our budgets\, apply for grants\, seek additional personnel\, etc. we are not being asked to provide data to support our requests.  This presentation will begin the conversation surrounding metrics we can and should be tracking in different areas of our operations\, how to ensure we are getting “clean” data\, and how to begin to apply it. \n\n  \nPresenters:\n> \n\nDr. Josh Fisher has an educational background in population management/medicine\, public health\, veterinary sciences\, informatics\, and healthcare administration.  He has been working in the veterinary medical/animal welfare field for over 15 years holding management roles in private practices\, cooperate practices\, the NCSU College of Veterinary Medicine\, county government\, and now as the Animal Services Director for the City of Charlotte/Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department. \nA strong advocate for professional development and growth in the animal welfare industry\, Josh seeks to involve staff in continued education and training opportunities as well as in cutting edge industry research.  His professional interests focus on disease reduction/prevention\, advanced marketing/placement and intake reduction tactics\, strategic planning\, and staff career development in the area of animal welfare.  His projects include increasing interest of veterinary/veterinary technician students in the animal welfare industry as well as working with community veterinarians to break down barriers\, develop relationships\, and increase involvement in community-focused animal welfare (animal control and sheltering) practices. \nIt is a passion of Josh’s to bring a level of awareness to the animal welfare industry in such a way that young adults and college students make the decision to pursue animal welfare as a profession rather than falling into it by chance. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://www.justiceclearinghouse.com/webinar/data-driven-decision-making-for-animal-welfare-organizations-part-1/

SUMMARY:Webinar - 8/17/21 - Update on the Canine Ehrlichiosis epidemic in Northern Australia - Getting 2 Zero
DESCRIPTION:Canine ehrlichiosis is a serious\, tick-transmitted disease of dogs. Until 2020 Australia was free of this disease due to stringent pre-import screening of dogs coming into Australia. Since its initial identification in northern WA\, locally acquired cases have been diagnosed throughout the NT\, northern WA and northern SA\, with cases also identified in dogs travelling from these regions to NSW\, Qld and Victoria. This presentation will provide some background to the disease and its vector tick\, an update on the number of cases reported\, the signs displayed by infected dogs\, and the strategies needed to manage canine ehrlichiosis. \nPresenters \nProfessor Peter Irwin\, BVetMed\, PhD\, FANZCVS\, MRCVS \nPeter graduated in veterinary science from the Royal Veterinary College\, London University in 1982 and has a PhD from James Cook University (1991) for studies into canine babesiosis in Australia.  He is a Fellow of the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists (Canine Medicine). Peter has worked in academia in Australia and overseas for more than 25 years as a teacher of companion animal medicine and as a researcher in the fields of veterinary parasitology and medical microbiology. He is an internationally recognised expert in vector-borne diseases and is a director of the Vector- and Water Borne Pathogens Research Group(the Cryptick Laboratory) at Murdoch University.  His research concerns tick-borne infections of companion animals\, wildlife and humans in Australia.  Peter is currently appointed  Emeritus Professor at Murdoch University. \nDr Bonny Cumming – BVSc\, MVS \nBonny is a veterinarian and Program Manager -Strategic Delivery for Animal Management in Rural and Remote Indigenous Communities – a national not-for-profit organisation that coordinates veterinary and education programs in rural and remote Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. \nBonny’s role with AMRRIC is diverse and includes establishing and managing strategic partnerships and projects\, monitoring and evaluation\, managing the development of the AMRRIC App\, and policy and protocol development. \nFor the last 13 months\, Ehrlichiosis has been a huge part of Bonny’s role. On behalf of AMRRIC and the remote Indigenous communities that they service\, Bonny has been raising awareness of the impacts of Ehrlichiosis to all levels of government\, as well as relevant community-based stakeholders. Bonny has been leading the AMRRIC team to develop a range of education resources about this new disease\, and is actively involved with ongoing government responses to this disease. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://www.g2z.org.au/g2z-webinars-and-online-events.html
