We believe only carefully selected and properly trained animal control personnel can correct community problems resulting from irresponsible animal ownership. DESCRIPTION:Canine ehrlichiosis is a serious\, tick-transmitted disease of dogs. Until 2020 Australia was free of this disease due to stringent pre-import screening of dogs coming into Australia. Since its initial identification in northern WA\, locally acquired cases have been diagnosed throughout the NT\, northern WA and northern SA\, with cases also identified in dogs travelling from these regions to NSW\, Qld and Victoria. This presentation will provide some background to the disease and its vector tick\, an update on the number of cases reported\, the signs displayed by infected dogs\, and the strategies needed to manage canine ehrlichiosis. \nPresenters \nProfessor Peter Irwin\, BVetMed\, PhD\, FANZCVS\, MRCVS \nPeter graduated in veterinary science from the Royal Veterinary College\, London University in 1982 and has a PhD from James Cook University (1991) for studies into canine babesiosis in Australia.  He is a Fellow of the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists (Canine Medicine). Peter has worked in academia in Australia and overseas for more than 25 years as a teacher of companion animal medicine and as a researcher in the fields of veterinary parasitology and medical microbiology. He is an internationally recognised expert in vector-borne diseases and is a director of the Vector- and Water Borne Pathogens Research Group(the Cryptick Laboratory) at Murdoch University.  His research concerns tick-borne infections of companion animals\, wildlife and humans in Australia.  Peter is currently appointed  Emeritus Professor at Murdoch University. \nDr Bonny Cumming – BVSc\, MVS \nBonny is a veterinarian and Program Manager -Strategic Delivery for Animal Management in Rural and Remote Indigenous Communities – a national not-for-profit organisation that coordinates veterinary and education programs in rural and remote Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. \nBonny’s role with AMRRIC is diverse and includes establishing and managing strategic partnerships and projects\, monitoring and evaluation\, managing the development of the AMRRIC App\, and policy and protocol development. \nFor the last 13 months\, Ehrlichiosis has been a huge part of Bonny’s role. On behalf of AMRRIC and the remote Indigenous communities that they service\, Bonny has been raising awareness of the impacts of Ehrlichiosis to all levels of government\, as well as relevant community-based stakeholders. DESCRIPTION:The captive wildlife crisis is a largely unknown and dangerous problem throughout the United States. The private ownership of wildlife including\, but not limited to\, wild cats poses a significant risk to law enforcement officers in various law enforcement agencies. In addition\, limited public knowledge for identifying some wild cat species and hybrids serves as a barrier to properly enforcing the limited laws on the federal and state levels regarding private ownership of wildlife. Tammy Thies of The Wildcat Sanctuary in Sandstone\, Minnesota\, and Tanya Smith of Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge in Eureka Springs\, Arkansas\, work alongside the various law enforcement agencies when captive wild cats must be seized or are willfully surrendered. They will present valuable information for officers who respond to cases when the presence of wild cats (and other exotic animals) is known and when officers encounter captive wildlife including wild cats unexpectedly. In addition\, Ms. Thies and Ms. Smith will discuss identifying wild cat species/hybrids\, relevant laws\, proper response procedures when you encounter a wild cat\, and resources available to you as first responders including transport\, rehoming\, and placement with proper facilities after the seizure of wild cats. \nPresenters \n\n\n\nTanya Smith serves as the President/ Co-Founder of Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge (TCWR). \nThe non-profit organization was formed in 1992 when Tanya and her parents purchased 459 acres 7-miles south of Eureka Springs\, Arkansas with the goal of saving and providing lifetime homes for unwanted and neglected exotic cats. \nTCWR started an innovative college graduate intern program in 1996 and has trained more than 500 biologists and zoologists now employed at zoos\, sanctuaries\, and veterinary clinics around the world. \nTanya currently serves on other Boards of Directors: Turpentine Creek Foundation\, Inc.\, Arvest Community Bank Board\, Arkansas Hospitality Foundation Board\, Northwest Arkansas Tourism Association (NATA)\, and the Rogers-Lowell Area of Chamber of Commerce. \nTanya is an active member on the Rescue and Finance Committee of the Big Cat Sanctuary Alliance (BCSA)\, a member of Eureka Springs\, Bentonville/ Bella Vista\, Rogers/ Lowell\, Springdale\, Fayetteville\, Harrison\, and Branson Chamber of Commerce. \nTanya’s family has been caring for Big Cats since 1978. She is married to Scott Smith\, who works for the refuge as Vice President and together have raised 4 children and has 7 grandchildren. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTammy Thies is the founder of the Wildcat Sanctuary\, a non-profit\, accredited sanctuary that provides a safe home to felid species including\, cougar\, tiger\, lynx and other wild cats in need of shelter. \nThies has a marketing and journalism degree from the University of St. Thomas.  After graduation\, she developed and managed advertising campaigns for clients such as Coca-Cola\, BMW\, Holiday Inn and Timberland. \nShe is a native Minnesotan and during her advertising career became aware of the need for a sanctuary through her exposure to big cats during photo shoots. She learned that\, throughout the United States\, tens of thousands of these animals are privately owned as pets and used as performers or for-profit breeding. \nThies made a mid-life career change to become a voice for these animals.  She began The Wildcat Sanctuary in 1999. Now\, years later\, the Sanctuary houses over 120 residents on 85 acres in Sandstone\, MN.  Animals are not bought\, sold\, bred or traded. Each resident is given every opportunity to behave naturally in a wonderful free-roaming environment and receive the best vet care at the on-site animal hospital. \nThe Wildcat Sanctuary provides educational outreach seminars to educate the public about the captive wildlife crisis across the United States\, as well as supporting legislative efforts banning these practices. \nThies was very instrumental in testifying on behalf of the Minnesota Exotic Animal Law that bans the ownership of dangerous exotic animals as pets. She has assisted local law enforcement\, United States Department of Agriculture and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife on cases involving wild cats. \nThies has appeared as an expert on the captive wildlife crisis across national media outlets such as the History Channel\, Animal Planet and the CNN iReport. \nThe sanctuary is accredited by The American Sanctuary Association\, Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries\, a member of the Big Cat Sanctuary Alliance\, and awarded a 4-star rating by Charity Navigator. The Wildcat Sanctuary is the only big cat sanctuary in the upper Midwest. DESCRIPTION:Animal cases can be very complicated and can overwhelm a small or rural law enforcement agency.  This webinar is going to delve into the best investigation techniques on animal abuse and animal fighting cases.  We will explore unique and large-scale animal cases and how to prepare for them.  We will explore how to prosecute in a small or rural jurisdiction and how to convince conservative rural judges to take animal abuse cases seriously. \nPresenters\n \nRichard Samuels has been a deputy in the Spotsylvania County (Virginia) Animal Control Division of the Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s Office for the last 19 years. He has investigated over 200 animal fighting cases — 100 of which were cockfighting investigations. For two years\, Richard worked undercover as a cockfighter\, witnessing over 2\,000 fights. His experience in the field has enabled him to testify as an expert witness on cockfighting numerous times in the Commonwealth and federal courts. \n  \n\nMichelle Welch is a Senior Assistant Attorney General in the Virginia Attorney General’s Office.  She is the Director of the Animal Law Unit at the Attorney General’s Office.  She is charged with taking all animal law questions in Virginia.  She is called on by agencies all over the Commonwealth to act as a special prosecutor in animal cruelty and animal fighting cases.  Ms. Welch has also been appointed a Special Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Virginia to aid in animal fighting prosecutions. \nMs. Welch frequently gives advice to law enforcement authorities and prosecutors all over Virginia\, the nation and internationally.   She trains prosecutors\, animal control and law enforcement officers on the state of Virginia animal law and testified before a U.S. Congressional Caucus examining the enforcement of animal laws and the cooperation between state and federal partners.  She is a speaker at many conferences including Virginia Animal Control Association and the Association of Prosecuting Attorneys’ National Animal Cruelty Conference. \n\nWEBSITE LINK:  https://www.justiceclearinghouse.com/webinar/investigating-and-prosecuting-animal-crimes-in-small-rural-and-tribal-communities-part-2/
