She has received many regional\, national\, and international awards\, including the Excellence in Veterinary Medicine Award in 2001 from the World Small Animal Veterinary Association\, and most recently the 2020 Leo K. Bustad Companion Animal Veterinarian of the Year Award from the AVMA. \nDr. Downing is a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation\, a Certified Veterinary Pain Practitioner\, and she was the third veterinarian in the world to earn the Diplomate credential in the American Academy of Pain Management (a human pain management organization). She was a founder of the International Veterinary Academy of Pain Management\, and served as that organization’s second President. In addition\, she has served as President of the American Association of Human-Animal Bond Veterinarians (now called the Human-Animal Bond Association). \nDr. Downing is an internationally sought-after speaker on a wide variety of topics including pain management\, physical rehabilitation\, physical medicine\, hospice/end-of-life care\, anaesthesia related topics\, and overcoming compliance obstacles/issues in veterinary medicine. In 2016 she completed her Master of Science degree in Clinical Bioethics from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in NYC and Union Graduate College with the intention of translating the practices of clinical bioethics for application in veterinary medicine. Ken oversees the vision for\, and development of\, training education programs. You will usually find Ken teaching at a ClickerExpo conference\, leading a course at the Karen Pryor National Training Center (The Ranch)\, or teaching one of the Karen Pryor Academy courses.A 40+ year veteran of animal care and training\, Ken is a biologist and behaviorist who has supervised the development care and training of more than 40\,000 species. He has worked with organizations across the globe to improve animal training\, program effectiveness\, and animal health and welfare. Ken’s diverse body of contributions includes designing and implementing conservation projects for elephant protection and spearheading projects to train everything from komodo dragons to butterflies. Ken’s extensive canine work includes working with trainers\, organizations\, and federal and state agencies on training procedures for topics including aggression\, search-and-rescue\, and scent detection.\n\nKen has written/edited two successful books\, taught at a major university\, hosted two successful seasons of the television series Talk to the Animals\, and was EVP of animal care and training at Chicago’s Shedd Aquarium. The evidentiary value of the animals’ condition diminishes as they recover.  Therefore\, by the time the case goes to court\, the current condition of the animal or its presence in the courtroom is not necessary to make the case.  Animal victims deserve to recover and be placed into a suitable permanent home as quickly as possible. Leath also successfully investigated one of the largest cockfighting cases in Florida history\, resulting in the seizure of more than 650 birds and numerous arrests. Leath has responded to multiple dogfighting operations throughout his time at the ASPCA\, including the second-largest dogfighting bust in U.S. history in 2013\, resulting in the seizure of more than 400 dogs. \nLeath holds a bachelor’s degree in animal science from the University of Tennessee and a Graduate Certificate in Veterinary Forensic Science from the University of Florida. He is a courtesy Assistant Professor for the Department of Comparative\, Diagnostic\, and Population Medicine at the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine.  Leath is a Past President of the International Veterinary Forensic Sciences Association and is a Certified National Animal Cruelty Investigator through the University of Missouri. He has also been certified in Equine Cruelty Investigation through the University of Colorado. She specializes in stress and behavior\, social cognition and emotion\, positive welfare and the prevention and treatment of behavior problems in dogs. In addition to her academic background\, she has been in the dog training and behavior profession since 2000. She currently splits her time between private behavior work and teaching other dog trainers and behavior consultants online and through seminars and conferences. \nIn addition\, Dr. Spaulding is a member of the IAABC Foundation Board. She is also a member of the Fear Free Advisory Group and an authorized Speaker for Fear Free\, an organization that advocates for minimizing fear\, anxiety and stress for pets at vet clinics\, groomers and training facilities. She also chairs two task forces for Meeting of the Minds\, a coalition of top dog professionals across the country charged with improving the quality of life for our dogs. \nBefore opening Smart Dog\, Dr. Spaulding earned her B.S. in Wildlife Ecology at the University of Wisconsin – Madison. In college\, she volunteered for a year at the local humane society. She was then hired by the same shelter. During her time at the animal shelter\, she and a coworker established a training program for shelter dogs and their volunteer walkers to help make the dogs more adoptable.
