SUMMARY:Webinar - 5/12/20 - Why Access to Pet Resources is a Social Justice Issue - UW Shelter Medicine

SUMMARY:Webinar - 5/7/20 - Stronger Together: Building Healthier Human-Animal Bonds in the 21st Century - Virox
DESCRIPTION:Humanity’s fate has always been linked to the health and cooperation of other animals. While it may seem like 21st Century technology has usurped our dependence upon and responsibility for the wellbeing of animals\, it has done the opposite. Technology is revealing just how essential the human-animal bond remains. This presentation will reexamine the profound history of the human-animal bond through the lens of the latest science that tells us we are not done “using” animals\, because we were never just using them. This is the new awareness that can tap into much deeper and rewarding relationships with animals and make us stronger and healthier together.  \n\nMeg Daley Olmert is an expert on the neurobiology of the human-animal bond and its therapeutic effects.  In 2009\, her groundbreaking book\, Made for Each Other: The Biology of the Human-Animal Bond\, was published to international acclaim.  Scholars from a wide range of disciplines applauded the clear and rigorous scientific case Olmert made that human civilization and animal domestication are an evolutionary coincidence of our shared neurobiological heritage.  It is this shared primal brain network that creates the sense of calm and attraction in which social bonds—among and between species—can flourish.  This affiliative mind/body state is also essential to the wellbeing of all social mammals. \nFor the last decade Meg has served as the Director of Research for Warrior Canine Connection\, an innovative and highly effective animal assisted therapy that uses the training of service dogs to reduce the symptoms of combat trauma. In 2015 she became the scientific advisor to The Comfort Dog Project in Uganda—the first animal-assisted trauma therapy in central Africa.  Meg continues to publish and collaborate with scientists worldwide and is a much sought-after guest speaker at academic and professional conferences and has given two widely viewed TEDxTalks. \nhttps://event.webinarjam.com/channel/Virox-Animal_Health

SUMMARY:Webinar - 5/7/20 - Fundraising for Public Shelters and the 501(c)(3)s that Support Them - CalAnimals - Gina Knepp
DESCRIPTION:Did you know that California law does not prohibit a government agency from accepting donations? Government-run shelters are missing big opportunities if they don’t recruit community members to create a 501(c)(3) to support shelter efforts of animal welfare. Hear a case study from Friends of Front Street Shelter and their annual event called Big Day of Giving sponsored by the Sacramento Region Community Foundation\, which raises funds for approximately 600 nonprofits (https://www.sacregcf.org/about-us/newsroom/making-news/bdog2019-results/).The Front Street Shelter garners more individual contributions than any other nonprofit\, even though the shelter is a city agency. Understand the legalities and practicalities of accepting donations\, ad understand the benefits of enlisting supporters to create and maintain a 501(c)(3) nonprofit to support shelter operations by raising both funds and goodwill. Learn some best practices in fundraising to avoid controversy\, damaging public scrutiny\, and loss of goodwill. \nWebinar for CalAnimals Members Only. \nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_k7qiyxMYSU2TMs3DawtLWA

SUMMARY:Webinar - 5/5/20 - Large-Animal Cruelty Cases: Unique Considerations for Investigating Non-Companion Animal Neglect - NACA - Justine Clearinghouse
DESCRIPTION:Animal cruelty cases involving farm animals present unique challenges for investigators and animal care professionals. This webinar will provide a brief overview of how animal cruelty laws apply to these cases\, and how to assess whether there is a violation. Specifically\, it will discuss basic standards of care\, assessing physical and living conditions\, and common conditions/causes. We will conclude with special considerations for this type of cruelty seizure\, to include ongoing care\, resources and case management. \n  \n  \n\n \n  \n  \nThe National Law Enforcement Center on Animal Abuse was established by the National Sheriffs’ Association to provide law enforcement officers information on the realities of animal abuse and to promote their proactive involvement in the enforcement of animal abuse laws in their communities. Through our partners\, the Center will serve as an information clearinghouse and forum for law enforcement on the growing problem of animal abuse and its link to other types of crimes\, including violence against humans. The Center also promotes officer safety in officer-dog encounters through continuing education and training. \n  \n  \n \n  \nThe National Animal Care & Control Association (NACA) was formed in 1978 for the express purpose of assisting its members to perform their duties in a professional manner. We believe only carefully selected and properly trained animal control personnel can correct community problems resulting from irresponsible animal ownership. NACA’s purpose is to preserve the Human/Animal Bond by insisting on responsible animal ownership. \n  \n  \n  \n\n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPresenters:\n\n\nAudra Houghton began working with animals more than 25 years ago\, during which time she has filled several roles from veterinary technician to dog trainer and K9 handler. In early 2008\, she entered the animal welfare field and found her true passion.  She served as both a Cruelty Investigator and a supervisor of a highly effective Animal Crimes Investigations unit in San Antonio\, Texas where she gained extensive experience investigating misdemeanor and felony criminal cases involving a wide range of species. During that time she led and participated in several task forces in Texas to address animal fighting\, abuse and neglect.  In 2016\, she became the Director of Operations at a non-profit Animal Care and Control shelter in Philadelphia\, Pennsylvania\, where she served on the Philadelphia Mayor’s Animal Advisory Committee\, the Philadelphia No-Kill Coalition steering committee\, and served as the interim Executive Director in 2018. She has a talent for overseeing large seizures and field operations and finds being able to support communities and their pets in crisis both challenging and rewarding. She joined HSUS in December of 2018 where she serves as the Director of the Operations arm of the Animal Rescue Team. Here\, she oversees the dedicated\, hardworking team responsible for the field response and readiness\, sheltering\, and volunteer program aspects of ART. \nWebsite Page:  https://justiceclearinghouse.com/webinar/large-animal-cruelty-cases-unique-considerations-for-investigating-non-companion-animal-neglect/
