We are excited to partner with you to make an impact on animal shelters in California. The Open Grants period will commence on May 1\, 2022 and end on June 30\, 2022. \nLearn more and apply here: https://www.californiaforallanimals.com/grants/open-grants/ \nWho is eligible? \n\nmunicipal shelters\,\nprivate shelters with municipal contracts\, and\nprivate shelters without municipal contracts that house animals in a brick and mortar facility and are open to the public a minimum of fifteen hours per week for adoptions and return to home.\n\n\nAnimal control agencies that provide field services and animal control functions are also eligible to apply\, even if they do not perform sheltering services.\n\nMost grants will be funded in a range of $25\,000 to $200\,000; however\, if your proposal is outside this range\, reach out to our team and we can talk through it. \nWhat are the guidelines? \nThe goal of the California for All Animals program is to reduce the euthanasia of healthy and treatable animals in shelters. That means all shelters in California are able to provide every animal at risk with the Right Care in the Right Place at the Right Time to the Right Outcome. To reach this goal\, we are focusing on four categories: Outcomes (Adoptions\, Foster\, Return to Home and Community)\, Field Services and Animal Control\, Care of Animals in the Shelter\, and Community Support. \nOutcomes (Adoptions\, Return to Home and Return to Community) \nWhat does your organization need to increase adoptions\, foster programs\, transfer to partners\, return to home\, and return to community of origin (community cats\, for example). Proposals may include requests for veterinary care\, supplies\, equipment\, technology\, training and staffing. \nField Services and Animal Control \nAnimal control officers play a vital role in an agency’s connection to the community. What does your organization need to return loose pets to their homes and provide support to community members? Examples include supplies such as kitten kits\, fencing\, trolleys\, doghouses\, vouchers for spay/neuter and medical care\, microchip scanners\, collars and leashes\, and technology to enhance mobile work. Proposals will also be accepted for training for animal control officers to provide supportive services. \nCare of Animals in the Shelter \nGrant funding in this category should focus on physical\, medical and mental well-being of animals that are in the shelter’s care. This includes veterinary care supplies and services\, behavior and enrichment\, volunteer and foster programs\, equipment and supplies including housing improvements and interaction spaces. \nIntake Management and Community Support \nGrant funding in this category should focus on strengthening and streamlining your organization’s ability to provide services to the community. Everyone wants to be able to walk their dog – for fun\, for exercise\, or just to get somewhere safely-without getting dragged off their feet or dislocating a shoulder. \nLeash walking is not a natural behavior in itself\, but there are some hard-wired puppy behaviors in early development that if properly reinforced\, actually help make leash training easier. The sooner you start\, the better: it is definitely easier to start right away with a baby puppy and build good habits than to fix bad habits later on with a full grown dog! \nThis webinar will look at the ways that we can build leash skills in baby puppies – starting from the day you first bring them home and splitting the skills into baby brain sized bits – so that you can you can get off on the right foot and build good habits before bad ones get a leash pulling gets a chance to become habitual! We’ll look at the factors that make leash training challenging and the things that handlers do that accidentally make this worse\, so that you can prevent those from becoming problems for your new puppy. We’ll look at games that you can play to make the learning fun\, how to determine the location\, duration\, and frequency of leash training sessions to maximize success AND how to manage exercise needs and leash walking before your puppy has fully established skills so that you aren’t just setting yourself back! She is a Registered Veterinary Technician\, a Certified Professional Dog Trainer\, a Karen Pryor Academy Certified Training Partner\, a member of the Association of Pet Dog Trainers and a member of the International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants. \nShannon created Truly Force Free Animal Training in 2015 so that anyone\, anywhere could have access to force free\, positive reinforcement animal training. In 2018\, Shannon published “The Evolution of Dog Training” available in audio\, print and Ebook. \nShannon’s dog training philosophy revolves around force free\, positive reinforcement; however\, her goal is for healthy happy relationships between pets and their people. Diet\, exercise\, environment\, and training all play a significant role in achieving this goal. \nShannon spent many years as the head dog trainer for PAWS for Healing\, a pet assisted therapy organization. She performed temperament testing and assisted in the training of therapy dogs who visited hospitals\, veteran groups\, special educational facilities\, and convalescent homes. DESCRIPTION:On July 10\, 2021 Maddie’s Fund® presented the 2021 Avanzino Leadership Award to Lila Miller\, Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) for her trailblazing leadership and purposeful dedication to the field of veterinary shelter medicine. \nA proclamation of Dr. Lila Miller Shelter Medicine Day has been declared for July 10. Recognition of Dr. Miller\, this day and the Avanzino Leadership Award was received from U.S. Senator Charles E. Schumer\, U.S. Representative Tom Reed\, New York Governor Andrew M. Cuomo\, New York State Assemblywoman Deborah Glick\, New York City Mayor’s office\, City of Ithaca Mayor Svante Myrick\, and Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer. \nDr. Miller has long been a pioneer and leading voice in veterinary shelter medicine. She transformed the lives of countless pets\, developing the first veterinarian-written guidelines for shelter animal care\, which are now used in shelters across the country to ensure the humane treatment of shelter pets. An unassuming trailblazer\, she’s educated a generation of students about issues shelters face and has paved the way for women of color in veterinary medicine. In 1977\, Dr. Miller was one of the first two African American women to ever graduate from Cornell University’s College of Veterinary Medicine. \n“Dr. Miller is the mother of shelter medicine\,” said Dr. Laurie Peek\, Maddie’s Fund Executive Leadership Team. “She has forged a path to achieve not only her childhood dreams of becoming a veterinarian\, but also inspires generations of veterinarians along the way. Shelter medicine changes everything because of her. We owe Dr. Miller our deepest gratitude for her bold ideas and innovative work. We are so very fortunate to have a living legacy in the field of animal welfare and our world.” \nThe Avanzino Leadership Award is presented with a $25\,000 grant which Dr. Miller has designated to Animal Care Centers of New York City. \nIn 1999\, Dr. Miller taught the first shelter medicine class in the U.S. at Cornell\, and in 2003 taught the first shelter medicine course on Veterinary Information Network (VIN). She co-founded the Association of Shelter Veterinarians (ASV) and has also co-edited four shelter medicine textbooks\, served as adjunct professor at both Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine and the University of Pennsylvania’s School of Veterinary Medicine\, and has lectured extensively both nationally and internationally. \nShe spent her entire groundbreaking veterinary career with the ASPCA as the Director of the ASPCA’s Brooklyn Clinic\, Veterinary Advisor\, Vice President of Veterinary Outreach\, and Vice President of Shelter Medicine\, retiring in 2019. She currently serves as a member of the American Association of Veterinary State Boards advocating for animal shelters. \nNew York City Mayor Bill de Blasio’s office presented a letter of commendation to Dr. Miller at the virtual awards ceremony. “The NYC Mayor’s Office of Animal Welfare holds Dr. Miller in the highest regard\,” said Christine Kim\, Director of the NYC Mayor’s Office of Animal Welfare. “I congratulate Dr. Miller on the well-deserved recognition for her lifelong commitment to shelter medicine and for her trailblazing legacy that inspires people of color exploring pathways into an historically white profession.” \nThe Avanzino Leadership Award is named after Rich Avanzino who is considered the father of the no-kill movement and was Maddie’s Fund President from 1999 – 2015.
