SUMMARY:Webinar - 9/23/20 - The Practices of Purposeful Leadership - The AAWA
DESCRIPTION:The experience of meaningfulness is a critical ingredient to thriving at work.  While animal welfare work is naturally imbued with a sense of meaning\, especially in times of crisis\, we often lose sight of it or fail to enable it.  Research finds those who work for purposeful leaders – leaders who routinely enable the experience of meaningfulness throughout their teams – are more fulfilled\, resilient\, higher performing\, and significantly less likely to burn out\, even in the most challenging times.  This session describes the science of purpose and meaning and shows how purposeful leaders compel teams and organizations toward their positive potential.  We’ll explore three evidence-based practices of purposeful leadership to empower leaders to bring the best out of their teams in a meaningful way. \nLEARNING OBJECTIVES:\ni. Understand the science of wellbeing\, meaning\, and purpose\nii. Understand the human performance and business case upside of wellbeing\, meaning\, and purpose in the workplace\niii. An introduction to the 3 key practice domains of Purposeful Leadership\niv. An exploration of some evidence-based tools for applying Purposeful Leadership across the 3 key practice domain \nThis webinar has been pre-approved for 1 Certified Animal Welfare Administrator continuing education credit. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://theaawa.org/events/eventdetails.aspx?id=1376322

SUMMARY:Weekly Call - Monday Mornings - Connect With Other Animal Shelter Professionals - Maddie's Fund
DESCRIPTION:Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic\, animal shelter workers\, volunteers and animal welfare leaders from across the country have been meeting every Monday morning at 7am PT/10am ET to discuss protocols\, ideas\, obstacles they’re facing and more.     \nNEW TIME as of 9/23/20 – 8 AM PT\, 11 AM ET. \nLed by Kristen Hassen-Auerbach\, Director of Pima Animal Care in Tucson\, AZ\, these calls have provided an opportunity for people to connect that otherwise may not have even met.    \n“The purpose of these calls is simple – maintain connection among shelter professionals\, provide support and comradery\, and share science-based news and information along with emerging best practices in animal welfare\,” Hassen-Auerbach says. “These calls are always lively and interesting and we’re not afraid to debate and share different perspectives from the attendees. You can take center stage and share your thoughts and ideas in front of several hundred of your colleagues or quietly drink your morning coffee and listen in.”  \nFor many\, these calls have been an invaluable resource. “When the subject of DEI (Diversity\, Equity and Inclusion) came to the front of all of our minds\, the calls adapted and we had a space to again learn from one another\,” said Emily Klehm from South Suburban Humane Society in Chicago Heights\, IL. “The calls have been my go-to source for grant information\, statistics and trends. I’ve also been able to identify and connect to colleagues working on the same issues in similar communities.”  \nDr. Ellen Jefferson\, Executive Director at Austin Pets Alive! adds\, “We hear from people in the industry who have important information related to COVID\, new programming and research.  This is information you can’t possibly get in your day to day work at your local shelter.”  \nIf you’re a shelter professional\, dedicated volunteer or run a rescue organization\, we want you to join us! Bookmark the link below and we will see you on Monday! \nNote: The calls are recorded so if you can’t make it\, you can listen in later. If you haven’t already\, join the Facebook group to access the link to recorded calls and to connect with others on there. \nMONDAYS:  8:00 AM to 9:00 AM PT – new time \nJoin Zoom Meeting (same link as before)https://us02web.zoom.us/j/607482466?pwd=dWgwUDhUeVMzb01FcHNkc3dsUGlGUT09\n\nNEW Passcode: 249477\n\nMeeting ID: 607 482 466\n\nOne tap mobile+16699006833\,\,607482466#\,\,\,\,\,\,0#\,\,249477# US (San Jose)+12532158782\,\,607482466#\,\,\,\,\,\,0#\,\,249477# US (Tacoma)Dial by your location    +1 669 900 6833 US (San Jose)    +1 253 215 8782 US (Tacoma)    +1 346 248 7799 US (Houston)    +1 646 558 8656 US (New York)    +1 301 715 8592 US (Germantown)    +1 312 626 6799 US (Chicago)Meeting ID: 607 482 466Passcode: 249477Find your local number: https://us02web.zoom.us/u/kfjtq4DTY\n\nMEETING LINK:  https://us02web.zoom.us/j/607482466?pwd=dWgwUDhUeVMzb01FcHNkc3dsUGlGUT09

SUMMARY:Webinar - 10/2/20 - Stressed Out: Dogs\, Hormones and Stress - Jessica Hekman\, DVM\, PhD - PPG (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:Anxiety is a major problem for many pet dogs. What happens in your dog’s brain and body when something scares her? How long can you expect her stress response to last? \nIn this webinar\, Jessica Hekman\, DVM\, PhD\, will talk about the stress response in dogs. She will explain the original evolutionary purpose of the stress response; what the hormones involved in it (like cortisol) do in the body; the difference between acute and chronic stress and the different effects they have on dogs’ health; and what we know about how long it takes the body to clear those hormones. You will definitely learn some cool stuff about how the brain works and what that means for your stressed-out dog! \nLearning Objectives: \n\nDescribe how the stress response functions and what its purpose is.\nDescribe health effects (both positive and negative!) for acute versus chronic stress.\nExplain how the stress response affects the dog’s brain and their ability to think clearly and behave normally.\nDescribe how long it takes the stress response to clear from the body\, and list possible alternative explanations for dogs who display signs of stress longer than it takes for stress hormones to be cleared.\n\n\n\nAbout The Presenter\n \n\n\n\n\n\nDr. Jessica Hekman\, DVM\, PhD\n \n\nJessica is a veterinary researcher who is fascinated by dog behavior. After eleven years working as a computer programmer\, she decided to go back to school to research the causes of behavior problems in dogs. She received her veterinary degree in 2012 from the Tufts Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine in Massachusetts\, where she also received a Master’s degree for her work on stress behaviors in hospitalized dogs. After graduation\, she completed a year-long internship specializing in shelter medicine at the University of Florida Maddie’s Shelter Medicine Program. She received her PhD in genetics at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign\, studying a group of foxes (often known as the “Siberian silver foxes”) which have been bred over many generations to be friendly to humans. She is currently working at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard as a postdoctoral associate\, studying the genetics of behavior in pet dogs through the Darwin’s Ark project and the Working Dogs Project. Her ultimate goal is to find genetic causes of fearfulness in dogs\, to work with behaviorally challenged shelter dogs\, and to help people better understand the science behind dog behavior. She also frequently teaches online classes and webinars about canine genetics and behavior. Jessica lives in Raymond\, NH with her husband and three dogs. You can follow her on Twitter @dogzombieblog or on Facebook at facebook.com/dogzombieblog. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://petprofessionalguild.com/event-3702930
