SUMMARY:6/6/22 - Managing a Multi-Dog Household: The Lazy Dog Trainer Edition - PPG (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:In this webinar\, Kristi Benson will delve into the ways the guardians of a multi-dog household can make their living situations more peaceful and joyful\, for both the humans and the dogs involved. She’ll review safety factors in having a home with multiple dogs\, including how dogs function as social carnivores and how and why other pets and small children may be at risk. She will delve into “management”\, or the prevention of problem behaviours before they start\, when dealing with multiple animals. She will also cover useful tricks and tools for both management and training\, how to maximise training set-ups\, how and when to train on-the-fly\, and the logistics of comfortable down-time. Kristi will cover how to comfortably bring clients on board with kinder techniques and dismantling client myths about behaviour and dynamics among multi-dog homes. She will also tackle how to have tricky conversations about re-homing and permanent separation of animals in a single home. \nKristi has lived with up to 13 dogs in her home when she was running a sled dog rescue and has tested and streamlined effective and welfare-forward techniques to meet everyone’s needs while keeping the (relative) peace in a busy home. \nLearning Objectives: \n\nIdentify safety considerations for multi-dog households\, including with cats and children.\nUnderstand the basics of predatory behaviour and acquired bite inhibition.\nUnderstand and implement management (response prevention) for multi-dog households to reduce problem behaviours including fighting.\nIdentify useful and important training plans\, and how to effectively train in a multi-dog household.\nUnderstand the basics of classical conditioning and how to use it in a solo-counterconditioning protocol on-the-fly.\nIdentify and reduce risk/harm in worst-case scenarios.\n\nWEBSITE LINK:  https://petprofessionalguild.com/event-4818894

SUMMARY:Webinar - 6/8/22 - Northern Tier Shelter Initiative Zoomies: Shelter Intake Meets Capacity for Care - ASPCAPro
DESCRIPTION:With shelter populations reaching pre-pandemic numbers\, leadership and staff are asking themselves the age-old question: “How can we ensure the number of animals in our shelter does not exceed our capacity for care while still serving our community?” \nOne answer suggested to help control the number of animals entering the shelter is managed intake. Managing the flow of animals into the shelter has been shown to decrease overall intake numbers\, decrease crowding and costs\, and in some cases\, reduce euthanasia. With this tactic comes a myriad of questions\, concerns\, and misconceptions. \nDuring this session\, leaders from Northern Tier organizations who have incorporated measures to help decrease and manage intake will share their wins\, losses\, and learnings. The panel will also answer pre-submitted and live questions from the audience. \n\n\n\nTakeaways \n\n\nDiscuss misconceptions surrounding “managed intake.”\nLearn how communities can benefit from collaborative efforts to decrease intake.\nDiscover programs and tactics to help decrease intake\, including self-rehoming and veterinary\, behavior\, and pet food support.\nGet answers to your most pressing questions.\n\n\n\n\nPresenters \nNadia Novik\, Chief Operations Officer at the Idaho Humane Society\nMelissa Winn\, Center Manager\, Anchorage Animal Care & Control\nShelbi Waters \, Executive Director\, Souris Valley Animal Shelter \nSuited For \n\nAnimal welfare leaders and staff working in the Northern Tier (Alaska\, Idaho\, Minnesota\, Montana\, North Dakota\, Washington\, and Wisconsin)\, but all are welcome. \n\n\n\nCredits \n\nThe ASPCA is an approved provider of content\, which enhances professional competence and aligns with the 5 domains of the CAWA Exam specification. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://www.aspcapro.org/training/webinar/northern-tier-shelter-initiative-zoomies-shelter-intake-meets-capacity-care

SUMMARY:Webinar - 6/9/22 - Coping with Canine Cognitive Dysfunction: How to Provide the Best Care for Our Dogs and Ourselves - FDSA (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:Note: Attendees will also receive a FREE copy of Eileen’s current ebook on CCD as well as a copy of the second edition when it comes out via their webinar library. \nCanine cognitive dysfunction is a tough disease. It sneaks up on our dogs in the guise of normal aging—then we realize that something may be really wrong. As symptoms progress\, we can feel that we are losing our dogs before they ever pass away. \nBut many dogs with CCD can still live enriched lives. Some can profit from medical treatment. There is no cure\, but early recognition of the disease can give owners better tools to help their dogs and themselves. \nEileen will discuss the disease\, its prevalence\, and currently known risk factors. She’ll draw from her own experience and many years in the CCD community to provide information on changing the dog’s environment—and the owner’s mindset—to better cope with the disease. \nFinally\, she will provide resources on euthanasia and grief. These topics loom large for any guardian of a dog with CCD. This always painful decision can be even more difficult for people when the dog involved is mentally deteriorating but physically healthy. \nAdvanced canine cognitive dysfunction is rarely short of devastating. But there are things we can do to feel less alone in our situation and to help our dogs on this journey. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://www.fenzidogsportsacademy.com/index.php/self-study/webinars
