SUMMARY:Webinar - 8/4/22 - Harmonious Walks: Redefining Loose-Leash Walking - FDSA (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:Dogs who pull like a tank; dogs who play tug with the leash. Sound familiar? Ask any trainer why clients reach out to them for help\, and somewhere in the top three reasons you’ll find “walking on-leash”. It’s such a common problem\, and the simplest solution is actually the most unexpected one. \nIn this webinar\, we’ll cover how to achieve harmonious walks. Attendees will learn how to attain that elusive “loose-leash walking” behaviour in the most enjoyable way. We’ll move away from focusing on the traditional heeling behaviour\, and towards recognizing and meeting dogs’ needs through foundation skills and on-leash games that anyone can do. \n“Harmonious walks” means everyone wins. Happy dogs\, and happy guardians! \nPresenter: Nancy Tucker \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://www.fenzidogsportsacademy.com/index.php/self-study/webinars

SUMMARY:Webinar - 8/5/22 - AlignCare: Program for Pet Health Equity - CalAnimals
DESCRIPTION:All members of the family deserve access to healthcare\, including the nonhuman members (pets). Health equity means that all family members have the potential to get the care they need. When they don’t receive needed care\, health disparities result. Unfortunately\, more than 1 out of 4 families do not have access to veterinary care. Not having veterinary care threatens the wellbeing of the whole family. \nThe AlignCare system was created to improve access to veterinary care for families currently underserved. It is a community-based collaboration where resources and activities are aligned\, including funds to subsidize the veterinary care for qualified families.  This presentation will describe the societal problem and how AlignCare addresses it. Also\, participants will learn what is required to bring AlignCare to their community. \nSpeaker: Dr. Michael Blackwell\, DVM\, MPH – University of Tennessee\, Knoxville \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_em05H86CQ02KZ-3RaEnjbg

SUMMARY:Webinar - 8/9/22 - Building a Positive Workplace Culture—Why It Matters and How to Do It - HASS
DESCRIPTION:The animal welfare industry is understaffed and facing worker turnover\, like employers around the country. The effects are dire: animal shelter workers are burned out\, and animals’ lives are at risk. But in the face of these challenges\, Pasco County Animal Services (PCAS) in Florida has zero vacant positions\, and hasn’t had an opening in an entry level position in over 14 months. \nPCAS Assistant Director Spencer Conover attributes this success to a positive workplace culture\, built through inspiration\, leadership\, recognition\, equal pay\, and training. In this webinar\,  Conover will discuss how PCAS created and sustains its positive workplace culture\, and how you can easily adapt these methods to your workplace to help better retain team members and build a positive workplace culture of your own. \nJoin us Tuesday\, August 9 at 5pm CT for an exciting webinar\, Building a Positive Workplace Culture – Why It Matters and How to Do It\, hosted by Spencer Conover\, Assistant Director of Pasco County Animal Services. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://zoom.us/webinar/register/6516583441652/WN_WKolGPggRZm_5nQ_55S5KA

SUMMARY:Webinar - 8/11/22 - Did You Hear That?! Helping Dogs with Noise Sensitivity - ACVB (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:We live in a noisy world and dogs are very sensitive to sound. They can hear a much broader range of frequencies than humans can so it should be no surprise that noise sensitivity is common in dogs. Noise sensitivity encompasses fear\, anxiety\, and phobic-based responses to a range of sounds\, including loudness\, pitch\, and suddenness. Nearly half of families report that their dog shows at least one sign of fear when exposed to unusual\, loud or sudden noises. Noise sensitivity\, left untreated\, generally gets progressively worse over time. Early diagnosis and intervention is critical to prevent anxiety and fear from escalating. In this webinar we will discuss the range of sounds dogs may be sensitive to as well as how genetics\, age and concurrent health problems may make sound sensitivity worse. We will also cover the cruciality of early diagnosis and intervention and effective treatment strategies. \nAbout the Presenter\nDr. Jill E. Sackman is a Diplomate of both the American College of Veterinary Behaviorists and the American College of Veterinary Surgeons. She is the owner and founding veterinarian of Animal Behavior Consultants of Michigan\, a referral veterinary behavior practice with offices in metro-Detroit\, Grand Rapids\, and Northern Michigan. Dr. Sackman is Fear Free certified and a Family Paws educator. She sees pets with behavior disorders that range from mild fears to extreme anxiety\, aggression\, compulsive disorders\, sound sensitivities and separation anxiety. She especially enjoys working with pets in families with children. Dr. Sackman is also a certified professional trainer through the Karen Pryor Academy\, earning her KPA-CTP with her French Bulldog\, Rose. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://www.dacvb.org/page/webinarseries

SUMMARY:Webinar - 8/17/22 - The Poisoned Cue And Its Implications For Training - Dog iBox (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:Much is known about discriminative stimuli (cues) that are taught with either reinforcement or punishment contingencies and how these stimuli function as conditioned reinforcers or conditioned aversive stimuli. However\, little is known experimentally about discriminative stimuli established with both reinforcing as well as aversive events. It has been reported that the interaction between reinforcing and aversive events makes the discriminative function somewhat different from other discriminative stimuli (see Hearst & Sidman\, 1961). Karen Pryor (2002) called this phenomenon the poisoned cue. She suggested that a cue\, or discriminative stimulus\, that is established using both reinforcing and aversive events leads to the breakdown of the behavior both preceding and following the cue. This may be due to an increase in avoidance behaviors and the uncertainty that exists regarding the consequence that will follow. The poisoned cue phenomenon is important because it reflects many teaching situations in the real world. Discriminative stimuli in the real world are rarely taught with purely positive reinforcement or purely aversive consequences. \nThis presentation will show an experimental analysis of the poisoned cue and discuss techniques to identify situations that might involve poisoned cues. It will also discuss ways to overcome these cues. \nAbout the Speaker \nDr. Jesús Rosales-Ruiz is an Associate Professor in the Department of Behavior Analysis at the University of North Texas. He obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Kansas in 1995 under the direction of Dr. Donald M. Baer. During his graduate training\, he also worked closely with Dr. Ogden R. Lindsley. Dr. Rosales-Ruiz’s areas of interest include antecedent control of behavior\, generalization\, behavioral cusps\, fluency-based teaching\, treatment of autism\, teaching of academic behavior\, animal training\, rule-governed behavior\, and contingency-shaped behavior. He has served on several editorial boards\, including the Journal of Precision Teaching\, the European Journal of Behavior Analysis\, and the International Journal of Psychology and Psychological Therapy. Dr. Rosales-Ruiz is a fellow of the Eastern Psychological Association and a trustee of the Cambridge Center for Behavioral Studies. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://www.dog-ibox.com/en/understanding-poisoned-cues.html

SUMMARY:Webinar - 8/17/22 - The Roundtable: Transport – Best Practices - The AAWA
DESCRIPTION:The data from Shelter Animals Count tells us shelters are full right now because there have been more animals entering shelters than leaving them for the past 5 months straight. Traditional methods for alleviating shelter crowding\, including transport\, are proving difficult to implement due to staffing and volunteer shortages\, decreased funding\, and other roadblocks. \nAnimal transport\, at its most basic level\, is a supply and demand equation. However\, there is much more to consider when establishing a successful transport program that benefits communities\, adopters\, over-crowded source organizations\, destination organizations\, and most importantly\, companion animals. This exclusive roundtable conversation will explore the current challenges of companion animal transport and discuss how shelters are adapting in a COVID world. Questions from the audience will follow the roundtable discussion. \nModerated by Jim Tedford\, CAWA\, CEO & President\, The Association for Animal Welfare Advancement \nThe Roundtable Panel: \n\nCJ Bentley\, Vice President for Animal Welfare\, Atlanta Humane Society\, Georgia\nJillian Sergio\, Executive Director\, Companion Animal Alliance\, Louisiana\nTBA speaker from Wisconsin Humane Society\, Wisconsin\n\nWEBSITE LINK:  https://learning.theaawa.org/p/RT-08-17-22
