SUMMARY:Webinar - 8/20/20 - Barbara Lloyd - PTSD in Dogs and Concrete Advice for the People Who Love Them - FDSA (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:Date: Thursday\, August 20\, 2020\nTime: 6pm Pacific Time (Click here for time at FDSA (Pacific Time).\nFee: $19.95 – Registration required PRIOR to scheduled presentation time. \nRead Barbara’s Bio Here \nThere is a common misconception that dogs only live in the moment. This fallacy has proven to be particularly harmful to dogs that suffer from PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder). \nIf dogs only lived in the moment they would be unable to learn\, and they would not survive as a species. They would be unable to remember any events that occurred in their life and that would make them impossible to train – and we know that dogs are highly trainable! Survival of a species is dependent upon understanding what works and what does not. It means holding onto memories\, and science has shown us that the strongest memories are linked to emotions. \nPositive emotions are linked with happiness\, satiation\, security and well being. Negative emotions are hard wired into the fight or flight primitive part of brain. These emotions when triggered through either intentional or unintentional acts\, can sometimes cause an irreversible conditioning that we call Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. \nThere is a lack of information available to individuals who adopt pets with traumatic pasts but we absolutely have knowledge and techniques for helping dogs that show clear signs of PTSD and trauma from their past. Sharing this information\, discussing behaviors associated with canine PTSD\, and helping handlers identify possible triggers and a game plan for how to best live with\, love and support a dog with PTSD is is the subject of this webinar. \nBarbara will draw on examples from client dogs and from her personal experiences living with her rescue dog Didi\, a GSDX\, who was the victim of one of the worst cases of torture and abuse in Saskatchewan. She will point you and your dog to the light at the end of the tunnel\, and give you a framework on how to build trust and confidence between you and your PTSD dog. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://www.fenzidogsportsacademy.com/index.php/self-study/webinars

SUMMARY:Webinar - 8/20/20 - Jessica Hekman\, PhD\, DVM - The Genetics of Personality - FDSA (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:Date: Thursday\, August 20\, 2020\nTime: 3pm Pacific Time (Click here for time at FDSA (Pacific Time).\nFee: $19.95 – Registration required PRIOR to scheduled presentation time. \nWhat do (and don’t) we know about how genetics affects canine personality? In this webinar\, Jessica Hekman will take a deep dive into her own area of research – how genetics affects personality in dogs. \nHow much of canine personality is due to genetics and how much to environment? How do researchers track down genes related to personality? Have any such genes yet been found? Can we expect a genetic test for dog reactivity any time soon? \nIn this webinar\, Jessica will particularly address examples from human literature about traits that are similar to reactivity in dogs\, and will discuss the difficulties inherent in studying traits like drive and environmental versus handler focus\, as well as possible solutions to those problems. As always\, there will be something for everyone\, so come listen and ask questions\, whether you are just starting to wrap your head around genetics or whether you’re a confirmed science geek! \nWatch the Trailer: \n \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://www.fenzidogsportsacademy.com/index.php/self-study/webinars

SUMMARY:Webinar - 8/20/20 - What are Mesopredators? Taking a Deeper Look at Solving Problems with Our Smallest Urban Predators - NACA/Justice Clearinghouse
DESCRIPTION:Do all opossums have rabies? How can you avoid being sprayed by a skunk? What should you do about raccoons living inside attics or chimneys? This webinar will take a deeper look into the ecology of the most common mesopredators (including foxes\, raccoons\, opossums\, and skunks) in our urban and suburban communities. Learn through video examples about their behaviors\, how they have adapted to live in urban areas\, and how they flourish as our wild neighbors.  This webinar will also discuss the most common conflicts (real or perceived) that these species can create\, and the best methods for preventing and solving them when they do occur. \n  \n  \n\n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n\n  \n\n  \nThe National Animal Care & Control Association (NACA) was formed in 1978 for the express purpose of assisting its members to perform their duties in a professional manner. We believe only carefully selected and properly trained animal control personnel can correct community problems resulting from irresponsible animal ownership. NACA’s purpose is to preserve the Human/Animal Bond by insisting on responsible animal ownership. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n \n  \n  \nThe National Law Enforcement Center on Animal Abuse was established by the National Sheriffs’ Association to provide law enforcement officers information on the realities of animal abuse and to promote their proactive involvement in the enforcement of animal abuse laws in their communities. Through our partners\, the Center will serve as an information clearinghouse and forum for law enforcement on the growing problem of animal abuse and its link to other types of crimes\, including violence against humans. The Center also promotes officer safety in officer-dog encounters through continuing education and training. \n  \n  \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nFounded in 1954\, the Humane Society of the United States and its affiliates around the globe fight the big fights to end suffering for all animals. Together with millions of supporters\, the HSUS takes on puppy mills\, factory farms\, trophy hunts\, animal testing and other cruel industries\, and together with its affiliates\, rescues and provides direct care for over 100\,000 animals every year. The HSUS works on reforming corporate policy\, improving and enforcing laws and elevating public awareness on animal issues. \n  \n  \n\n  \n\n\n\n\n** This webinar has been certified by the National Sheriffs’ Association and may be eligible for Continuing Education Units through your POST. Please consult your local certification processes for additional details. Paid subscribers that attend will be able to download a jointly issued attendance certificate that includes the National Sheriffs’ Association logo.\n\n\n\nPresenters:\n\n\n\nJohn Griffin has 20+ years of field experience ranging from resolving conflict issues with raccoons to protecting great apes. As Senior Director of Urban Wildlife Programs for the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS)\, John oversees field service and policy programs that resolve conflicts with wildlife.   John has provided trainings and consultation for animal care and control\, municipal agencies and state agencies. He has led workshops at national\, state and regional conferences\, and has been a speaker at academic and international conferences. John has also worked extensively with the professional wildlife rehabilitation community as well as to reform the commercial wildlife control industry and serves on advisory boards and working groups with those focuses. John is published on a number of topics and was recently a National Geographic Expedition team member exploring raccoon behavior in urban areas. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://justiceclearinghouse.com/webinar/what-are-mesopredators-taking-a-deeper-look-at-solving-problems-with-our-smallest-urban-predators/

SUMMARY:Webinar - 8/20/20 - Training -v- Management with Suzanne Clothier (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:Training vs. Management \nFor many of our clients\, they unknowingly drift between training and management. Because they are not clear on the difference\, they believe their dog has learned X\, Y or Z when in reality\, they have managed the dog’s behavior\, not taught actual skills. This frustrates the handler and leads to misunderstandings. \nBoth management and training have their place in humane\, effective training. Knowing the difference between the two modes of interacting with the dog is key to helping your clients set clear expectations in any training program. \nThis webinar focuses on: \n\nWhat is management?\nBenefits & drawbacks of management\nDoes management always fail?\nWhat is training?\nTraining vs prevention\nThe Think & Learn zone\nDecision points: when to train\, when to manage\n\nDaily lives with our dogs are an ever changing blend of management and training\, depending on the individual dog\, our lifestyle\, our skill level\, expectations\, and so many other factors. When a handler knows which mode they using at any given time\, they can set realistic expectations for their dog’s behavior. \nThis video will be recorded in case you cannot attend live. 48 hours after the event\, all who are registered will receive a link to the recording. \nCEUS for IAABC and PPAB pending. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://register.gotowebinar.com/register/7234668171766327308?source=IAABC

DESCRIPTION:California: Telemedicine\, law and policy\nHello CASCARarians\, \nJust a quick reminder that tomorrow’s CASCAR meeting is an exciting one that many of us have been waiting for! \nIf you are a California shelter that has ever wanted to explore telemedicine but you’re not sure whether it’s even legally permitted\, you’re not going to want to miss tomorrow’s webinar brought to you by the two CA-licensed animal law attorneys behind California’s new shelter policy and legal services program\, Shelter PALS. \nIn one short hour\, Brandy Kuentzel\, SF SPCA General Counsel\, and Bruce Wagman\,  leader of an exclusive animal law practice in a major US firm\, will guide us through: \n·        Determining whether a veterinarian can legally engage in telemedicine for animals at a CA shelter\, or who are in foster programs under a shelter program. \n·         If so\, discuss under what circumstances veterinary telemedicine may be legally appropriate for shelter animals in CA. \n·         Gain a basic understanding of CA law and walk through real-world examples to facilitate learning. \n·         Learn more about a new program at the San Francisco SPCA\, Shelter Policy and Legal Services (Shelter PALS)\, and how CA shelters can apply for free 1:1 legal support through Shelter PALS to explore possible implementation at your own shelter. \nNote that all are welcome\, but this webinar is specifically tailored to CA shelters (public\, private and hybrid) and will address CA law only. \nWe will be gathering in our usual Zoom room at: https://zoom.us/meeting/register/tJQtdO-srDItyMz7xy-ZsncbcFa6s8kKZg. \nAfter registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting. \nSee you in the morning! \nDr. Kate Hurley and the KSMP Team

SUMMARY:Webinar - 8/18/20 - Can Dogs Have ADHD? A Look at Recent Research on Impulsivity\, Hyperactivity and Inattention in Dogs - Dr. Kristina Spaulding - Pet Professionals Guild (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:CEUs: PPAB 1\, CCPDT (pending)\, KPA (pending)\, IAABC (pending) \n\nAs professionals\, we often attribute hyperactive and impulsive behavior to age and lack of exercise\, training\, and/or enrichment. But is it possible that something else is going on in some dogs? Owners often joke that their dogs have ADHD. Could this be true? What do we actually know about inattention\, hyperactivity\, and impulsivity in dogs? How can you use this information to more effectively address these behaviors in dogs? \nThis webinar will look at this issue by focusing on a recent research paper on this topic\, but we will also discuss the findings of other\, similar studies. \nLearning Objectives: \n\nExplain what ADHD-like behaviors are and why that term is used\nDefine impulsivity and describe how it’s measured\nSummarize the research on ADHD-like behavior in dogs\nExplain how we can use this research when working with dogs\n\nAbout The Presenter \n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\nDr. Kristina Spaulding\n \n\nDr. Spaulding has a PhD in biopsychology – the study of the biological basis of behavior – and is a Certified Applied Animal Behaviorist through the Animal Behavior Society. SUMMARY:Weekly Call - Monday Mornings - Connect With Other Animal Shelter Professionals - Maddie's Fund
DESCRIPTION:Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic\, animal shelter workers\, volunteers and animal welfare leaders from across the country have been meeting every Monday morning at 7am PT/10am ET to discuss protocols\, ideas\, obstacles they’re facing and more.   \nLed by Kristen Hassen-Auerbach\, Director of Pima Animal Care in Tucson\, AZ\, these calls have provided an opportunity for people to connect that otherwise may not have even met.    \n“The purpose of these calls is simple – maintain connection among shelter professionals\, provide support and comradery\, and share science-based news and information along with emerging best practices in animal welfare\,” Hassen-Auerbach says. “These calls are always lively and interesting and we’re not afraid to debate and share different perspectives from the attendees. You can take center stage and share your thoughts and ideas in front of several hundred of your colleagues or quietly drink your morning coffee and listen in.”  \nFor many\, these calls have been an invaluable resource. “When the subject of DEI (Diversity\, Equity and Inclusion) came to the front of all of our minds\, the calls adapted and we had a space to again learn from one another\,” said Emily Klehm from South Suburban Humane Society in Chicago Heights\, IL. “The calls have been my go-to source for grant information\, statistics and trends. I’ve also been able to identify and connect to colleagues working on the same issues in similar communities.”  \nDr. Ellen Jefferson\, Executive Director at Austin Pets Alive! adds\, “We hear from people in the industry who have important information related to COVID\, new programming and research.  This is information you can’t possibly get in your day to day work at your local shelter.”  \nIf you’re a shelter professional\, dedicated volunteer or run a rescue organization\, we want you to join us! Bookmark this link and we will see you on Monday! \nNote: The calls are recorded so if you can’t make it\, you can listen in later. If you haven’t already\, join the Facebook group to access the link to recorded calls and to connect with others on there.
