SUMMARY:Online Course - 6/9/20 - Common Soft Tissue Surgery Procedures - IVS
DESCRIPTION:Seminar Topics:\n\nLecture 1:   Intestinal anastomosis – tips to make it easier\nWhen performing an intestinal resection and anastomosis by yourself (i.e.\, no assistant to help!) I have several tips that may make the procedure easier for you. I will suggest a number of alternative techniques that you can consider incorporating that will likely make this common procedure easier and more predictably successful. Video of clinical cases will be used to illustrate these techniques. \n  \nLecture 2:   Surgical management of canine cystic and urethral calculi\nA ‘never fail’ technique for retropulsion of calculi lodged in the urethra of male dogs will be presented. What is your worst cystic calculi nightmare……leaving a stone behind after your cystotomy! This lecture will describe a unique protocol that will eliminate the possibility of leaving a stone behind. Video of clinical cases will be used to illustrate this protocol. \n  \nLecture 3:   Anal sacculectomy: a novel approach\nAnal sacculectomy is frequently performed in veterinary practice. It can be tricky to get all of the anal sac epithelium and preserve the external anal sphincter muscle and caudal rectal nerve. I will suggest a ‘novel’ technique that allows the surgeon full control of the perianal anatomy and thus preservation of all vital structures during complete anal sac resection. Video showing this technique in a clinical case will illustrate its potential usefulness in your practice. \n  \nSurgical management of brachycephalic syndrome\nThis session will discuss the management of upper airway obstruction in brachycephalic breeds. Emphasis will be placed on nasoplasty and soft palate resection. A novel technique for nasal planum resection will be discussed.  There is compelling evidence suggesting that not all everted laryngeal saccules need to be resected! Videotape will be used to illustrate surgical techniques. \n  \nLecture 4:   Surgical repair of diaphragmatic hernia\nThis session will discuss the three most common types of diaphragmatic hernia; acute traumatic\, chronic traumatic\, and congenital peritoneopericardial and how they can be repaired. Video of clinical cases will be used to illustrate techniques used to surgically repair each type of hernia. Management of chronic atelectatic lung lobes and the incidence of re-expansion pulmonary edema will be discussed. \n  \nLecture 5:   Feline subtotal colectomy\nSubtotal colectomy for the treatment of megacolon in cats is no longer considered a salvage procedure. This session is designed to describe\, in detail\, the authors’ preferred technique for subtotal colectomy. Video of a clinical case will be used to illustrate the authors’ tricks on how to make the technique easier to perform and more predictably successful. \n  \nFeline perineal urethrostomy – a novel approach\nFeline perineal urethrostomy has classically been approached with the patient placed in a perineal position. Although this positioning is awkward for the surgeon it has become the standard approach. This lecture will suggest taking another look at patient positioning. Placing the cat in dorsal recumbancy allows for a much more ‘ergonomic’ approach for the surgeon and enhances visualization of the regional anatomy. In addition\, this positioning allows access to the patients’ urinary bladder. Video of this novel approach will be used to illustrate the advantages of dorsal recumbancy positioning. \n\n\n\n\n\nSeminar Schedule:\nLecture 1: \n10:00am  Pacific\n1:00pm  Eastern \nLecture 2: \n11:00am  Pacific\n2:00pm  Eastern \nLecture 3: \nnoon  Pacific\n3:00pm  Eastern \nLecture 4: \n1:00pm  Pacific\n4:00pm  Eastern \nLecture 5: \n2:00pm  Pacific\n5:00pm  Eastern \nThere will be short breaks at the end of each lecture.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHOWARD SEIM III D.V.M.\nDiplomate\, American College of Veterinary Surgeons\nProfessor of Surgery\nColorado State University \n\n\n\n\n\nCE Hours\n\nThis program has been submitted for 5 hours of continuing education credit in jurisdictions\, which recognize AAVSB’s RACE approval; however\, participants should be aware that some boards have limitations on the number of hours accepted in certain categories and /or restrictions on certain methods of delivery of continuing education. Call IVS at 800-487-5650 for further information. \n\nRegister Now

DESCRIPTION:Introducing Highly Reactive and Aggressive Dogs – A Case Study – Monday\, June 15\, 2020 | Noon EST\, 9 AM Pacific\nWith KPA’s EVP & Chief Training Officer\, Ken Ramirez\nKen will share the case study of a project he conducted from 2013 through 2015 in Chicago. He will explore the challenges and protocols he followed in working with four dogs rescued from Chicago area shelters. Three of the dogs were severely reactive\, one was a trained fighting dog\, and all had a bite history. The protocol followed was an introduction protocol\, not an aggression treatment protocol. Although the project resulted in a significant reduction in aggression\, the protocol was designed to teach animals how to live together and how to cohabitate. Ken will share the details of the protocol and share the steps he used to teach the dogs to work cooperatively and live together. \nPresenter\n\n\nKen Ramirez \n\n\nKen Ramirez is the Executive Vice President and Chief Training Officer at Karen Pryor Clicker Training (KPCT). As a trainer and consultant with nearly 40 years of experience\, Ken also served as the Executive Vice President at Chicago’s world-famous Shedd Aquarium.\n\nClick Here to Register

SUMMARY:Webinar - 6/16/20 - Improving Public Safety by Stopping Animal Cruelty - The LINK - NACA - Justice Clearinghouse
DESCRIPTION:“If somebody is harming an animal\, there’s a good chance they also are hurting a human\,” notes John Thompson of the National Sheriffs’ Association. With four types of cruelty to animals now included in the FBI’s NIBRS process\, animal abuse is recognized as a serious crime in its own right and a predictor of family\, youth\, community\, and organized violence. This seminar will discuss how specialized animal crimes units\, law enforcement and prosecutors’ offices and veterinary forensics teams are responding to animal abuse to also prevent domestic\, elder\, and child abuse. \n\n \nThe National Animal Care & Control Association (NACA) was formed in 1978 for the express purpose of assisting its members to perform their duties in a professional manner. We believe only carefully selected and properly trained animal control personnel can correct community problems resulting from irresponsible animal ownership. NACA’s purpose is to preserve the Human/Animal Bond by insisting on responsible animal ownership. \n \nThe National Law Enforcement Center on Animal Abuse was established by the National Sheriffs’ Association to provide law enforcement officers information on the realities of animal abuse and to promote their proactive involvement in the enforcement of animal abuse laws in their communities. Through our partners\, the Center will serve as an information clearinghouse and forum for law enforcement on the growing problem of animal abuse and its link to other types of crimes\, including violence against humans. The Center also promotes officer safety in officer-dog encounters through continuing education and training. \n\n\n\n** This webinar has been certified by the National Sheriffs’ Association and may be eligible for Continuing Education Units through your POST. Please consult your local certification processes for additional details. Paid subscribers that attend will be able to download a jointly issued attendance certificate that includes the National Sheriffs’ Association logo.\n\n\n\nPresenters:\n\n\n\nInternationally acclaimed lecturer\, author and educator Phil Arkow is coordinator of the National LINK Coalition – the National Resource Center on The LINK between Animal Abuse and Human Violence – and edits the monthly LINK-Letter. He chairs the Latham Foundation’s Animal Abuse and Family Violence Prevention Project. He teaches at the University of Florida\, Harcum College and Camden County College. He has presented over 250 times in 17 countries\, 38 states and 9 Canadian provinces\, and has authored over 80 key reference works on human-animal interactions and violence prevention. \nHe co-founded the National Link Coalition\, the National Animal Control Association\, and the Colorado and New Jersey humane federations. He has served with the AVMA\, the ASPCA\, American Humane\, the Delta Society\, the Animals & Society Institute\, the National Sheriffs Association\, the National Coalition on Violence Against Animals\, the National District Attorneys Association\, the Academy on Violence & Abuse\, and the American Association of Human-Animal Bond Veterinarians. He received a Lifetime Achievement Award from New Jersey Child Assault Prevention. \nWebsite:  https://justiceclearinghouse.com/webinar/improving-public-safety-by-stopping-animal-cruelty-the-link/

SUMMARY:Webinar - 6/17/20 - The Nose Knows: Or Does It? How Drugs Affect Scenting Ability in Dogs - ASPCAPro
DESCRIPTION:Nosework is an amazing sport/activity for shelter dogs – pet owners are becoming involved in this training in record numbers.  It uses positive reinforcement\, helps dogs to develop confidence and optimism and doesn’t require dogs to interact with each other to be successful. \nEvery day more dogs are being used by government agencies to find drugs\, explosives\, human remains\, and other animal species. At the same time\, pet owners have discovered the sport of canine nose work and are enjoying the benefits of this engaging and stimulating activity. \nThere is much we do not know about the canine olfaction system and what factors may influence a dog’s ability to perform scent work appropriately. \nThis webinar will examine the canine olfaction system and examine various drugs that may\, or may not\, affect scenting ability. \n\nSuited For\n\nVeterinarians and veterinary technicians \n\n\n\nCredits\n\nThe live webinar and post-webinar online course are RACE-approved and good for one hour of free CE for veterinarians and veterinary technicians. Courses meet the requirements of RACE hours of continuing education credit for veterinarians and veterinary technicians in jurisdictions which recognize AAVSB’s RACE approval. \n\nREGISTER:  https://www.aspcapro.org/training/webinar/nose-knows-or-does-it-how-drugs-affect-scenting-ability-dogs
