DESCRIPTION:Many dog guardians\, dog behaviour experts\, and dog researchers have a keen interest in village dogs (and other dogs who live at large). Some of the interest is simple: a curiosity about how these dogs live. However\, some people suggest that village dogs live a life which is much improved\, welfare-wise\, over the life of a pet dog. In this webinar\, dog trainer and anthropologist Kristi Benson will provide an introduction to village dogs (including definitions and geography). She will also review welfare-compromised and positive aspects of village dogs lives before looking at some of the lessons we can learn for pet dogs: enrichment\, foraging\, socializing\, environmental choices\, and so on. She will also comment on some of the potential pitfalls and flaws in the discussions about village dogs. \nLearning Objectives: \n\nEvaluate sources of expertise on village dogs and dog welfare\nUnderstand the difference between seeking good consequences vs. getting relief\, and why those separate motivations matter to this\ntopic\nIdentify the naturalistic fallacy in the context of discussing village dogs\nDevelop new ways to improve pet dog welfare based on lessons from village dogs\n\nAbout the Presenter \nKristi Benson is an honours graduate of\, and now on staff at\, the Academy for Dog Trainers. At the Academy\, she is a student mentor and coach\, and is in charge of the weekly webinars. Kristi is also in charge of special projects\, including the Husbandry Project\, which is a large co-operative veterinary care research study working with hundreds of dog owners\, testing the efficiency and usefulness of a series of training plans. DESCRIPTION:Those of us who share our lives with cats are very aware that\, behaviorally speaking\, they have diverged very little from their wild ancestors. Although studies are clear that our feline companions live much safer and longer lives when kept indoors\, these “house panthers” need an environment that provides them with the opportunity to express the unique\, species specific behaviors they share with their larger counterparts. A home lacking these outlets results in a condition of chronic stress which can cause unwanted behaviors from\, and impact the physical health of\, your cat. \nIn this webinar\, Dr. Jenny Biehunko will cover: \n—How a cat’s environment affects behavioral issues such as house soiling\, destructive behavior\, and social conflict as well as medical problems such as skin\, endocrine\, and urinary disorders.\n—Designing and optimizing an enriched environment for indoor cats and choosing a layout that works for each individual\n—Implementing an enrichment plan and incorporating enrichment into treatment plans for both medical and behavioral issues. \nAnd much more! \nDr. Jenny Beard Biehunko is a 1998 graduate of the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine. Soon after beginning small animal practice\, Jenny developed a special interest in Behavioral Medicine\, and she began seeing behavior cases in a private practice setting. In 2017\, she began a Residency with the American College of Veterinary Behaviorists under the mentorship of Dr. Lynne Seibert. Jenny teaches courses in Ethology and Behavior at both the Auburn and Tuskegee Colleges of Veterinary Medicine. In addition to practicing small animal medicine\, she owns a behavior exclusive practice in Birmingham\, Alabama\, where she focuses primarily on canine\, feline\, equine\, and avian cases.
