SUMMARY:Webinar - 1/18/23 - Breaking Down "Us vs. Them" Thinking to Build Stronger Connections - The AAWA
DESCRIPTION:Whether we realize it or not\, the polarization and uncertainty happening in society impacts every aspect of our lives\, including the workplace. When we feel that a core part of our values or our identity is threatened\, our instinct is often to contract\, to seek what feels comfortable\, predictable\, and safe. Yet it is precisely in these times when we need to expand\, to venture beyond the assumed safety of our comfort zones and echo chambers. We will explore 3 practices for expansion and how to broaden and diversify our social networks to make better decisions for our organizations. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://learning.theaawa.org/p/1-18-23

SUMMARY:Online Course - 1/18/23 - Surrender Prevention Certification Workshop - Community Cats Podcast (small fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:As a Surrender Prevention Specialist\, you may be the difference between a cat losing her home and staying in her home. Join this session to learn what surrender prevention is and why it works. Instructed by Dr. Rachel Geller\, she will share real examples\, with proven results\, setting the potential surrenderer and cat on the road to a happy relationship together and keeping the cat in her home. We’ll cover how to empathize with cat owners\, working around their limitations (financial\, time\, patience) and focus on the 3 most common reasons for surrender: litter box problems\, scratching (and not on the scratching post!)\, and inter-cat aggression. Take advantage of the interactive format\, extensive handouts\, and video footage of actual techniques. Attendees will receive a certificate after taking a short quiz. The workshop is offered three times in 2023 and the cost to register is just $10. \nThe session duration is 1.5 hours\, followed by an optional 15-minute Q&A session. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://www.communitycatspodcast.com/events/surrender-prevention-certification-workshop-january-2023/

SUMMARY:Webinar - 1/19/23 - Dr. Christine Calder: Low Stress Handling: What is New? - PPG (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:The shelter can be a scary place for dogs and cats but it doesn’t have to be. The emotional-well being of these animals is important and there are ways we can improve the welfare of these animals by setting up low stress environments\, monitoring emotional states\, and practicing Low Stress Handling Techniques when handling and restraining. \nAbout the presenter\nA graduate of Mississippi State University but native of New Jersey\, Dr. Christine Calder has lived and practiced veterinary medicine in both New Jersey and Maine for many years. In addition to general practice\, Dr. Calder has worked at the San Francisco SPCA\, Auburn University’s College of Veterinary Medicine and Louisiana State University’s School of Veterinary Medicine. Most recently\, she was an assistant clinical professor in community veterinary services and veterinary behavior at Mississippi State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine. \nAs a general practitioner\, Dr. Calder always had an interest in animal behavior especially clinical veterinary behavior and\, in 2016\, she finished a residency with the American College of Veterinary Behaviorists. In 2017\, she became a diplomate with the American College of Veterinary Behaviorists (DACVB). Her special interest is in shelter behavior\, feline behavior\, and shy/fearful dogs. SUMMARY:Webinar - 1/19/23 - Bodies of Evidence: Issues Arising from Search and Seizure of Animal Bodies in Cruelty Investigations - NACA/Justice Clearinghouse
DESCRIPTION:A law enforcement officer seizes a dying horse without a warrant. An abused animal is brought to a veterinarian for euthanasia and cremation\, but instead is necropsied. A law enforcement officer shields onlooking children from a cat’s body by placing it in a nearby dumpster. A veterinarian does a warrantless blood draw to diagnose a malnourished dog\, and the blood results are used in a criminal prosecution. In animal cruelty cases\, the animal’s body—whether dead or alive—is a crime scene. Many law enforcement professionals have not been trained to properly preserve and search that crime scene\, and yet they are forced to do so\, without compromising the evidence\, the defendant’s constitutional rights\, or the animal’s health or life. These cases present novel search and seizure issues. Join the Animal Legal Defense Fund’s attorneys David Rosengard\, Emily Lewis\, and Kathleen Wood to discuss how these and other issues can be resolved for a successful prosecution\, and how they can be addressed or avoided in future cases. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://www.justiceclearinghouse.com/webinar/bodies-of-evidence-issues-arising-from-search-and-seizure-of-animal-bodies-in-cruelty-investigations/

SUMMARY:Webinar - 1/19/23 - Suzanne Clothier - Quick – Hit PAUSE! Using Controlled Set-ups for Reactive Dogs - FDSA (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:Handlers of reactive dogs struggle to find ways to help their dogs feel less worried\, overwhelmed or pushed past their thresholds. But progress can be slow\, particularly if the dog continues to be triggered despite the handler’s best efforts. \nAs a behavior consultant\, I work with many handlers who are discouraged or frustrated. In many cases\, there are holes in the training plan. Inevitably\, the training falls apart\, the dog is triggered\, the handler is embarrassed or upset. Why does this happen so often? \nThis webinar dives into what you need to know to help reactive dogs through carefully controlled set-ups. \nTraining in the wild?\nPause button or uncontrolled variables?\nUnderstanding your dog’s triggers (visual\, auditory\, kinesthetic\, olfactory\, social\, chase)\nThe holy trinity of dog training: Distance\, intensity & duration\nUsing Line of View and Field of View in the real world \nIf you’ve ever wished for a PAUSE button on life to help your dog\, this webinar is for you. The practical information provided will help anyone create successful training moments. Find out why so many clients and their dogs have benefited from this sensible approach to thin slicing for success. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://www.fenzidogsportsacademy.com/index.php/self-study/webinars
