SUMMARY:Webinar - 7/24/24 - Who let the dogs out? Unleashing solutions: Finding solutions to the problem of Fiji's free-roaming dog population - Getting 2 Zero
DESCRIPTION:Overpopulation of dogs is an issue in Fiji\, similar to many other South Pacific and industralized nations worldwide. This presentation explores results from a door-to-door survey in the Tavakubu ward of Lautoka\, highlighting the impacts of human behavior in maintaining free-roaming dog populations\, including ownership apathy\, indiscriminate feeding\, and low compliance with responsible pet ownership practices. Our findings underscore the importance of understanding the negative impacts of “toxic charity” and emphasize the need to shift from predominantly shelter-based strategies and free-of-charge services to promoting responsible dog ownership and caregiver behaviors. Outputs of this study underscore the importance of ongoing evaluation of knowledge\, attitudes\, and practice (KAP) studies to understand how animal welfare initiatives can support community behavior changes that foster sustainable\, long-term dog population management strategies. \nThis event will be recorded and the recording will be available the day after the event. \nSpeakers: \nCasey Quimby – Co-Founder and Managing Trustee\, Animals Fiji \nCasey is an Animerican-Fijian with nearly 15 years of experience operating a shelter and multiple veterinary clinics throughout Fiji. Casey has been a pivotal figure in the region’s animal welfare efforts. She earned her Master’s Certificate in Shelter Medicine from the University of Florida in 2018 and has been at the forefront of data collection and population management in Fiji over the past four years. Her dedication to developing evidence-based\, research-informed strategies has significantly contributed to sustainable and humane solutions for companion animal population management in local communities. \nDr Jessica Hoopes – Animals Fiji Volunteer \nJessica is a Canadian Veterinarian with over 10 years’ experience working in veterinary and shelter medicine and animal management in Canada\, Fiji\, Papua New Guinea\, Costa Rica\, and Australia. Her experiences working in the Pacific Islands have underscored the importance of developing evidence-based\, research informed strategies for addressing free roaming cat and dog populations\, that are tailored to the needs of the local community. While currently working as the One Health Research Coordinator for Animal Management in Rural and Remote Indigenous Communities (AMRRIC)\, she spent the past 5 years remotely supporting rescue groups in Fiji in developing a framework for baseline data collection with the hopes of informing sustainable and humane solutions for companion animal population management. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://www.g2z.org.au/g2z-webinars-and-online-events.html

SUMMARY:Online Event - 7/25/24 - Maddie's Monthly Behavior Connection: Managing Separation Anxiety in Shelter Dogs - Maddie's Fund
DESCRIPTION:Join us on July 25 for Managing Separation Anxiety in Shelter Dogs with Dr. Valerie Tynes of the SPCA of Texas (12n Pacific / 3pm Eastern for one hour) \nSeparation-related problems result in extreme mental suffering in affected dogs and negatively impact the quality of life of their owners as well. With time\, these types of problems can severely damage and eventually destroy even the strongest of human animal bonds. Helping pet owners to understand that affected dogs are not “acting out” and that they don’t just need “more structure” or “more exercise” is imperative if we are going to solve these problems. This presentation will review the most common clinical signs of separation anxiety\, some of the “red flags” in a dog’s history that suggest it may have a separation-related problem and how to accurately identify the problem. Some practical approaches to treatment will also be presented. Can’t attend live? Register anyway and you will get a link to the recording within a day or two after each meeting. \nJoin us on the fourth Thursday of every month as we talk about dog and cat behavior – supporting pets in our community and animal shelters. Each month\, we hear from speakers about topics of interest to our group\, such as behavior medications\, modifying animal behavior\, assessing and improving animal welfare\, and how organizations successfully provide behavior support to dogs and cats. \nWho should join: Animal welfare staff and volunteers who are interested in dog and cat behavior\, and everyone who works to keep pets out of shelters and in homes. \nYou only need to register once for all meetings: https://maddies.fund/MonthlyBehaviorRegistration \nCan’t attend live? Register anyway and you will get a link to the recording within a day or two after each meeting. \nAll recordings and resources shared during the webcast will also be available in the Maddie’s Monthly Behavior Connection group on Maddie’s Pet Forum – https://maddies.fund/monthlybehaviorconnectionMPF \nMaddie’s Fund does not share registration information. \nThe opinions expressed by webinar presenters are their own and do not necessarily represent those of Maddie’s Fund. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://maddies.fund/MonthlyBehaviorRegistration

SUMMARY:Webinar - 7/25/24 - Leash Off! Game On! with Julie Flanery - FDSA (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:Do you worry each time you take the leash off that your dog will become distracted\, or even take off on their own? Has taking off the leash become a cue to disconnect? Imagine if instead when you remove your dog’s leash they sprung to life! That they became immediately engaged\, focused\, and excited to play the game with you. \nIn this webinar\, we will explore games and activities that help build off-leash reliability and connection with your 4-legged friend and to build a strong skill set that you can carry into any situation. SUMMARY:Webinar - 7/25/24 - "Behavioral Euthanasia: Taking the Stigma Out of a Difficult Decision" with Dr. Shana Gilbert-Gregory - ACVB (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:Behavioral euthanasia (BE) can be a profoundly difficult decision for owners to make and often comes with significant stigma and judgement from friends\, family\, online communities and sometimes members of the veterinary field. This presentation will discuss behavioral considerations for euthanasia\, tools to discuss behavioral euthanasia with clients and staff\, humane protocols for euthanizing patients with fear\, anxiety and aggression disorders\, considerations for veterinary personnel in navigating the emotions associated with behavioral euthanasia and resources for support in navigating moving forward after behavioral euthanasia. \nDr. Shana Gilbert-Gregory grew up in New York City and at a very young age\, she developed a passion for animals and their well-being. Her experiences with sheltering and animal rescue throughout her life helped her realize that she was especially interested in addressing behavioral medicine concerns and helping improve the human-animal bond. This passion led her to graduate from the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine followed by completing her behavioral medicine residency at The Ohio State University to become a Behavioral Medicine Clinician. \nDr. Gilbert-Gregory has a special interest in behavioral medicine but also enjoys shelter medicine\, internal medicine\, neurology\, emergency\, critical care and orthopedics. At home\, she has 4 pets: Lou-Wee\, a 10 year old Golden Retriever\, Eldy\, a 7 year-old Boston Terrier\, Roland\, a two-year-old Golden Retriever and Brick\, and ancient domestic shorthair (who rules the roost.) \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://register.gotowebinar.com/register/7203036353487864919
