    In a second nurse/technician-focused IVS seminar, Dr. Grubb will cover anesthesia and analgesia with a focus on exactly what the patient needs for drugs, support, monitoring and analgesia. Although directed to technicians/nurses, the seminar will also apply to anyone wanting an anesthesia/analgesia review, including veterinarians and veterinary students. There will be time for Q & A so you can learn almost anything you want to!

    Lecture 1: The beat goes on: Monitoring and support of the cardiovascular system

    Take home: Which monitors and why, the importance of blood pressure (BP) and heart rate (HR), how to support BP, when to intervene with HR, which IV fluids/when/how much.

    Lecture 2: Every breath you take: Monitoring and support of the respiratory system

    Take home: Which monitors and why, the importance of end-tidal carbon dioxide (ETCO2), oxygen saturation (SpO2), when and how to breathe for the patient, how to do a recruitment maneuver, the impact of the anesthesia machine on the respiratory system and the importance of a properly functioning anesthetic machine.

    Lecture 3: All systems go: Monitoring and support for all those other systems (renal, hepatic, thermoregulatory)

    Although the focus is usually on the cardiovascular and respiratory systems since changes in these systems can rapidly lead to death, there are a lot of other physiologic systems! What do we do to monitor and support those systems in the anesthetized patient.

    Lecture 4: Pain, pain go away: Constant Rate Infusions:

    Calculate, create, initiate

    CRIs make you CRY? Let’s make them FUN! Or at least easy😉. Which drugs, which math, when to start, when to stop….. You’ve got this! And your patients will be sooo happy.

    Lecture 5: My favorite anesthetic/analgesic protocol for….

    You name it, I’ll tell you my favorite protocol for it. I will start with diabetics, cesarean sections, brachycephalic patients and a few others. Then we will start going through your cases – so audience participation is a must!

    Dr. Grubb will present RACE approved 5 CE hours.

    Introducing Highly Reactive and Aggressive Dogs – A Case Study – Monday, June 15, 2020 | Noon EST, 9 AM Pacific

    Ken will share the case study of a project he conducted from 2013 through 2015 in Chicago. He will explore the challenges and protocols he followed in working with four dogs rescued from Chicago area shelters. Three of the dogs were severely reactive, one was a trained fighting dog, and all had a bite history. The protocol followed was an introduction protocol, not an aggression treatment protocol. Although the project resulted in a significant reduction in aggression, the protocol was designed to teach animals how to live together and how to cohabitate. Ken will share the details of the protocol and share the steps he used to teach the dogs to work cooperatively and live together.

    This Thursday 6/11 2-3pm CST, Amanda Arrington and Ashley Anderson-Mutch from Pets for Life will be joining us for a discussion about building foundational values as animal welfare organizations that positively support our communities and dismantle structural inequities and punishment based responses that many pet owners experience. We’ll also be looking at the parallels between policing and animal welfare organizations and how recognizing those connections can help us find new pathways to support people and their pets. Amanda is the director of Pets for Life and Ashley is the policy and enforcement reform manager for Pets for Life and a former humane law enforcement officer in PA.

    If you have the time we’d encourage you to listen to this podcast on the history of American policing. If you don’t have the time to listen before rounds don’t worry one bit, there will still be plenty of value to these discussions without having heard this podcast.

    COVID-19 Rounds info:

    We will be more regularly offering National Shelter Medicine Rounds short term to discuss COVID-19 impacts on shelter medicine on Tuesdays from 3-4pm CT (1pmPT/2pmMT/4pmET)  and Thursdays from 2-3pm CT (12pmPT/1pmMT/3pmET). You are welcome to email questions or topics you hope to be discussed during rounds in advance to nationalsheltermedicinerounds@vetmed.wisc.edu and you are always encouraged to come prepared to unmute to ask questions and participate in discussion at any point. I will be sending email reminders of upcoming rounds in advance. Note: Rounds is typically held the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of the month and will return to that format once the need for regular COVID-19 discussion passes. Recordings will not be available during COVID-19 discussions but can be accessed from previous regular rounds and will again be available once we return to the usual format.

     

    This group is made up of shelter veterinarians, shelter vet trainees, and upper level shelter leadership.
